# A sage houndstooth outdoor cushion on weathered teak, and the props that belong beside it

*Two props in this photograph: a gray teak board and a garden out of focus. That is not thrift. That is the whole styling lesson.*

> **The quick answer:** Style a sage houndstooth outdoor bench cushion with things that can stay out in weather: gray teak, living green, and pillow covers cut from the same outdoor range. A small two-tone check reads as a soft solid from a few steps away and hides dust and water marks up close, so the props around it can stay simple.

## Pinned by Callum

Five pins on one corner, from the upper cord to the gray teak underneath.

1. **Squared box corner**: Top panel, boxing and piping meet at one point, a sign the corner was pinned before sewing.
2. **Upper piping cord**: Self piping in the check weave defines the edge without a contrasting line.
3. **Micro houndstooth weave**: A small two-tone check hides water marks and dust better than a flat solid.
4. **Lower piping cord**: Piping on both edges of the boxing helps the cushion keep a crisp shape season after season.
5. **Weathered teak edge**: The gray teak shows the neutral backdrop this cool check was chosen to sit on.

## Why a close-up needs only two props

Shot this close, the photograph is about workmanship. The top panel, the band and both piping cords meet at one point, a clean right angle. That only happens when the corner is pinned before it is sewn. The cords are self piping, cut from the same check, so the edge is drawn without a contrasting line. Piping on both edges of the band helps a box cushion keep a crisp shape season after season.

The cloth is a micro houndstooth in sage and cream. From a few steps away it reads as a soft solid. Up close it breaks into a tiny two-tone check, and that check swallows garden dust and dried water marks that a flat pale solid would show by lunch.

Now the props. The weathered teak underneath has gone silver-gray, the neutral this cool check was chosen to sit on. Behind it, the garden is a green blur. That is the whole set: one wood, one living color. Neither needs carrying indoors when the sky turns, and both will outlast any weather this cushion sees.

Outdoor styling is a sea chest, not a dresser. Everything on deck should be something you can stow fast. What will you be carrying in when the first squall comes through? Keep that list short, friend. The [outdoor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/) hub and the [water-repellent membrane fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/water-repellent-membrane/) are the place to start.

## Props that earn a place on an outdoor bench

- ✓ Pillow covers in the same outdoor range, or in its cream: one buyer paired 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) and 20 x 20 in (51 x 51 cm)
- ✓ Weathered teak or gray timber underneath, so a cool check sits quietly
- ✓ A pot of rosemary or a clipped hedge behind: living green that needs no storing
- ✓ Self piping to keep the check calm, contrast piping only if you want a drawn line
- ✓ Ties at the corners where the frame has a rail to hold
- ✓ Nothing you cannot carry in before a storm

## Six covers over old inserts

A buyer in the US had two identical outdoor lounge chairs with three cushions each, and the inserts were still good. What they wanted was six zippered covers to slip over them, matching throw pillow covers, contrast piping, and one particular brand-name outdoor fabric.

The workshop said plainly that it does not stock that brand and offered its own outdoor fabrics, then asked for photos and a drawing with sizes. The buyer offered to send in their own fabric. That is not something the workshop can take, so it offered to match the color from a photo instead.

The sizes did the rest: two each of 31.5 x 31.5 x 3.5 in, 26.5 x 26.5 x 3.5 in and 12 x 28 x 3.5 in, plus 24 in and 20 in square pillows. Good measurements beat a brand name in any weather.

## Outdoor questions

**A common question:** Can you make waterproof cushions for an outdoor couch, with ties and no piping?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, in the outdoor water-resistant fabric range. One set was a 48 x 24 x 5 in (122 x 61 x 13 cm) seat and a 48 x 18 x 3 in (122 x 46 x 8 cm) back, no piping, with ties at the two corners of the long sides. Garden floor cushions can be made in the same outdoor fabrics.

**A common question:** Which color comes closest to avocado green for vintage camper cushions, with harvest gold piping?

**The workshop's answer:** Code 123, an olive green velvet, is the closest to avocado. For harvest gold piping, look at 920 or 921: 920 leans mustard, 921 is more yellow, and 919 is the orange. The workshop sends swatch photos side by side, plus a photo of a finished cushion in the piping color.

**A common question:** Can I send back just the cover and swap it for another color?

**The workshop's answer:** Return shipping is costly and falls to the buyer, so the workshop suggested making a new cover in the preferred color instead, priced to cover only making and shipping it. That buyer's piped cover was 18 x 53 in (46 x 135 cm).

> Six outdoor cushion covers were made to slip over old inserts from measurements alone: 31.5 in, 26.5 in and 12 x 28 in pieces, all 3.5 in thick.

> **Tailor's margin:** If a plain solid shows every leaf and water mark, choose a two-tone micro check in the same color. It reads solid from a few steps away.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is houndstooth a good pattern for outdoor cushions?

A small one is. A two-tone micro check reads as a soft solid from a few steps away, yet it hides garden dust and water marks better than a flat solid. Keep it in the same color family as the rest of the set.

### Can I get new covers for outdoor cushion inserts I already own?

Yes. Send the width, depth and thickness of each insert, with photos and a drawing. Covers can be made from measurements alone, in the workshop's own outdoor fabrics rather than a branded cloth.

### Should outdoor cushions have piping at all?

It is a choice. Piping on both edges of the band keeps a box cushion crisp, while a no-piping cushion with ties gives a softer, simpler look. Self piping in the same check hides the line; contrast piping draws it.

### Do outdoor cushions need to come inside?

Yes, before heavy weather and for the off-season. A water-resistant cloth sheds a shower, but it does not turn a cushion into a boat. Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything.
