# A Silver Damask Piano Bench Cushion, and a Buyer's L-Shaped Bench Retold

*A letter from Rosa: a pale damask pad at the piano, then the story of a kitchen bench that taught us how a back line really adds up.*

> **The quick answer:** A piano bench cushion should match the bench top exactly and stay thin, because a thick pad raises the player's wrists at the keyboard. This one is a silver-gray and ivory damask with a boxed, self-piped edge on a black bench, so it is the only light surface at seat level. Measure seat height with the cushion included.

## A letter from the piano corner

Dear neighbor,

I read this photo from the bench up, the way a piano teacher would. A black upright, a black bench, and on it a pale [piano bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/piano-bench-cushions/) in silver-gray and ivory damask. It matches the bench top edge to edge, with a boxed, self-piped edge that keeps the player's position steady.

The thickness is modest on purpose. A thick pad raises the wrists at the keyboard, and a pianist feels that on the first chord.

[Damask](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/) earns its place here. Silver and ivory make the only light surface at seat level, so the eye goes straight to where you sit. The ivory ground repeats in the open sheet music. A paper cylinder floor lamp throws warm light across the weave and shows off its sheen; in cold daylight it would read flatter.

The rest is kept small. A potted plant on the piano, a black-framed map print on the wall, the black bench legs framing the pad from below. Nothing competes with the music or the seat.

If you play, measure your seat height with the cushion on before you choose a thickness. The [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) does the sums. What does your bench top measure, edge to edge?

## The question, the choices, the result: an L-shaped kitchen bench

Now the story I promised. A buyer messaged the workshop about an L-shaped kitchen dining bench. The question: seat cushions of about 93 1/4 x 22 1/2 in (237 x 57 cm) and 48 1/2 x 22 1/2 in (123 x 57 cm), in an outdoor fabric with white trim, plus back pillows along both walls.

The choices came next. They first asked for 2 1/2 in thick. The workshop recommended 2 or 3 in, and they chose 3 in (7.6 cm). Then the back pillows, which took real arithmetic; I've laid it out below. Anti-slip bases were added free.

The result: they called it beautiful. And the lesson has stayed on my workbench ever since. On an L, the second wall's back line includes the depth of the first seat. Leave it out and the backs come up short at the corner.

## Backrest cushion math, worked out step by step

1. **The long run**: Three of the backs are 31 in (79 cm) each, and three of them fill exactly the 93 1/4 in (237 cm) of the long seat.
2. **The short wall**: Its back line is not 48½ in (123 cm). It is 48½ + 22½ = about 71 in (123 + 57 = 180 cm), because the long seat's depth runs into the corner.
3. **Corner and remainder**: Take the corner pillow out of that 70¾ in (180 cm), and two backs of about 32 3/4 in (83 cm) fill what is left.
4. **Height**: All the backs were made at the standard 15 3/4 in (40 cm) height.

## Pinned by Rosa: pad, music, lamp and legs

Four pins: the silver damask pad, the sheet music, the glowing paper lamp and the black bench legs.

1. **Silver damask pad**: A pale damask stands out on a black bench and ties to the sheet music.
2. **Sheet music**: Cream pages repeat the ivory ground of the damask.
3. **Glowing paper lamp**: Warm lamplight rakes across the pile and shows off the damask sheen.
4. **Black bench legs**: The black frame and piano make the pale cushion the focal point.

## Buyer questions: matching color, trade projects and backrests

**A common question:** Is the orange linen in your photos the same color as the burnt terracotta velvet, or brighter?

**The workshop's answer:** It is very close. The small difference comes from how linen and velvet reflect light, not because the linen is brighter, so choose the fabric type you prefer.

**A common question:** I'm an interior designer. Can you take on custom banquette cushions and matching lumbar pillows for client projects?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send drawings with every dimension and your fabric codes; the workshop checks for inconsistencies, like two 50 in (127 cm) cushions on a 103 in (262 cm) run, before quoting. Matching lumbar pillows, for example 12 in (30 cm) tall in custom lengths, can be made, bulk orders can be discounted, and the workshop quotes making and delivery times with the order.

**A common question:** Can I buy a straight or a corner backrest by itself?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Straight and corner backrests are sold separately through their own listings, in colors such as dark brown. One buyer combined a 2-seater, a square ottoman, an extra backrest and 2 extra metal bars in a single quote.

## On the cutting table: the piano pad

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Piano bench cushion, fitted to the bench top |
| Fabric | Silver-gray and ivory damask |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Thickness | Modest, to keep wrist height at the keyboard |
| Bench | Black piano bench in front of a black upright |
| Light | Warm paper cylinder floor lamp |
| Best for | Players who want a steady seat |
| Before ordering | Measure seat height with the cushion on |

> **Tailor's margin:** On an L-shaped bench, the second wall's back line includes the first seat's depth. Add it before you divide the backs.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What thickness keeps a piano bench pad from changing my playing position?

Thin enough that your wrist height at the keyboard barely changes. Measure your seat height with the cushion included before choosing, and let a boxed edge keep the pad steady instead of adding thickness for comfort.

### Why choose damask for a piano bench?

A pale damask gives the only light surface on a black bench, so the seat reads clearly, and its woven pattern shows a soft sheen under lamplight. Silver-gray and ivory also repeat the sheet music on the stand.

### What thickness suits a kitchen bench seat cushion?

For one L-shaped dining bench the workshop recommended 2 or 3 in (5 or 7.6 cm), and the buyer chose 3 in. Thinner seats keep you lower to the table; thicker ones feel softer but lift you toward the tabletop.
