# A sand corduroy star floor cushion under fairy lights, and how ribs, plains and stripes share one corner

*Corduroy is a stripe you can feel with your eyes closed. Harlan reads a close-cropped playroom star for how texture, plain pillows and stripes get along.*

> **The quick answer:** A sand corduroy star floor cushion mixes easily with other patterns because corduroy's ribs already act like a quiet stripe. Pair it with plain pillows, here a cool sage lumbar and a white cloud, and give any bold stripe to just one other piece. Self piping finishes the star's edge cleanly, and sand sits between gray and white as a forgiving playroom neutral.

The lights pick out every rib.")

## Pinned by Harlan: ribs, lights and pine

Five pins, from the sand corduroy and its piped base seam up to the fairy-light strand that shows off every rib.

1. **Sand corduroy star**: Sand is lighter than gray and warmer than white, a forgiving playroom neutral.
2. **Self-piped base edge**: The piped bottom seam shows how cleanly the points are finished.
3. **Sage lumbar**: A cool sage against warm sand keeps the nook from feeling beige-on-beige.
4. **Fairy-light strand**: Little lights pick out the corduroy ribs in the evening.
5. **Pine storage with bins**: Natural pine matches the sand tone of the star.

## Corduroy is already a stripe

Run your hand across corduroy and you'll feel what the eye sees in this photograph: a stripe, raised instead of printed.

That's why this sand star floor cushion gets along with everything around it. The ribs give the pattern; the color stays plain. The fairy-light strands overhead pick out every wale in the evening, so the star reads textured without a single printed line.

Here's how I'd mix around a corduroy piece, my friend, the way it was taught to me on the shop floor:

- **One texture, then plains.** The sage green lumbar and the white cloud pillow are both plain. Against ribbed sand, plain fabric rests the eye. A second textured pillow would start an argument.
- **Warm against cool.** Sand is warm and sage is cool. The pair keeps the nook from going beige on beige, and the white cloud sits between them.
- **Stripes on one piece only.** Want a printed stripe in the room? Give it to one other cushion, like the striped star in the gallery, and keep its colors inside the sand, sage and white family. Where a stripe meets piping, match them; one gallery star shows stripe-matched piping on a pink canvas tip.
- **Wood counts as pattern.** The pine storage on both sides has its own grain, close to the sand tone, so the corner feels built around the star.

Now the edge. The **self-piped bottom seam** is the line this close crop was made to show. A star has more corners than any cushion in the shop, and every point has to be turned clean. A seam is a promise, and on a star you make it over and over.

The **white pegboard** with its small tray keeps the wall busy with a child's things instead of more fabric. See the [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) shelf for colors, the [star poufs](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/star-poufs/) for shapes, [kids' room cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-room-cushions/) for the rest of the room, and our [kid-friendly fabric](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kid-friendly-cushion-fabric/) Pattern. Stars can be made in outdoor fabric too, for a covered porch.

What's already the loudest pattern in your child's room?

## Swatch strip: five tones in the crop

- Sand corduroy — #CDB894 — The star. Lighter than gray, warmer than white.
- Sage lumbar — #9CAF88 — The cool plain that keeps sand from going flat.
- Cloud white — #F4F1EA — A plain shape sitting between warm and cool.
- Pine storage — #D8B98A — Wood grain close to the sand tone of the star.
- Fairy-light gold — #F2D38A — Evening light that picks out every rib.

## Three numbers that built a smaller sofa

A buyer in the US had a smaller living room and wanted a smaller version of the floor sofa. Their first ask was 66.9 x 39.4 x 27.6 in (170 x 100 x 70 cm). They bought the standard listing in brick corduroy, then sent the final numbers by message: 65 in (165 cm) wide, 35 in (89 cm) deep, 27.6 in (70 cm) high, with a 45 x 25 in (114 x 64 cm) seat and a 13.5 in (34 cm) seat height.

The sofa arrived exactly to measure. When the metal frames wouldn't hold together, a replacement set of four went out for the cost of shipping.

Here's what I'd have the young ones learn from it: give overall size, seat size and seat height as three separate numbers. That's enough to build a custom sofa right the first time. The [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) helps you find the third one.

## Buyer questions: seat foam, floor sets with backs, and a shorter sofa

**A common question:** What foam goes into the seat of the teddy floor sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** The seat mattresses use a medium-hard, high-density flexi foam rated 28 density (28 DNS). The standard outer covers are corduroy.

**A common question:** Can you make a custom floor seating set with a backrest and armrests?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, and each set is quoted to its size. Past examples include a 70 x 24 x 3 in (178 x 61 x 8 cm) velvet set with backrest and armrests, a 48 x 42 in (122 x 107 cm) reading nook cushion with a matching backrest and two bolsters, three kitchen nook floor cushions, and an L-shaped set for 140 and 115 in (356 and 292 cm) walls. Sets arrive filled and tufted.

**A common question:** Could the floor sofa be made shorter, say 60 or 68 in instead of 78.5 in?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Buy the standard sofa and leave the size you need, such as 60 in (152 cm) or 68 in (173 cm) instead of 78.5 in (199 cm), in the order note, and the workshop customizes it. Custom sizes also help when a buyer has mismeasured or needs the sofa to fit through a narrow door.

## On the cutting table: the sand star

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Star floor cushion, box edge |
| Fabric | Sand beige corduroy |
| Piping | Self piping along the bottom seam |
| Pillows | Plain sage green lumbar, white cloud pillow |
| Setting | Canopy nook between pine toy storage, fairy-light strands |
| Pattern rule | One texture, plains around it, stripes on one piece only |
| Other fabrics | Stars can also be made in outdoor fabric |
| Best for | Playrooms, kids' reading nooks and canopy corners |

> Corduroy ribs already act like a stripe, so a corduroy star floor cushion wants plain pillows beside it, not a second pattern.
>
> — Harlan

> **Tailor's margin:** For a custom floor sofa, send three separate numbers: overall size, seat size and seat height. One buyer's 13.5 in seat height arrived exact.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What kind of pillows go with a corduroy floor cushion?

Plain ones. Corduroy's ribs already bring texture, so a smooth plain pillow in a contrasting temperature, like cool sage against warm sand, looks calmer than a second textured or patterned pillow.

### Is sand a sensible color for a playroom floor cushion?

It's one of the more forgiving choices. Sand is lighter than gray and warmer than white, so it sits comfortably beside pine furniture and doesn't glare the way a bright white can in a busy room.

### Can a star floor cushion be made for a covered porch?

Yes. The workshop has confirmed star cushions can be made in outdoor fabric instead of corduroy, which suits a covered porch or a sunroom better than an indoor pile fabric does.
