# A sage and cream velvet floor sofa in a room of plants

*Three layers of green. One pale seat. Hana reads the colors of a plant room, and the small finished details that keep a floor sofa calm.*

> **The quick answer:** A sage and cream velvet modular floor sofa suits a plant-filled room because the sage ends read as one more leaf tone while the cream seat stays the palest, most restful spot. The standard set measures 78 x 39 x 14 in (200 x 100 x 35 cm) overall, with two seat cushions, two L-shaped backrests and four metal support bars.

## The palette, leaf by leaf

- Cream velvet — #EDE6D3 — The seat. The palest thing in the room, so the eye rests here.
- Sage velvet — #9DAE8A — The end blocks and bolster caps. They read as leaves, not fabric.
- Pothos green — #5C7D3F — The middle layer, trailing from the wall shelf.
- Jute and wicker — #C3A677 — Rug and baskets. Warmth at floor level.
- Sheer white — #F6F5F0 — The curtains. They soften the light so the green stays fresh.

## Pinned by Hana: three heights of green

Read the pins from the ceiling down: planter, shelf, floor, then the two places where the sofa meets the plants.

1. **Hanging planter**: Plants at ceiling height start the layering from the top.
2. **Pothos shelf**: The middle layer of green trails down toward the backrests.
3. **Wicker baskets and palm**: Floor plants and baskets complete the third layer.
4. **Sage-capped bolster**: The cream bolster is the palest thing in the frame, so it reads as the resting spot.
5. **Sage base end**: Sage acts like another leaf tone among the greenery.

## Where the hand shows

Look at the join first. Sage meets cream at the end of the seat in one straight line. There is no piping to hide it. On a two-fabric floor sofa, that seam is the detail you will see every day, so it has to run true from top to floor.

The box edges are unpiped too. Velvet folds over the corner and down the side wall. Without a welt, the corner has to be cut and closed cleanly, or it puckers. Here it sits square.

The bolster has sage caps on a cream body. Circles are the hardest shapes to sew evenly. When they are right, you do not notice them.

Then the pile. Velvet has a direction. On a sofa made in panels, every panel should run the same way, or one looks lighter than its neighbor in the afternoon.

The room does the rest. A macramé planter hangs from the ceiling, pothos trails from a wall shelf toward the backrests, and a yucca palm, a leafy plant in a white pot and wicker baskets hold the floor. The eye moves in a circle, and the sofa sits in its middle. Sheer curtains diffuse the light, so the greens stay fresh instead of dark.

If you keep plants, match one textile to your foliage. Only one. Browse the [velvet shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/), the [modular floor sofa atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/) or the [support bars Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-support-bars-assembly/). Which leaf in your room would you match?

Straight seam.
Square corner.
Round cap.

## A rental, a water-green sofa and four bars

A buyer in the US was furnishing a rental. She chose the floor sofa in water-green corduroy, the standard 78 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm) size.

She asked about a spare cover set, so one could be washed while the other was in use. The workshop quoted it. She held off, because the covers came off and washed easily.

Then the bars. The set has four metal support bars, and she wrote to ask where they go. Two at the sides. Two at the back.

For a rental, removable, washable covers mattered more than a second set. Height is a feeling, and so is ease.

## On the cutting table: the plant-room floor sofa

| Backrests | Two L-shaped, each 39 x 39 x 15 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm) |

## Buyer questions: firmness, color numbers and sizes

**A common question:** Do these floor cushions stay firm, or do they go flat once you sit?

**The workshop's answer:** They are filled very generously, so they hold firm and do not compress much. If you want a very dense cushion, for example as a guest bed on a wooden frame, foam filling is an option. The workshop can send a video of the cushion being pressed down.

**A common question:** Which velvet number is the terracotta rust in your photos? Is #14 an orange?

**The workshop's answer:** Velvet #14 is closer to terracotta than orange. The rust in the main photos is #17, and #64 is a dark green. Ask for photos of the exact numbers you are weighing before you decide.

**A common question:** What are the exact measurements of the floor sofa and each of its parts?

**The workshop's answer:** Overall it is 78 x 39 x 14 in (200 x 100 x 35 cm). It has two floor seat cushions of 78 x 39 x 6.5 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm), two L-shaped backrest pillows of 39 x 39 x 15 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm), and four metal support bars.

> **Tailor's margin:** In a room full of plants, match one textile to your leaves, never two, and keep the seat the palest thing in the frame.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do you pick a floor sofa color for a room full of plants?

Match one fabric to your foliage and keep the seat paler than everything around it. Sage ends read as another leaf, and a cream seat becomes the obvious place to rest. Sheer curtains keep the greens from turning dark.

### What finishing details should I check on a two-color floor sofa?

Look at the seam where the two colors meet; it should run straight from top to floor. Check that unpiped box corners sit square without puckering, that bolster caps are round and even, and that the velvet pile runs one way.

### Do I need a spare cover set for a floor sofa in a rental?

Usually not. One buyer furnishing a rental asked about a second set, then held off because the removable covers washed easily. A spare set is a convenience, not a necessity.
