# A slate blue velvet chair cushion with ties, read from ten feet and from ten inches

*Maggie reads a bedside chair pad the way she checks a window seat: first from the doorway, then with her nose six inches from the welt.*

> **The quick answer:** From across a room, a chair cushion with ties is read by its piping, not its fabric. On this slate blue velvet pad, the mustard welt draws the box edge from ten feet away, while the velvet's sheen and the navy tie bows only show up close. Choose piping for the distant view and fabric for the hand.

## The ten-foot view from the bedroom door

Stand in the bedroom doorway and squint. The first thing you see on this white chair is not velvet at all. It is a thin mustard line.

That line is [contrast piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#contrast-piping), and from ten feet it does all the talking. It draws the box edge of a slate blue [chair cushion with ties](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/) as one clean shape against a white seat and pale walls. Without it, a blue-gray pad on a white chair reads as a shadow. With it, the chair looks dressed.

The color was not picked out of thin air. Mustard is the smallest warm note in the room: a few flowers in the floral duvet, the terracotta pots on the sill. Borrowing the welt from the smallest accent is how a pad looks planned rather than bought. I learned that the hard way, dear, on a run of window seats where I matched the piping to the curtains and the whole bay went flat.

The blue-gray body stays calm beside the white chair, and the box edge gives the welt a crisp corner to turn.

## Pinned by Maggie: what carries across the room, and what doesn't

Five pins, from the navy tie bow on the chair to the terracotta pots on the windowsill.

1. **Navy tie bow**: Tie-on fit keeps the cushion in place on a chair that also holds books and clothes.
2. **Mustard piping**: The welt picks up the warm flowers in the bedding and the terracotta pots.
3. **Books on the bed**: A book stack suggests the chair is a bedside reading perch.
4. **Rattan pendant**: Woven rattan adds texture overhead without adding color.
5. **Windowsill plants**: Terracotta and trailing green echo the mustard and soften the blue.

## The ten-inch view: sheen, bows and a stack of books

Now walk over and bend down. Up close, the slate blue shifts. [Velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) catches the light from the sheer white curtains, so the top can read a shade paler than the box side. That sheen never reaches the doorway. It is a reward for whoever sits.

The navy tie bows work the same way. From across the room they disappear into the chair; up close they explain the whole setup. A bedside chair collects books and tomorrow's clothes, and a pad that slides every time you drop a sweater on it is a nuisance. [Ties](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#ties) keep it put.

The props each have a job:
- The hardback books on the bed make the chair a reading perch, not a clothes horse.
- The oatmeal knit throw with fringe adds texture without adding a color.
- The rattan pendant does the same job overhead.
- Terracotta pots and trailing plants on the sill repeat the mustard, so the welt has company.
- The fringed flatweave rug keeps the floor soft and plain.

Right, then. Stand at your own door and pick the one detail that should carry from there; only one gets the long view. Which will it be in your room? Then try the pad in the [chair cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/chair-cushion-builder/) and browse more [bedroom cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bedroom-cushions/).

## Four kitchen chairs, nine fabric codes and one lime surprise

A buyer wrote in about four kitchen chairs with trapezoid seats: 15 in (38 cm) across the back, 18.75 in (47.6 cm) across the front, and 3 in (7.6 cm) thick. The worry was the zipper. Would a tapered cover still open and close properly?

The workshop explained that it sews each cover and inserts the 32-density foam itself, so the zipper is sized for easy removal and the foam holds the tapered shape.

The chairs sat next to patterned cafe curtains, and the buyer shortlisted nine fabric codes. The workshop sent close-ups of each and flagged one: olive 123 looks yellow-lime under white light. It also explained that its linen is a polyester blend with no coating.

The lesson carries straight into a bedroom. Check greens, and any color you care about, under your own lighting or with samples first. ## Buyer questions: tapered seats, swing backs and chair sets

**A common question:** My wooden chair seats are wider at the front than at the back. Can you still make cushions for them?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, tapered chair cushions are made to measure. Order through the chair cushion listing and add a simple sketch or photo marked with the front width, back width and depth, so the shape comes out exactly right.

**A common question:** Does a swing cushion order include the back cushions? And is one long backrest cheaper than several short ones?

**The workshop's answer:** The outdoor bench listing covers the seat only; back cushions are quoted separately. On one 72 in (182 cm) swing, four back cushions of about 18 x 21 5/8 in (45.5 x 55 cm) each cost the same together as one full-length backrest; that quote included foam inserts and shipping.

**A common question:** I'd like seat cushions and back cushions for my chairs. What do you need from me?

**The workshop's answer:** Both can be made in any size. Send the measurements with a photo of the chairs, or the name of the chair model, so the workshop can get the fit right.

## On the cutting table: the bedside chair pad

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Chair pad with ties, box edge |
| Fabric | Slate blue velvet |
| Piping | Contrast welt in mustard |
| Ties | Navy, finished in bows |
| Chair | White bedside chair |
| Light | Soft morning light through sheer white curtains |
| Reads from ten feet | The mustard outline |
| Reads up close | Velvet sheen and the tie bows |
| Best for | A bedside chair that doubles as a reading perch |

> On a chair cushion with ties, the piping is what carries ten feet across a bedroom; velvet sheen and tie bows only show up close.

> **Tailor's margin:** Take the piping color from the smallest warm accent in your bedding, like a few mustard flowers on a floral duvet, not from the walls.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is velvet a practical fabric for a bedroom chair pad?

For a bedside chair that holds books and clothes more than daily meals, yes. Velvet's sheen shows best in soft light, and its pile changes shade with the direction of the light, so the top and the box side can read slightly different.

### Where do the ties go on a chair cushion?

At the back corners, where they wrap around the chair's back posts or spindles. That anchors the pad so it doesn't slide when you set books or clothes on it. Ties can match the fabric or, as here, pick up a darker navy note.

### What three measurements define a tapered chair pad?

The front width, the back width and the depth from front to back. A quick sketch or photo with those numbers is enough; one set of kitchen chairs measured 18.75 in (47.6 cm) at the front and 15 in (38 cm) at the back.
