# A sand pinstripe custom bench cushion, and the stair landing it quietly remade

*Right, then. A bare landing, a slim ash bench and one striped cushion. I've laid out what changed, color by color, and the list I wish every buyer sent.*

> **The quick answer:** A slim bench on a stair landing becomes a real seat once it has a cushion cut exactly to its top, at a moderate depth that keeps the legs looking light. A fine sand pinstripe reads as a soft neutral from the stairs and adds texture up close. Choose a stripe one step darker than the floor, and list every detail in one message.

![Sand pinstripe cotton cushion on a slim pale wood bench under a window at the top of a white staircase](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/sand-pinstripe-bench-cushion-stair-landing-1600.webp "A fine sand pinstripe keeps a bright stair landing calm while adding texture up close.")

## Before and after: one cushion, nothing else moved

The landing in this photograph used to be a hallway with a view. Whitewashed walls, a gray-washed plank floor, a tall casement window, a curved oak handrail. Lovely, and nobody ever stopped there.

**Before:** a slim pale ash bench with square legs, bare wood, pushed under the window. It read as a place to drop coats.

**After:** the same bench with a sand pinstripe [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) cut exactly to its top. Nothing else moved. The sisal runner now leads from the stair head straight to a seat, and the landing has a reason to exist.

Why it works. The cushion is kept to a moderate depth, so those thin ash legs still look like they're doing honest work, not holding up a mattress. The stripe, from our [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) shelf, is no wider than a pencil line, so from the bottom step it reads as warm sand, and up close it has the texture a plain cloth lacks. The [self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) keeps the edge quiet. On a calm white landing, a contrast welt would be the loudest thing on the stairs.

And the bench sits beside the window, not right at the top step. Good light to sit in, and no stepping backward toward the stairs when you get up.

What would one cushion change on your landing?

## Pinned by Maggie: five marks between the stairs and the window

Five pins run from the sand pinstripe and the slim ash legs to the oak handrail, the framed sketch and the sisal runner.

1. **Sand pinstripe**: A fine stripe adds texture up close but reads as a soft neutral from the stairs.
2. **Slim ash legs**: A moderate cushion depth keeps a light-legged bench looking airy.
3. **Curved oak handrail**: The handrail's pale oak matches the bench frame and links them across the landing.
4. **Framed sketch**: A small artwork gives the white wall a quiet focus between console and window.
5. **Sisal runner**: The runner leads the eye from the stair head straight to the seat.

## Swatch strip: the landing, one step at a time

- Sand pinstripe — #CDBB9C — The cushion. One step darker than the floor, so it grounds the bench.
- Off-white ground — #F3EFE6 — The stripe's background, close to the walls, so the seat never jumps out.
- Pale ash — #D9C7A8 — Bench frame and handrail share it, which ties the stair to the seat.
- Gray-washed plank — #B9B4AA — The floor sets the rule for the stripe: one step darker, never two.
- Sisal — #BFA67E — The runner carries warm sand from the stair head to the bench.
- Pencil gray — #6E6A64 — The framed sketch, the only dark note on the wall.

## One list, one quote: the 61-inch bench done right

One buyer wrote in about a wooden bench and sent the best-organized message I've read in a long while. The cushion was 61 x 22¾ x 2¼ in (155 x 58 x 6 cm) in black fabric 132, and every detail came in one list:

- [blind tufting](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#blind-tufting), stitched through with no buttons
- piped edges
- firm high-density foam wrapped in [batting](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#batting)
- a [hidden zipper](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#hidden-zipper)
- hook-and-loop strips underneath

They also asked for the [Martindale](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#martindale) rating. The workshop had no lab figure for that cloth and said so plainly, describing it as heavy-duty upholstery. Then the carrier lost the samples. The workshop handled the claim, sent a fresh set, and held the sale price while the new swatches traveled.

I have quoted the same bench three times because the details arrived one email at a time. Write it all in one message. Our Pattern on [what to send for a quote](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-quote-what-to-send/) has the checklist.

## Buyer questions: thin seats, exact sizes and a toy chest

**A common question:** Is 2 inches a normal thickness for dining banquette seat cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop's banquette standard is 4 in (10 cm), but it will make 2 in (5 cm) if you prefer. All covers are zippered and washable, and for everyday dining a soft fabric or velvet is recommended. One pair made for a banquette measured 15¼ x 46¾ in and 15¼ x 63¾ in (39 x 119 and 39 x 162 cm).

**A common question:** My window seat is 54¾ x 26 in (139 x 66 cm), not the standard 55 x 23½ in (140 x 60 cm). Can the cushion be made to my exact size?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A tufted linen cushion was quoted at exactly that size, later adjusted to 54¾ x 25½ in (139 x 65 cm). Send the link to the listing you like and your color number, and the shop builds a custom order link at your size.

**A common question:** My IKEA Småstad toy chest top is 20½ x 35½ in (52 x 90 cm), but the menu stops at 19¾ x 35½ in (50 x 90 cm). Can you match it in corduroy?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Choose the closest option, 19¾ x 35½ in (50 x 90 cm), then write the real size, 20½ x 35½ in (52 x 90 cm), and your corduroy color code in the personalization box. The cushion is made to fit the chest exactly.

> **Tailor's margin:** Write tufting, edge, foam wrap, zipper and fastening in one message. One complete list gets one honest quote.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a cushion be on a slim-legged hall bench?

Keep it moderate and let the frame lead. On a bench with thin square legs, a tall cushion makes the piece look top-heavy, while a medium box edge keeps it airy. Check the finished sitting height with the seat height calculator before you choose.

### Will a pinstripe bench cushion look busy on a narrow landing?

Not if the stripe is fine and the color sits close to the floor. A pencil-line stripe blurs into a soft neutral from a few steps away, so the landing stays calm while the seat still has texture up close.

### Where should a bench go on a stair landing?

Beside the window rather than right at the head of the stairs. Good light makes it a place people actually sit, and a little distance from the top step means nobody steps backward toward the stairs when standing up.
