# A sage palm window seat cushion in a plaster arch, and the rule for mixing patterns

*One leafy print, one plain linen throw, a little stack of books. Rosa reads a deep plaster alcove where one pattern does all the talking.*

> **The quick answer:** A patterned window seat cushion mixes best with one plain and one textured piece, never a second print of the same scale. Here a sage palm print carries the pattern, an oatmeal linen throw supplies the plain texture, and the cushion stays about 2 in (5 cm) thick so the deep plaster reveal still reads as wall. Add stripes only on a separate seat.

## Why one palm print is plenty in a plaster arch

My grandmother ran her porch on one rule: one loud aunt per Sunday, and everybody else wears beige. A window seat runs on the same rule, and this plaster arch proves it.

The [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) is a slim box, about 2 in (5 cm) thick, with no piping at all. The limewashed reveal is deep enough to be architecture, and a fat cushion would turn it into furniture. Kept thin, the seat reads as part of the wall, a windowsill that learned to be comfortable.

The fabric is a sage palm print on cream. Beyond the glass stand olive trees and lavender, and the sage carries them indoors. Soft overcast light keeps that green quiet, right for long afternoons with a book.

Nothing else in the alcove is accidental. The oatmeal linen throw breaks the long straight front edge and spills over it, plain and soft. Two stacked hardbacks give the jug a plinth and tell anyone walking by what this seat is for. The jug of white wildflowers stands tall at the end where the arch curves in, so that corner never looks empty. And the white arched window frame does the job piping would have done: it draws the one crisp line in the picture.

## Pinned by Rosa: five things the arch is holding

Five pins, from the slim box front to the lavender beyond the glass.

1. **Slim box front**: Kept to about five centimeters so the thick plaster reveal still reads as architecture.
2. **Draped linen throw**: The throw breaks the long straight edge and hangs over the front for softness.
3. **Wildflower jug**: Tall stems add height at the end where the arch curves in.
4. **Stacked books**: Two books give the vase a plinth and show the seat is for reading.
5. **Lavender garden view**: Sage fabric echoes the olive leaves outside, carrying the garden indoors.

## Print, plain and texture: the three-part rule for a window seat

Here is the rule that settled most color arguments on my old porch.

- **One pattern carries the seat.** Here it is the palm. A second print at the same scale starts a fight.
- **One plain brings the calm.** The oatmeal throw is the plain, and so is the white frame.
- **One texture adds touch.** A linen slub, a nubby weave, a bouclé pillow. Texture reads as a solid from across the room and as interest up close.
- **Stripes go somewhere else.** In the gallery, a branch-line stripe looks right on an L-shaped garden bench because nothing else there is printed. On this sill the palms would have to shout over it.

If you do want stripes in a [reading nook](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/) like this one, keep them narrow, put them on a small lumbar pillow, and pull one color straight from the print. The [stripe direction guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) covers which way they should run.

The palm here is [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), a sensible cloth for a sill that takes hours of sun through glass.

So tell me: what is the one loud aunt in your house, a print, a stripe or a color?

## A window seat built around an air conditioner

A buyer got in touch about a long window seat with a problem squatting right in the middle: an air-conditioning unit. They needed one large rectangular cushion with a rectangular notch cut from the center, so the unit could breathe.

The shop asked for a drawing with every size marked, and sent the buyer to a separate linen color chart so the fabric would be chosen by number, not by memory.

Here is the lesson I'd tape to the refrigerator, neighbor. For any cut-out, mark three things on the drawing: the notch width, the notch depth, and its distance from each end of the seat. Skip that last one and the notch can land off center. The [notched cushion guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/notched-cushion-cutouts-posts-casings/) walks through the drawing.

## Buyer questions: long seats, matching colors, a quote

**A common question:** My window seat is 29 in deep and 122 in long. Could you make tufted cushions for it, maybe in two or three pieces?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The shop split the 122 in (310 cm) seat into two equal tufted linen cushions, each 29 x 61 in (74 x 155 cm). The fabric was chosen by its color number, the order shipped the next day, and delivery took 3 to 5 days.

**A common question:** How do I pick a color that goes with the furniture and wallpaper I already have?

**The workshop's answer:** Send a photo of the room or the set taken in good light, and the shop suggests fabric codes. For one wallpaper it proposed calm beiges, khaki greens, olives and browns, with mustard or burnt orange as accents. It can also send large close-up photos of individual fabric rolls.

**A common question:** Can you give me a price for a custom rectangular cushion in my size?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The shop quotes from your measurements, and the same price appears on the listing once you pick the matching size range. Quotes have covered everything from a 30 3/4 x 15 3/8 in (78 x 39 cm) cushion with contrast piping to a 132 3/4 x 22 x 2 in (337 x 56 x 5 cm) piece with a non-slip base.

## On the cutting table: the sage palm alcove

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Window seat cushion for a deep plaster arch alcove |
| Shape | Rectangle, fitted wall to wall |
| Fabric | Sage palm print on cream, outdoor acrylic |
| Thickness | About 2 in (5 cm), slim box |
| Edge | Box edge, square corners |
| Piping | None; the white window frame draws the line |
| Styling | Oatmeal linen throw, two hardbacks, a tall jug of wildflowers |
| Measure | Wall to wall at the back and at the front |
| Best for | Reading nooks, sunny sills, deep plaster reveals |

> On a window seat, let one print do the talking, then add a plain throw and one texture. Two prints of the same scale on one sill start an argument.

> **Tailor's margin:** If your sill is deep plaster, measure wall to wall at both the back and the front, and ask for square box corners.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a cushion be on a deep plaster window ledge?

About 2 in (5 cm) keeps a deep reveal looking like part of the wall, as in this alcove. Go thicker only if the seat is a daily perch and the window height allows it.

### Can a printed window seat cushion share a nook with striped pillows?

Yes, when the scales differ and they share a color. Keep the printed seat as the one large pattern, then add a narrow stripe on a small lumbar pillow that repeats one shade from the print. Two big prints of similar scale compete.

### Is outdoor acrylic a sensible fabric for an indoor window seat?

On a sunny sill, yes. Outdoor acrylic is woven to stand up to sun and weather, which suits a seat that takes hours of light through glass. A soft linen throw balances its crisper hand.

### Why does this palm window seat cushion have no piping?

The white arched window frame already draws the crisp line. An unpiped box edge keeps the sage print soft against limewashed plaster, where a contrast welt would add a second outline to a picture that only needs one.
