# A seafoam gingham corner floor cushion, and how to mix checks, stripes and plains around it

*Harlan reads a pale check floor seat in a blush-pink corner, counts the patterns in the room, and tells the story of a velvet cover that remembered its box.*

> **The quick answer:** A corner floor cushion in gingham mixes well with other patterns when each one works at a different scale. Here a pale seafoam check covers the seat and backrests, thin pastel stripes run across the rag rug, and everything else is plain or texture: seagrass, ceramic, oak. Keep to one pattern per scale and one color family.

## Pinned by Harlan

Five pins mark the dome floor lamp, the pale check seat, the blossom branches, the seagrass basket and the pastel rag rug.

1. **Dome floor lamp**: A white mushroom shade adds a clean curve that echoes the rounded seat front.
2. **Pale check seat**: A pastel gingham keeps a large floor piece from dominating a small pink room.
3. **Blossom branches**: Tall stems on both sides frame the seat and bring height to a low piece.
4. **Seagrass basket**: Natural fiber beside the seat stores throws and warms the pastel palette.
5. **Pastel rag rug**: Thin pastel stripes repeat the blue and pink without copying the check.

## Counting the patterns in a pink corner

Count the patterns in this corner and you get two. That is the right number.

The first is the gingham: a pale seafoam blue and white check on the seat and on both flanged backrest pillows. It is small and soft, so a big floor piece does not take over a small pink room. The second is the rag rug, thin pastel stripes in blue and pink. The rug repeats the colors without copying the check, and that is the whole secret. Two patterns can share a room when they do not share a scale.

Everything else is plain or texture. The blush wall is plain. The white dome floor lamp is plain, and its mushroom curve answers the rounded front of the seat. The backrest pillows stop below the lamp shade, which keeps the whole silhouette low and tidy. Cherry blossom branches in white ceramic vases stand on both sides and frame the corner the way curtains frame a window. The woven seagrass basket brings texture and a little warmth to all that pastel. The light oak floor holds it together.

Cool check, warm wall, low contrast. It feels restful because nothing is shouting.

I have watched folks pile a third and a fourth pattern onto a corner like this, my friend, and it always ends the same: the eye cannot find a place to sit. Keep to two, and let texture do the rest. See more [corner floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/), browse the [checked linen and gingham](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/checked-linen-and-gingham/) library, and size your corner with the [quarter-circle pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corner-floor-cushion-quarter-circle-size/).

## Five rules for mixing around a check

- ✓ Give each pattern its own scale: a small check, a thin stripe, never two the same size.
- ✓ Keep every pattern in one color family; the rug here repeats blue and pink and adds nothing new.
- ✓ Let plains carry the wall and the lamp, and let texture carry the rest: seagrass, ceramic, oak.
- ✓ Put the check on the backrest pillows too, so the seat reads as one piece.
- ✓ In a small room, stop at two patterns.

## The velvet that remembered its box

Velvet remembers. I have been saying it for fifty years, and one buyer learned it the hard way.

A customer wrote to the workshop for the floor ottoman with backrest, the one that ships with metal bars, and asked for dark mauve velvet 118 instead of corduroy. Lead time was one week of production plus 3 to 4 days of delivery.

The velvet arrived marked from compression. A few days of brushing and another week of rest did not lift the marks, so the shop agreed to make a replacement cover. That cover was held up by fabric supply and public holidays. When the customer then asked for a darker color, it was too late: the fabric was already cut.

The lesson: velvet shows compression marks more than other fabrics, and darker shades hide them better. A flat-woven gingham has no pile to crush, which is one more reason a check suits a floor seat that gets sat on hard. Read the [velvet care pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/velvet-bench-cushion-care/) before you choose a pile fabric for the floor.

## Buyer questions: custom sizes, a second sofa and what is inside

**A common question:** How much longer does production take if I change the size, and where do I write it?

**The workshop's answer:** Put the size in the order note. For one buyer, a custom size added a few days of production on the floor ottoman; the extra time depends on the piece, so ask the workshop for yours when you order.

**A common question:** If I buy one teddy floor sofa now, can I add a second one later and make a corner?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Add a second sofa plus an extra straight backrest and the two become a corner sectional. The straight backrest pieces are sold separately.

**A common question:** What foam density is inside the modular teddy sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** The seat is high-resilience cold foam, density T28 with an ILD of 42, which the shop calls firm but comfortable. The back cushions are filled with silicone ball fiber. In another reply the shop described the filling as 32-density sponge that lasts for years.

> **Tailor's margin:** Velvet shows compression marks more than other fabrics. On a floor cushion, choose the darker shade, or a flat gingham with no pile to crush.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How many patterns can go in one small reading corner?

Two is usually plenty: one on the cushion and one on the rug or a throw, at clearly different scales. Fill the rest with plain walls and textures like seagrass, ceramic and wood so the eye has somewhere to rest.

### Should backrest pillows match a gingham floor cushion?

Matching them keeps a floor piece reading as one seat, as the two flanged gingham backrests do here. If you want contrast, use a plain in one of the check's two colors rather than a new pattern.

### Is velvet a sensible choice for a floor cushion?

It can be, but velvet shows compression marks more than flat weaves, and marks from packing may not brush out. Darker shades hide them better. For hard daily use, a flat weave such as gingham is more forgiving.

### Does a pastel check work against a pink wall?

Yes, as a low-contrast pairing. A cool pastel check against a warm pastel wall reads restful rather than bold. Add white and natural materials, like the dome lamp and seagrass basket here, to keep it fresh.
