# A sage bouclé window seat cushion, put through a year of real life

*Rosa takes a quiet reading nook and asks the loud question: what happens after the photographer leaves and the family moves in?*

> **The quick answer:** A bouclé window seat cushion ages well in a reading nook if it sits out of hard direct sun, keeps drinks on a coaster, and has a zippered cover. Have the corners cut to the built-in's radius so nothing overhangs to catch knees and paws. If a window swings over the seat, the foam must be cut under that height limit.

![Sage bouclé window seat cushion with tonal piping on a rounded-corner oak box seat, with ivy, open book and cup](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/sage-boucle-window-seat-rounded-oak-built-in-928.webp "Sage bouclé, trailing ivy and warm oak: a small window seat set up for reading.")

## Every nook is perfect for one afternoon

Every reading nook looks perfect for exactly one afternoon: the afternoon somebody photographed it.

This one is lovely, I'll give it that. A sage bouclé cushion lies on a warm oak built-in beside a linen curtain, in soft north light. The oak box has one rounded front corner, and the cushion's own corner is softened to follow it, so the fabric never pokes past the wood. Tonal piping, sage on sage, keeps the outline neat without drawing the eye. Trailing ivy spills from a wall niche and repeats the green in something alive.

But I ran an upholstery shop for twenty years, and I know what a seat looks like after a year of family. So let's ask the question that matters about this window seat cushion. How will it age?

## Pinned by Rosa

Five pins, from the ivy in its niche to the rounded oak corner the cushion follows.

1. **Trailing ivy niche**: Ivy spilling from the niche repeats the sage of the cushion in living green.
2. **Open book**: The book sits on a firm, level pad, which is what a reading seat needs.
3. **Cup on wood coaster**: A small wooden tray protects the fabric and ties to the oak base.
4. **Tonal piped edge**: Sage-on-sage piping keeps the outline neat without drawing the eye.
5. **Rounded oak corner**: The oak box has a rounded front corner, and the cushion corner is softened to follow it.

## Sun, spills, paws and the open book

**Sun.** North light is the kind light. It never lands hard on the seat, so a soft green like this keeps its color longer than it would in a south window. If your nook faces the afternoon sun, read [how window seat cushions fade](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-fading-sun/) before you fall for a pale shade.

**Spills.** Look at the stoneware cup. It sits on a small wooden coaster, not on the fabric, and that coaster ties back to the oak base. A tray or coaster at the reading end is the cheapest insurance a bouclé cushion will ever have. The cover unzips for a gentle wash at 86°F (30°C), then air dries; no tumble dryer.

**Paws and small hands.** Kids and dogs are the real quality control. The rounded corner helps here: with no square tip hanging over the edge, there is nothing to catch a knee or a tail on the way past. Bouclé's loops are its charm and its soft spot, so keep claws trimmed and toy buckles away. The [bouclé and teddy care notes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/boucle-teddy-cushions-snags-care/) cover snags.

**The book.** An open book lies flat on the pad. That tells me the foam is firm and level, which is what a reading seat needs. A soft, sagging cushion tips your book and your back.

Who sits in your window most, the reader, the child or the dog? Order for that one. More nooks like this are gathered in [reading nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/), and the fabric lives with [bouclé and teddy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/).

## A window that swings over the seat

A buyer wrote to the workshop with a problem I had never met on a porch. Their window opened inward, right over the window seat, so the cushions could be no thicker than 0.8 in (2 cm). Two of them, in corduroy: 67.9 x 21.3 in (172.5 x 54 cm) and 51.2 x 20.9 in (130 x 53 cm).

The first delivery went wrong, and I won't pretend otherwise. It came in plastic wrap without a box, one zipper was broken, and the foam was cut unevenly, bulging to 1.6 to 2 in (4 to 5 cm) inside the cover. The replacement was made to the old sizes instead of the updated 68.1 to 68.5 x 22 in (173 to 174 x 56 cm), and the foam alone measured 1 in (2.6 cm).

After a long back-and-forth, the shop made a third set, confirmed every dimension with the buyer before shipping and sent it by express courier: 68.1 x 22 x 0.8 in (173 x 56 x 2 cm) and 44.5 x 22 x 0.8 in (113 x 56 x 2 cm).

Here is what I took from it. When there is a hard height limit, the foam must be cut under it and the cover sized so it cannot bulge. And confirm the numbers again before every remake, no matter how tired everybody is.

## On the cutting table: the rounded built-in

| Fabric | Sage bouclé |
| Piping | Tonal self piping, sage on sage |
| Corner | Cut to the oak box's radius so nothing overhangs |
| Foam | Firm and level, so a book lies flat |
| Light | Soft north light, kind to a pale green |

| Daily habit | Cups on a coaster or tray, never on the fabric |
| Best for | Reading nooks and window seats used every day |

## Buyer questions: L-shapes, velvet piping and back cushions

**A common question:** Could you make L-shaped cushions to my own sizes? The standard ones are a little off.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. For benches the shop usually suggests making the L in two pieces and asks for the bench width. One order paired two L-shaped backrests, 55 x 39 in and 39 x 55 in (140 x 100 cm and 100 x 140 cm), with two corduroy covers for 79 x 55 x 12 in (200 x 140 x 30 cm) mattresses.

**A common question:** Can the body be one fabric and the piping another, say linen with velvet piping?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, a linen body with velvet piping, or any other mix, is no problem. Write both codes in the personalization note when you order, one for the body and one for the piping, and it is made that way.

**A common question:** Do you make the back cushions too, or only seats?

**The workshop's answer:** Back cushions and backrests are made too. Share the size and the specifications you want, and they are made to measure like the seat.

> **Tailor's margin:** If a window swings over the seat, cut the foam under the height limit and size the cover so it cannot bulge past it.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is bouclé a good choice for a window seat that gets daily use?

It is soft, textured and restful to look at, which suits a reading seat. Its loops can catch claws and buckles, so keep pets' nails trimmed and drinks on a coaster. The zippered cover washes gently at 86°F (30°C) with no tumble dryer.

### How do I order a cushion for a built-in with a rounded corner?

Measure the radius of the rounded corner along with the length and depth, and ask for the cushion corner to be cut to it. That way the fabric follows the wood and nothing overhangs to catch a knee or a paw.

### What does tonal piping do on a pale cushion?

Tonal piping, cut in the same shade as the body, keeps the outline crisp without drawing a line around the seat. On a quiet green in a small nook, it lets the plant and the curtain supply the detail.

### How thin can a window seat cushion be under an opening window?

One buyer's cushions were made at 0.8 in (2 cm) so an inward-opening window could clear them. The foam has to be cut under the limit, the cover sized so it cannot bulge, and every number confirmed before production.
