# A sage daybed cushion with brown piping, read from the foam out

*A daybed is sat on at noon and slept on at midnight. The fabric is what you see. The foam is what you live with.*

> **The quick answer:** A made-to-measure daybed cushion is built on high-density upholstery foam, a filling comfortable for sitting by day and sleeping at night. Thickness sets the height: one buyer's twin daybed covers measured 39 × 75 × 8 in (99 × 190 × 20 cm), and for a floor bed the workshop suggests 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm).

## Five cards from one photograph

Five pins, each a small reason the daybed looks settled.

1. **Sage bolster**: The bolster's color is repeated in the rug's faded field.
2. **Dark brown piping**: Brown piping links the cushion to the herringbone floor and book spines.
3. **Tray with plant**: A small plant on the tray repeats the green at eye level.
4. **Fringed throw**: A folded cream throw lightens the open end.
5. **Matching rug**: The rug's sage border sits the daybed on a color it belongs to.

## Inside the sage

The inside comes first.

A [daybed cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/daybed-cushions/) like this one is filled with high-density upholstery foam. Here the seat and the backrest both keep a clean box edge, and the round sage bolster closes the far end.

Height is a feeling. Thickness decides it. For two twin daybeds, one buyer chose covers 8 in (20 cm) deep. For a floor bed, the workshop suggests 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm), so you sit higher off the floor, and about 60 in (152 cm) wide for one adult.

If you are unsure how firm to go, the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) asks the right questions. Do you sit on your daybed more than you sleep on it? The answer changes the thickness.

## Why the piping is brown

Dark brown piping runs along every edge. It links the sage cushion to the herringbone floor and to the book spines on the built-in shelves.

Sage appears twice, in the seat and in the rug's faded field. The daybed sits on a color it belongs to. A small plant on the tray repeats the green at eye level. A cream fringed throw, folded at the open end, lightens it. A linen drum lamp waits for evening.

The fabric is [linen-look](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/), quiet enough in texture to let the piping line do the drawing.

Find a rug that already holds your cushion color.
Take the piping from the floor.
Let the shelves do the rest.

## Two twins and a green couch

Two twin daybeds, one green couch to match: that was the message. Each cover was 39 × 75 × 8 in (99 × 190 × 20 cm).

In photos, the workshop's green corduroy looked lighter than the couch. The workshop explained the lighting and said the corduroy came in only one green. It suggested a soft fabric in a nearer shade and shared the color charts. The buyer also asked about a charcoal-gray option, anthracite.

Photos shift greens. A swatch held next to the couch does not.

## Asked about the inside

**A common question:** Can one cover wrap two stacked mattresses so they work as a sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One removable zippered cover can enclose two IKEA MORGEDAL mattresses of about 35 3/8 × 74 3/4 × 7 in (90 × 190 × 18 cm) as a single block about 14 1/8 in (36 cm) thick. Order through the daybed cover page, choose full set or cover only, and write the exact size and fabric code in the personalization note.

**A common question:** Could I use a floor cushion as my bed, and how wide should it be?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. For one adult of about 5 ft 2 in, the workshop suggested around 60 in (152 cm) wide and 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm) thick, to sit higher off the floor. The filling is comfortable to sleep on.

**A common question:** What is the inside made of, and is it toxic?

**The workshop's answer:** The inside is high-density upholstery foam. The fabrics come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239), a label under which textiles are tested for harmful substances. If you have a specific allergy or certification question, ask the workshop before you order.

> **Tailor's margin:** Take the piping color from the floor: a dark brown welt on a sage daybed cushion ties the seat to a dark herringbone floor and the book spines.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can I order just the cover for a daybed mattress?

Yes. The daybed page offers a full set or a cover only. For a cover, send the exact width, length and thickness of the mattress you already own, together with the fabric code you have chosen.

### How do I match a daybed cushion to a rug?

Look for a rug that already contains your cushion color, then take the piping color from the floor tone. A sage cushion on a rug with a sage field, finished with a dark brown welt, is one example.

### Why does a green fabric look different in photos?

Camera and screen lighting shift greens, so a green can look lighter in a photo than in the room. Color charts help, but to match an existing couch, hold a physical swatch beside it in daylight.

### Is 8 inches a good thickness for a daybed cushion?

It suited one buyer's twin daybeds, and for a floor bed the workshop suggests 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm). Thicker sits higher, so check the finished height against your frame and the way you sit.
