# Rust velvet on a modular floor sofa, up close: the seam, the corner and the foam behind them

*One corner of a floor sofa in warm side light. The stitching tells you about the sewing. The shape tells you about the foam.*

> **The quick answer:** A modular floor sofa depends on foam that fills its cover, and a crisp, square box corner is the visible sign that it does. Ask for density and firmness in writing before you order. One floor sofa from a past order measures 39 x 79 in (99 x 201 cm) overall, with about 50 to 51 in (127 to 130 cm) of seat between the arms.

## Entry one: what the corner is telling you

The camera stops a hand's width from one corner. That is where a floor sofa tells the truth.

A rust [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) end block meets a cream velvet seat along one straight vertical seam. Along the top edge runs a line of even topstitching. There is no piping here. The stitching carries the edge and holds the box shape square, so the corner stands up instead of rounding off.

Warm side light moves across the pile. The rust turns copper where the light lands and brown where the corner turns away. One fabric, two colors, depending on the angle.

Behind, the bolster and a large-leaf plant go soft. Shallow focus is a choice. It keeps you on the construction of this [modular floor sofa](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/), not the styling.

## Pinned by Hana: four points on one corner

Four pins, from the rust end block to the bolster in soft focus.

1. **Rust velvet end block**: The pile shifts from copper to brown as it turns the corner.
2. **Topstitched top edge**: Even topstitching along the edge keeps the box shape crisp.
3. **Cream velvet seat**: The cream panel meets the rust with a straight vertical seam.
4. **Bolster in soft focus**: Shallow focus keeps the eye on the construction detail.

## Entry two: what is inside, and why the corner shows it

A box corner is foam made visible. The cover is a shell. If the foam inside is too soft or cut short, the top edge sags and the topstitching starts to wander. If the foam fills the cover, the corner stays square, as it does here.

A floor sofa asks a lot of its foam. You sit low, you lean back, children climb it. It needs to be firm enough to hold that corner, and kind enough that sitting near the floor still feels like sitting on a sofa.

I do not guess firmness from a photograph, and you should not either. Ask the maker for the density figure and the firmness. For comparison, a busy family kitchen banquette from a past order was built on 32-density medium-firm foam. The [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) and the notes on [density versus firmness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-vs-firmness-ild/) help you read the numbers you are given.

Tufted floor cushions add one more layer: buttons. They are sewn on by hand, and the small thread under each one is meant to be there.

## Entry three: an L from two sofas, and a 30 in gap

A returning buyer in the US already owned a water-green teddy floor sofa. They ordered a second one, with one corner backrest and one straight backrest, and the two sofas became an L.

Later they asked for an ottoman in the same color, and for a custom one 30 in (76 cm) wide to fill a gap. The workshop sold the standard ottoman, 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm), but could not make that width. Backrests are bought separately.

They also noticed the sofas slide a little on the floor, and planned to wrap the metal bars underneath in grip mat. The [support bar notes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-support-bars-assembly/) cover the same slide.

Modules come in fixed sizes. Plan the room around them, not the other way around. What does your wall measure, corner to corner?

## Measurement table: rust and cream floor sofa

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Modular floor sofa with backrest and bolster |
| Fabric | Rust velvet end blocks with a cream velvet seat |
| Construction | Straight vertical panel seam; topstitched top edge, no piping |
| Overall (past order example) | 39 x 79 in (99 x 201 cm) |
| Seat between arms | About 50–51 in (127–130 cm) |
| Seat depth | 24 in (61 cm) front to back |
| Foam | Ask for the density figure and firmness; the box corner shows whether it fills the cover |
| Modules | Fixed sizes; standard ottoman 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm); backrests sold separately |
| Best for | Low living rooms and L-shaped layouts |

## Buyer questions: seat width, cushion depth and loose buttons

**A common question:** How wide is the seat itself, between the arms?

**The workshop's answer:** The sofa is 39 x 79 in (99 x 201 cm) overall. Take away the armrests and about 50 to 51 in (127 to 130 cm) of seat is left from side to side. The 24 in (61 cm) figure given first was the seat measured front to back.

**A common question:** The listing only gives the back cushion size. How deep is a standard floor cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Usually 24 or 27 in (61 or 69 cm) deep. Pick a size from the listing or send custom measurements, for example 4 ft x 27 in x 8 in (122 x 69 x 20 cm).

**A common question:** The buttons on my tufted cushion feel loose. Is something wrong with it?

**The workshop's answer:** The buttons are sewn on by hand, and the small thread under each one is part of how they are attached, so don't cut it. A spare button comes with the order, and the workshop sends a short video on re-securing one. Pulling, often by children, is what loosens them.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a floor sofa between the arms, not across them. A sofa 79 in wide overall seats about 50 in once the armrests are taken away.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why is there no piping on this floor sofa?

The edge is finished with topstitching instead. A line of even stitching along the top holds the box shape square without adding a cord, which suits a velvet block where the change from rust to cream already draws the line.

### Can a floor sofa module be made to a custom width?

Modular floor sofas come in fixed module sizes. One buyer asked for a 30 in (76 cm) wide ottoman to fill a gap and was offered the standard 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm) ottoman instead. Plan the room around the modules.

### Why does rust velvet look like two colors in one photo?

Velvet pile reflects light differently as it turns a corner. Under warm side light, the rust here reads copper on the lit face and brown on the shaded one. Check a swatch in your own room's light before choosing.

### What stops a floor sofa sliding on a hard floor?

One owner noticed a little slide on a hard floor and planned to wrap the metal support bars underneath in grip mat. The Pattern Room notes on support bars cover assembly and grip in more detail.
