# A slate gray custom bench cushion on a curved teak garden bench, felt and weathered

*Callum answers three buyer questions first, then reads a rose-wall bench for how its outdoor cloth feels, wears and cleans.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion for a curved-back garden bench should be cut to the inside of the frame, measured between the arms at seat level at both the front and the back. Slate gray outdoor acrylic suits it: a dry, woven hand for damp afternoons, a zippered cover that comes off for washing, and a color that makes roses look pinker.

## Three questions, answered before the tea goes cold

**A common question:** I just unpacked my cushion and it measures shorter than I ordered. Did you cut it wrong?

**The workshop's answer:** Probably not. Cushions ship vacuum-packed, so the foam measures short at first and needs up to about a week to regain its full shape. Take it out of the packaging promptly, wait, then measure again. One cushion measured 103 in (262 cm) straight out of the pack against the 105.25 in (267 cm) ordered.

**A common question:** Can the piping be a different kind of fabric from the cushion, like a soft fabric body with linen trim?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. You can mix fabric types and colors, for example an ice-blue soft-fabric body (#126) with tan linen piping (L-20). Write both codes separately in the order note, such as 'Cushion: Soft Fabric #126 / Piping: L-20'.

**A common question:** Should the measurements I send include the piping?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Send the exact bench measurements, for example 48 x 21 in (122 x 53 cm). The cushion is always cut to your bench size, and the piping sits on the seams, so it doesn't change the size.

## The reading: a slate seat inside a scrolled teak frame

Now the bench. A curved-back teak garden bench with scrolled arms stands on mossy flagstones against a red brick wall gone over to pink climbing roses. Cloudy afternoon, the kind of flat light that lets you see a fabric honestly.

The cushion is slate gray, woven, box-edged, with self piping. It sits inside the arms with square corners, cut to the frame rather than laid across it. On a shaped bench that is the whole trick, friend: measure between the arms at seat level, front and back, because the two numbers often differ. More in [how to measure a bench](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-bench-for-cushion/).

Slate earns its place on color, too. Next to gray, the blush pillow and the roses look pinker. The chunky cream knitted throw sits where the back curves, softening the spot where hard teak meets your shoulders.

The rest tells a story. An enamel mug of tea on the arm tray, kept off the cushion. Garden books and pruning shears beside it. Gloves dropped on the flagstones among fallen petals, lavender in terracotta, clipped boxwood balls behind. Somebody stopped mid-job to sit down. That's what a [garden bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) is for.

## Pinned by Callum: five signs of a working bench

Five pins, from the slate seat tucked between the arms to the gloves left on the flagstones.

1. **slate seat cushion**: Cut to fit inside the arms, the cushion tucks neatly into a shaped frame.
2. **blush pillow**: Against slate gray, the blush pillow and roses look pinker.
3. **chunky knit throw**: A heavy knit adds softness where the bench back curves.
4. **enamel mug on tray**: An arm tray keeps the mug off the cushion.
5. **gardening gloves**: Gloves and petals on the stone suggest a pause mid-task.

## How outdoor acrylic feels, wears and cleans

Run a hand over [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) and it feels drier and crisper than indoor upholstery, closer to good canvas than to velvet. That dry hand is what you want on a seat that sees dew at breakfast and a shower by lunch.

Wear first. A tight weave in a mid-tone like slate forgives a lot. A muddy glove or a dusting of pollen lands on it without shouting.

Cleaning second. The cover zips off, so the cloth can be washed while the foam stays out of it. Rain doesn't negotiate, so bring the cushion in or stand it on edge after a storm to drain. See [water-repellent versus waterproof](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/) and [outdoor cushion care](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-care-winter-storage/) for the rest of the season.

What does your bench put up with between April and October?

## Millimeters, two angles and a drawing that agreed with itself

Not every good measurement arrives in inches. A buyer abroad sent the workshop a symmetric trapezoid for a bay seat in millimeters, and it was one of the cleanest drawings we've seen.

Front 72 3/4 in (1847 mm). Back 47 in (1195 mm). Depth 22 1/4 in (565 mm). Angles of 60 degrees at the front corners and 120 at the back, with each angled end about 25 5/8 in (652 mm). The cushion was 3 in (7.6 cm) thick, self-piped in its own fabric, with a [non-slip base](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#non-slip-base).

Because every number agreed with every other, nobody had to redraw a thing. The workshop simply told the buyer which size ranges to pick on the listing and quoted it.

Same rule on a curved garden bench: front, back and depth, plus the angles or the diagonals, fully define the shape. Weather tests a cushion; geometry tests the person holding the tape. The [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) is a good place to check your numbers.

> **Tailor's margin:** Slate gray is the working color for an outdoor bench cushion: it forgives a muddy glove and makes pink roses look pinker.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How does outdoor acrylic feel compared with indoor upholstery fabric?

Drier and crisper, closer to canvas than to velvet or chenille. It is built for sun and damp rather than softness, so bring the softness in with a knitted throw or a pillow, as on this garden bench.

### What color hides wear best on an outdoor bench cushion?

Mid-tones such as slate gray. Very pale colors show dirt quickly, and very dark ones tend to show dust. Slate also flatters flowers: next to gray, pinks and greens read brighter.

### Can I wash the cover of an outdoor bench pad?

Yes. Outdoor covers are fully zippered and removable, so the cover can be washed while the foam stays out. Let it dry completely before zipping it back over the foam.

### Does a garden bench with arms need cushion ties?

Often not, if the cushion is cut snugly between the arms. On an open bench without arms, ties at the back corners or a non-slip base keep the cushion from sliding.
