# A custom bench cushion in sage diamond on teak, through four seasons in a stone courtyard

*Roses in June, bare wisteria in January. The bench stays out all year. The cushion should not always stay with it.*

> **The quick answer:** A sage and ivory diamond outdoor bench cushion suits a stone courtyard because a small pattern reads as texture from a distance and sits quietly beside busy stone, roses and a patterned rug. Split any seat longer than about 79 in (2 m) into two pieces, so it is easy to carry in before storms and to store for winter.

## What the courtyard asks of the cushion

Stone walls hold heat. A pergola throws shade that moves all day. This teak bench sits in both.

The cushion is a [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) in [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), a small sage and ivory diamond, box-edged, with self piping. The diamond is small enough to read as texture from across the courtyard. That matters next to honey limestone, climbing roses and a faded kilim. Sage and ivory come straight from the olive leaves and the stone.

A plain sage lumbar pillow repeats the pattern's ground color and calms the print. Pink roses bring the warmth, so the cushion can stay cool green. A jug of sunflowers on a gray side table is the one hot accent. The kilim's diamonds repeat the cushion's at a bigger scale, and terracotta hexagon tiles keep the floor warm to the eye.

## Five spots I would check after a storm

Five spots on the photograph, from the roses overhead to the kilim underfoot.

1. **sage diamond cushion**: A small diamond reads as texture from a distance next to busy stone.
2. **plain sage pillow**: A solid pillow in the pattern's ground color calms the print.
3. **climbing roses**: Pink roses give the warmth, so the cushion stays cool green.
4. **sunflowers in jug**: One hot yellow accent lifts the whole corner.
5. **kilim rug**: The rug's diamonds repeat the cushion pattern at a bigger scale.

## The same bench, four seasons

**Spring.** Pollen and wisteria petals land on everything under a pergola. A small two-tone pattern hides a light dusting better than a plain pale seat. Brush it off dry.

**Summer.** Dappled light moves across the seat all afternoon. Turn the cushion now and then so it ages evenly, and set the pillow in a different spot each week.

**Fall.** Stand the cushion on its long edge after a shower so water drains from the seam, or carry it under cover when the forecast turns.

**Winter.** Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything. Store them dry, off the stone floor.

Ask whether a fabric is [water-repellent or waterproof](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/); the two words mean different things. The [outdoor care Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-care-winter-storage/) covers washing and storage, and more [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) live next door. What does your bench face, morning sun or afternoon?

## A 111-inch built-in seat, cut in two

A buyer messaged the workshop about a built-in seat with a backrest: 111 in (283 cm) long and 17 in (43 cm) deep, with the backrest about 16 in (40 cm) high.

The workshop recommended making the seat in two pieces, for durability and easier handling. The buyer agreed.

That advice counts double outside, friend. One cushion that long is a sail when the wind picks up and a heavy chore when rain comes sideways. Two pieces come in one at a time, and either can be replaced on its own if it takes the worst of the weather.

## Creases, foam wraps and corners:

**A common question:** My bench cushion arrived with a crease right down the middle. Can I iron it out?

**The workshop's answer:** No need to iron. Creases from compressed packing relax by themselves within 7 to 10 days.

**A common question:** Is the foam wrapped in anything, or is it just a bare block inside the cover?

**The workshop's answer:** It is not a bare block. The foam is wrapped in polyester fiber (Dacron) before it goes into the cover, which softens the surface and gives a fuller, rounder look instead of hard edges.

**A common question:** What is the difference between the closed-corner and the open-corner sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** The closed-corner version has a corner backrest that closes the corner, while the open-corner version uses a straight backrest. Choose the one you want from the options, and the workshop sends photos of both.

## On the cutting table: the courtyard bench

| Piping | Self piping |
| Foam | Wrapped in polyester fiber (Dacron) for a rounder edge |
| Long seats | Split beyond about 79 in (2 m) |

> **Tailor's margin:** Split any outdoor bench cushion longer than about 79 in into two pieces. Two halves come in faster when the storm does.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should an outdoor bench cushion be patterned or plain?

In a busy setting, a small pattern. A little diamond reads as texture from a distance, so it sits calmly beside stone, roses and a patterned rug. Pick one whose ground color matches your walls, and add a plain pillow in the pattern's color.

### When should outdoor cushions come inside for the winter?

Before the first frost. Let them dry right through first, then store them indoors, off the floor and out of damp air. A cushion put away wet is the one you will be sorry about in spring.

### Why is bench cushion foam wrapped in fiber?

The polyester fiber wrap, often called Dacron, softens the surface and rounds the edges, so the cushion looks full rather than blocky. It sits between the foam and the cover, which is why a finished cushion has soft shoulders instead of hard corners.

### Is one long bench cushion better than two?

Past about 79 in (2 m), two pieces are usually the better call. They are easier to handle, ship and replace, and outdoors they come in faster when weather turns. One buyer's 111 in seat was made in two for exactly those reasons.
