# A sage green window seat cushion with mustard piping, and the mistakes it dodged

*A letter from Rosa about a farmhouse window seat that got five things right, and the ones she's watched folks get wrong for years.*

> **The quick answer:** The most common window seat cushion mistakes are measuring the old cushion instead of the seat, choosing a green from a tiny thumbnail, rounding the corners of an angled bay, picking a piping color nothing in the room repeats, and forgetting the backrest. Measure every edge of the seat itself and ask for close-up photos of shortlisted fabrics before ordering.

## A letter from the window seat

Neighbor,

Pull up a chair. I want to show you a window seat that did nearly everything right, so you can skip the mistakes I've watched folks make for years.

A sage green [linen-look](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) cushion with mustard piping, laid on cream shaker cabinets with bar pulls and knobs. Outside the glass: bare trees and the gray clapboard house next door, early spring, not a leaf yet. Sage and mustard are a flower-border palette waiting on its flowers, and they stay cheerful on a gray day.

At each end stands a tall, deep wedge backrest with a matching sage pillow in front, so the seat reads like a little two-ended sofa. Two people could read here facing each other, feet in the middle. Books, a small bowl and a gray mug on a coaster sit mid-seat, proof the top stays flat.

The gray knit throw hung over a drawer front cools down all that yellow, and a gray woven rug softens the dark wood floor. Nothing is fussy. Every piece earns its spot.

What's under your window right now: cabinets, a radiator cover, a plain ledge? Whatever it is, start with the Pattern on [how to measure a window seat](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-window-seat-cushion/), then browse more [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) built for a [reading nook](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/).

## Pinned by Rosa

Five pins, from the mustard welt to the gray rug that keeps the floor quiet.

1. **Mustard contrast piping**: Yellow on sage is a garden palette that stays cheerful on gray days.
2. **Tall wedge end**: A deep wedge at each end makes the seat read like a small two-ended sofa.
3. **Books and a small bowl**: A flat, firm top holds a book stack upright on the seat.
4. **Throw over a drawer front**: A cool gray throw calms the yellow piping.
5. **Gray woven rug**: The rug softens a dark floor and picks up the throw's gray.

## Five mistakes this window seat didn't make

- ✗ Measuring the old cushion instead of the seat: take every edge of the cabinet top itself
- ✗ Choosing a green from a thumbnail: tiny images make sage, olive and forest look alike
- ✗ Curving an angled corner: bay corners are angles, and a rounded cushion leaves gaps
- ✗ Picking piping that repeats nothing: mustard works here because warm wood and brass echo it
- ✗ Skipping the backrest: without the wedge ends this is a ledge, not a place to read for an hour

## Two greens that looked like twins

A buyer got in touch wanting a window seat cushion 37.5 x 64 in (95 x 163 cm), 4 in (10 cm) thick, in forest-green linen. On a screen, two greens, L-58 and L-59, looked like twins. So the shop sent close-up photos of both, and the buyer chose L-59 in one solid color.

When the size option first showed a higher price, the shop reapplied the sale. And because the buyer was away on a trip, it held the shipment so the cushion arrived after they got home.

The lesson I'd tape to every fridge: ask for close-ups of your shortlist before you choose. A thumbnail can't tell one green from another. The Pattern on [swatches before ordering](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) walks through it, and for an angled bay the [bay window calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bay-window-calculator/) keeps the corners honest.

## Buyer questions: sizes off the menu, odd shapes, angled bays

**A common question:** My bench size isn't on the list. How do I order a custom size?

**The workshop's answer:** Choose the closest size on the listing (the shop will tell you which) and type your exact dimensions, thickness, fabric code and piping choice into the Personalization box. A 36 x 12 in cushion went through the 16 x 32 in option, and two 17 x 19.5 in seat pads through 18 x 18 in with a quantity of 2. The makers cut to your numbers, not the drop-down.

**A common question:** My window bench isn't a perfect rectangle; it's angled, notched or curved. How do I order?

**The workshop's answer:** Use the custom-shape (trapezoid) listing. Pick the size ranges for total length at the widest point and total depth, then upload your drawing with every edge measured, plus a photo of the seat if you have one. The cut follows the drawing; the totals only set the price range. Two different shapes means two orders, each with its own drawing.

**A common question:** My bay seat has angled corners. Should the cushion curve, or should I measure every edge?

**The workshop's answer:** Measure every edge. Bay corners are angles, so a curved cushion would leave gaps. Order through the trapezoid listing by your longest edge and depth, and upload a drawing with every edge, including the angled sections. Even a large bay with a 98.5 in (250 cm) front, 62.5 in (159 cm) back and 23 in (58 cm) depth has been made as one continuous cushion.

## On the cutting table

| Bay corners | Measured as angles, never curved |
| Best for | Reading nooks, farmhouse kitchens, bedroom windows |

> Choose piping color from something small already in the room: a mustard welt on a sage window seat cushion works because warm wood and brass pulls repeat it.

> **Tailor's margin:** Ask for close-up photos of every green on the shortlist. On a thumbnail, sage, olive and forest can pass for the same color.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What piping color goes with a sage green cushion?

Mustard, cream or a deeper green all work. Mustard is the cheerful choice and suits rooms with warm wood or brass hardware that repeat the yellow. Cream piping reads quieter, and self piping in sage is the calmest of all.

### Does a window seat cushion need a backrest?

Not always, but for reading it helps. Tall wedge ends at each side, each with a pillow in front, turn a ledge into a small two-ended sofa you can lean into from either side.

### How thick should a window seat cushion be?

Four inches (10 cm) is a common choice; the buyer in this Reading ordered a 37.5 x 64 in cushion at 4 in thick. Sit on the bare seat first and check that your knees and the window sill still feel right with that height added.

### Can a large bay window cushion be one piece?

Yes. Big bays with several angles have been cut as a single continuous cushion. What makes it work is the drawing: every edge and every angled section written down before anything is cut.
