# A sand corduroy window seat cushion, read by hand

*Before anybody sits on a window seat, somebody runs a hand across it. This one invites the hand: sand corduroy, one linen pillow, and nothing else in the way.*

> **The quick answer:** A sand corduroy window seat cushion feels soft and ribbed under the hand, stands up to daily sitting, and shows lint and sun fading less than white. The cover comes off with its hidden zipper and machine washes at 86°F (30°C). For a very long seat, split the cushion into two equal pieces.

## What the hand finds first

The camera sits low and close, nearly at cushion height, so the corner seam, the piping and the ribbed border fill the picture. Those are the details folks ask about before they order, and whoever took this photo knew it.

Run a hand across this [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/). Sand [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) has ribs you can count with a fingertip, soft on the crest and firmer in the groove. Stroke it the other way and it feels a touch rougher and looks a shade darker. That is the nap. Cut every piece the same way and the color stays even.

At the corner, the border seam sits just off the edge, so the ribs wrap around without a lump. Self piping in the same sand keeps the line quiet.

The styling is cut down to three things. One oatmeal linen pillow at one end, because one pillow makes a small seat look longer. Three paperbacks set right on the cushion, to show how deep the pad is. A bud vase of dried flower heads on the deep sill, the only thing standing tall. The linen's flat weave is the one texture competing with the cord, and it loses politely.

## Five spots worth a fingertip

Where the cloth tells you how it was made.

1. **Corner seam and piping**: The border seam sits just off the corner so the ribs wrap without bulk.
2. **Sand cord top**: Sand shows lint and sun less than white on a much-used seat.
3. **Single linen pillow**: One pillow at one end makes a small seat look longer.
4. **Paperback stack**: Books sit on the cushion itself to show how deep the pad is.
5. **Dried-flower bud vase**: A tiny vertical accent is all this pared-back nook needs.

## How it wears, and how it washes

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and a window seat gets both. Sand is a forgiving color there. It shows lint and sun fading less than white, and it doesn't flinch at a muddy paw the way cream would. I'd pick it over white every time, neighbor. Who sits on yours most?

Every cushion comes with a hidden zipper, so the cover comes off and machine washes at 86°F (30°C). Once it is dry, brush the ribs with your palm and they stand back up. The [cover washing pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-wash-cushion-covers/) has the rest.

## Ten feet of window, two cushions

A buyer got in touch about a long built-in window seat, 29 in deep and 122 in long (74 × 310 cm). They asked about tufted linen cushions in custom sizes and wondered whether to make it two pieces or three.

The workshop went with two, each 29 × 61 in (74 × 155 cm), in the same color, and trimmed the quote. The parcel shipped the next day. The courier came while the family was away, so they rescheduled, and when the cushions finally landed on that seat, the word that came back was perfect.

Two equal cushions are easier to make, easier to ship, and easier to lift when the covers need a wash.

## Three questions from window-seat people

**A common question:** My seat is longer than the biggest size on the menu, over 90 in (229 cm). Can I still order it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A trapezoid cushion with a 98½ in (250 cm) back edge was made through a custom payment link, since the size went past the drop-down options. A sketch with every dimension was requested too.

**A common question:** Can you make backrest cushions to match my bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, in the same fabric, built one of two ways: firm foam like the seat, structured and upright, or a soft filled pillow, plumper and more relaxed. Say which look you want and send your sizes.

**A common question:** The color is exactly what I ordered, but it doesn't suit my room. Can I return or exchange it?

**The workshop's answer:** A color that matches the code ordered counts as preference, not a fault. In past cases a replacement cover in another color was offered at cost, with daylight photos of the options first. A return goes by the listing's return terms; past buyers paid the return shipping, and the refund followed once the cushion arrived back.

> A window seat longer than 10 feet is best split into two equal cushions: easier to make, easier to ship, and easier to lift when the covers need a wash.

> **Tailor's margin:** Sand corduroy hides lint and sun fading better than white on a window seat. Choose white only if nobody ever sits there.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Which way do the corduroy ribs run on the side of the cushion?

The side band is cut with the ribs running horizontally, so it wraps the cushion without joins. On the top, what matters is consistency: every piece cut the same way, so the nap and color stay even.

### Is corduroy soft enough for a reading nook?

Yes. Thick corduroy is soft on the ribs and warm to the touch, which suits a seat made for curling up. A flat linen pillow gives the hand a second texture.

### Why only one pillow on a small window seat?

One pillow at one end makes a small seat look longer and leaves room to sit. Matching pillows at both ends frame a seat nicely, but on a short one they eat the space.
