# A rust velvet porch swing cushion made for sitting till dark

*Rosa steps back from a rope-hung teak swing on a covered porch and reads what makes a cushion worth staying on for a whole book, a laptop session or a long sunset.*

> **The quick answer:** A porch swing cushion built for long sitting covers the whole slatted seat, stops at the arms, and is thick enough to hide the slats without lowering the armrests too far. Rust velvet works under a porch roof through the dry months. Where rain reaches the swing, keep the color and switch to an outdoor weave.

## Pinned by Rosa: five stops on the porch

Five pins walk from the rust velvet seat out to the eucalyptus wreath, marking what makes this swing easy to stay on until dark.

1. **Rust velvet seat**: The cushion covers the slatted seat fully, so no gaps show between arm and cushion.
2. **Cream pillow**: Plain and striped pillows in one color give variety without adding a new color.
3. **Knit throw**: A throw over the arm tells you the swing is used into the cool evening.
4. **Eucalyptus wreath**: The wreath hangs right behind the swing and frames it from a distance.
5. **Jute rope**: Chunky rope repeats the warm, natural tones of the teak and velvet.

## Why this swing keeps people until dark

Some swings you sit on for a minute. This one you settle into with a mug and a paperback, and you look up only when the meadow goes gray.

The [porch swing cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/porch-swing-cushions/) is a rust [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) box, self piped, and it covers the teak seat from arm to arm. No slats peek out at the back or sides, so nothing presses into your legs an hour in. It is thick enough to hide the slats but not so thick that the armrests drop too low. That matters when you read: your elbow wants somewhere to land.

The color is the low sun, pure and simple. Rust velvet catches the gold coming off the meadow, and the white railing and plank ceiling frame it like a picture. The pillows stay in the cream family, one plain and one ticking stripe, so the swing reads as one warm shape from across the yard. The cable-knit throw over the arm tells you people stay out past the evening chill. The mug on the little side table means somebody has already settled in. The chunky jute ropes and the eucalyptus wreath on the post repeat the warm, natural browns.

A swing cushion should never slide when you laugh. For long sitting, that is half of comfort, and our [tie placement Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-tie-placement-chairs-swings/) shows where the ties go.

## A long-sitting checklist for a swing cushion

- ✓ Covers the full slatted seat, arm to arm, with no gaps at the back.
- ✓ Thick enough to hide the slats, thin enough to keep the armrests useful.
- ✓ A back pillow or two you can shift as you read, work or doze.
- ✓ Ties at the back so the cushion stays put while the swing moves.
- ✓ Velvet only under a roof in the dry months; an outdoor weave anywhere rain can reach.

## The couch they bought twice

A buyer in the US loved a tufted velvet floor couch, 28 x 60 in (70 x 150 cm), so much they ordered a second one in pink. There was a snag. The color chart had been renumbered since the first order: the old pink 15 was now 119, and the order dropdown still showed numbers under 100.

The shop confirmed the right pink in writing, took the confusing dropdown down, and asked for codes in the personalization box instead.

Here is why I tell this on a porch page, neighbor. The cushions you sit on longest are the ones you will want again, for a second swing, a glider, a matching bench. Keep the code, and when you reorder, confirm old and new numbers in writing. What would you want a second one of?

## Buyer questions: chair ties, a lone ottoman, copies

**A common question:** Can you make tie-on cushions for my vintage ladder-back dining chairs?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a photo, a simple diagram with the dimensions including both the left and right side edges, and how many you need. Ties go at the back to hold each pad, and the covers are removable and washable. One set was four 4 in (10 cm) pads with sides of about 11 in (28 cm) and front and back edges of 13 in and 14 in (33 and 36 cm).

**A common question:** Can I buy only the ottoman from the corner floor sofa set?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The ottoman is sold on its own, or together with a straight backrest and a metal bar. It measures 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm).

**A common question:** Can you copy the seat and back cushions I already have on my dining chairs?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send photos with the dimensions and the workshop replicates them. Seat and back are quoted together per chair; ask whether shipping is in that figure.

> A porch swing cushion for long evenings covers every slat and stops at the arms. Make it too thick and the armrests sit too low to lean on.

> **Tailor's margin:** Write the fabric code down and keep it. Charts get renumbered: one velvet pink went from code 15 to code 119.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a swing cushion be when the swing has armrests?

Thick enough to hide the slats, but not so thick that the armrests end up too low to rest on. Check the height from seat to armrest top before you order; for everyday sitting, 3 to 4 in is the usual range.

### Can a velvet cushion live on a covered porch swing?

Under a solid roof, velvet can stay out through the dry months. Bring it in for the wet seasons, and if rain or blowing spray reaches the swing, choose an outdoor weave in the same color instead.

### Why do cream pillows suit a rust velvet swing so well?

Cream stays in the background while rust carries the color. Mixing a plain cream pillow with a cream ticking stripe adds variety without a new color, so the whole swing reads as one warm shape from a distance.

### What stops a porch swing cushion from creeping forward while the swing moves?

Ties at the back, fastened around the slats or frame, hold the cushion in place, and a non-slip base helps on smooth seats. Keep the ties snug, and check them at the start of each season.
