# Salmon check chair pads with ties on a city balcony, and a small lesson in mixing patterns

*Two folding bistro chairs, a marble table, geraniums, and an iron railing with more curls than a wedding cake. Right, then: where does a check fit into all that?*

> **The quick answer:** A chair cushion with ties suits a folding bistro chair when the pad is shallow, cut to the seat's shape and tied at the back legs so it stays put through folding. On a busy balcony, a small salmon micro-check reads as one warm color from across the street, so it mixes with ornate ironwork and red geraniums without clashing.

## Three chair-pad questions before we step outside

**A common question:** My chair size isn't in the dropdown. How do I order custom pads for a set of chairs or bar stools?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the size range using the cushion's widest and deepest measurements, then write the exact size, thickness and fabric code under Add Personalization. If the seat is trapezoid-shaped or unusual, upload a drawing with the measurements marked. For eight identical chairs set the quantity to 8; if sizes differ, place separate orders. Square bar stool cushions are ordered the same way.

**A common question:** How should I measure a curved wooden rocking chair seat for a custom cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Make a paper template: lay paper on the seat, trace the edge, cut it out and write the widest width and the front-to-back depth on it. Lay it flat and photograph it from directly above with a tape measure in view; there's no need to mail it. The craftsmen may mark straight sections on the photo and ask for a couple of extra edge measurements.

**A common question:** Can you make firm replacement cushions for our chairs?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, in any size and thickness, with 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam that stays firm and doesn't flatten for years. Send length x width x thickness and the quantity for a quote.

## Counting the patterns on one small balcony

I counted the patterns on this balcony the way I count stitches. The wrought-iron railing is one, all scrolls and curls. The cream stone facades across the street are another, window after window. The marble tabletop brings its own veining. That's three before a single cushion arrives.

So the pads had to be the quiet voice, and a salmon micro-check is exactly that. The check is so small it reads as one warm color from across the street. Up close it turns out to be a check, and it hides breakfast crumbs rather nicely. A big plaid would have argued with the railing. A bold stripe would have fought the facades.

Here's the rule I'd pin to the door: when the setting is already full of pattern, choose the smallest-scale pattern you can find, or a plain. Save the bold print for a balcony with a plain wall.

## Pinned by Maggie over breakfast

Five pins, from the salmon check pad and its bow at the leg to the geraniums that repeat the color in a deeper key.

1. **Salmon check chair pad**: A tiny pink check reads warm from across the street yet hides breakfast crumbs.
2. **Bow tie at leg**: Ties at the back legs stop the pad sliding forward on a slatted folding seat.
3. **Second fitted pad**: Pads are cut to the folding seat shape, so they look fitted rather than borrowed.
4. **Espresso and croissants**: Breakfast on the table shows these pads are made for everyday use.
5. **Red geraniums in terracotta**: Geraniums repeat the salmon in a deeper key and are the classic city balcony flower.

## Why these pads look fitted, not borrowed

Folding bistro seats are small and a little curved, so the pads are kept shallow; a thick one would fight the fold. Each is cut to the seat's own shape, which is why they look fitted rather than borrowed from the kitchen. The how-to is in [measuring dining chair pads](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dining-chair-pad-measurements/).

Bows tie at the back legs. On a slatted folding seat, that's what stops a pad creeping forward every time the chair is folded and opened again. The fabric is a [water-repellent membrane](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/water-repellent-membrane/), sensible for a balcony that sees morning dew and the odd shower. The piping is self piping in the same check, because a contrast cord on a pad this small draws more attention than the pad deserves. I learned that one the hard way, dear, years ago, on a set of kitchen chairs I'd rather not discuss.

The props earn their places. Espresso and croissants on the marble show these [chair cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/) are for everyday use. Red geraniums in terracotta repeat the salmon in a deeper key. How many patterns can you count on your own balcony?

## An 8 ft 6 in wall, built from two pieces

One buyer wrote in from a new-build house with one long wall, about 102 in (260 cm). First they asked about a set of tufted cushions, 102 x 27 1/2 in (260 x 70 cm), with two 27 1/2 in (70 cm) squares. Then they changed course and asked for a teddy floor sofa the full 102 in long.

The snag: one sofa tops out at about 78 3/4 in (200 cm). So the shop proposed a separate 23 1/2 in (60 cm) section with its own backrest, which could also stand alone as a single seat. The buyer planned to come back once the house was finished.

I admire the ambition of a 102 in sofa. The cutting table has opinions, though. Very long runs are built from modules, so every piece stays within its maximum length; the layouts are in [modular floor sofa layouts](https://cushionguide.com/guides/modular-floor-sofa-layouts/).

> **Tailor's margin:** Tie bistro chair pads at the back legs. On a slatted folding seat, that bow is what keeps the pad from creeping forward every time the chair folds.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What thickness suits a pad on a folding bistro chair?

Shallow. Folding bistro seats are small and slightly curved, so a thin pad sits better and lets the chair fold. Fuller outdoor dining chairs usually take 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm), but a folding seat wants less.

### Can a check cushion work beside an ornate iron railing?

Yes, if the check is small. A micro-check reads as a single warm color from a distance, so it sits quietly beside scrolled ironwork, stone facades and veined marble. A large plaid or a bold stripe would compete with all three.

### Where do ties go on a folding chair pad?

At the back legs, tied in a bow. That keeps the pad from sliding forward on a slatted seat when the chair is folded and opened again. Note the tie position in the personalization box when you order.

### Do bistro chair pads need to follow the seat's shape?

They look far better when they do. A pad cut to the seat's own outline looks fitted, while a standard square overhangs a curved edge. Trace the seat with a paper template and send a photo with a tape measure in view.
