# A rust suede-look daybed cushion, tested against ordinary life

*Walnut, brass, one throw, no pillows. A spare room shows every mark. Here is what children, paws, coffee and afternoon sun will do to it.*

> **The quick answer:** A suede-look faux leather daybed cushion handles daily life well if you blot spills at once, keep it out of long direct sun, and accept that a brushed face shows every stroke as a change of shade. Claws mark every fabric. For sleeping or small children, a washable soft performance weave is the easier choice.

## Pinned by Hana: five notes in evening light

Five pins, from the piped end of the bolster to the brass on the nesting tables.

1. **Rust bolster**: The brushed surface shifts shade as it curves, which makes a round bolster look almost velvety.
2. **Piped end cap**: A self welt around the circle keeps the bolster end flat and crisp.
3. **Bare seat top**: No pillows at all: color and brushed texture are decoration enough.
4. **Cream knit throw**: One pale throw at the far end lightens the corner without hiding the fabric.
5. **Nesting tables**: Brass-trimmed walnut tables repeat the platform legs for a matched mid-century set.

## Read the daybed before you test it

A walnut platform on brass legs. A rust cushion across it, box-edged, with a self welt. A round bolster along the wall. One cream knit throw at the far end. Nothing else.

The seat is thick enough to hide the slats and thin enough to keep the platform's floating line. That is the proportion to copy. Height is a feeling, and here it says low and unhurried.

The fabric is a suede-look faux leather in rust and burnt orange. On the flat seat it reads matte. On the curve of the bolster the brushed surface turns lighter and darker as it rolls, almost like velvet. A self welt around each end cap keeps the circle flat.

The walls are warm clay plaster. The floor is dark herringbone under a jute rug. Walnut and brass nesting tables repeat the legs. In dim evening light the cushion is the brightest thing in the room. That is the point.

No throw pillows. The color is the decoration.

## Five tests, one brushed cushion

| Test | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Children | Sticky hands and shoes mark a brushed face | Blot, then brush the nap one way; a washable soft weave suits a playroom better |
| Pets | Claws mark every fabric; a paw leaves a trail of changed shade | Lay the throw where the animal settles; brush the nap back |
| Spills | Rubbing spreads a stain and flattens the nap | Blot at once with a dry cloth, then a barely damp one |
| Sun | Indoor fabrics have limited UV resistance and can fade in long, strong sun | Turn the cushion end to end each season; draw a sheer on summer afternoons |
| Guests | The daybed becomes a bed | On daybed sets only the seat cover comes off for washing; filled bolsters are spot-cleaned |

## Two mattresses, one cover, 11 3/4 inches

A buyer wrote with a daybed mattress of 31 1/2 x 78 3/4 x 8 1/4 in (80 x 200 x 21 cm). The plan had changed. Two mattresses, each 5 7/8 in (15 cm), would now be stacked under one cover.

The workshop offered two heights. 8 1/4 in (21 cm), the old number. Or 11 3/4 in (30 cm), the new stack. The buyer chose 11 3/4 in, so both layers sit inside one zippered cover.

A cover is measured on what it will hold.
Not on what it held before.
The tape goes on the stack.

## Buyer questions: parts of a set, fabric limits, a thick twin

**A common question:** Can I buy just the mattress cover and the back pillows from a Hemnes daybed set?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Two filled backrests and a mattress cover without foam can be ordered on their own. The standard backrests are L-shaped to wrap the sides; a straight, back-only pillow of about 36 x 12 in is made through a custom listing.

**A common question:** Is there any fabric I can't use for a bench cushion or a daybed mattress cover?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Velvet, the soft performance weave, linen and linen-look, and the outdoor range all work for bench cushions and daybed covers, and families can be mixed, such as a linen body with velvet piping. Velvet is indoor-only and not water-resistant, so choose the outdoor range for anything that may get damp.

**A common question:** Will your daybed slipcover fit a twin mattress that is 12.5 inches thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The zippered corduroy daybed cover is made to your mattress, so write the sizes in the order; a standard twin is 39 x 75 x 12.5 in. For one buyer, order to door ran 9 to 11 business days to the US.

## On the cutting table: the rust daybed

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Daybed seat cushion with a round bolster |
| Fabric | Rust suede-look faux leather, brushed face |
| Piping | Self welt on the seat and around each bolster end |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Bolster | About 8 in (20 cm) across as standard, 10 in (25 cm) possible; arrives filled |
| Cover | Zippered seat cover; zipper on the back edge or the underside |
| Care | Blot and wipe; filled bolsters are spot-cleaned, not washed |
| Best for | Living-room daybeds in soft, indirect light |

> A daybed cover for two stacked 5 7/8 in mattresses is ordered at 11 3/4 in, the full stack, not the height of the mattress it replaced.

> **Tailor's margin:** Indoor fabrics have limited UV resistance. Turn a daybed cushion end to end each season so the sun shares its work.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is faux suede a sensible choice for a daybed used every day?

Yes, with habits: blot spills at once, brush the nap one way, and keep it out of long direct sun. If the daybed is a child's bed or a guest bed most nights, a washable soft performance weave is easier to live with.

### Why does the bolster look darker on one side?

A brushed surface reflects light by the direction of its fibers. On a round bolster that direction changes all the way around, so one side looks lighter and one darker. It is the same effect that makes velvet shade, and it is not a flaw.

### How big should an armrest bolster be on a daybed?

The standard round bolster is about 8 in (20 cm) across, with 10 in (25 cm) possible, and any size can be made. For an armrest, the length matches the seat depth or runs about 4 in (10 cm) shorter.

### Can a dog or cat share a faux leather daybed?

They can, but claws mark every fabric, and a brushed face shows each paw as a change of shade. Lay a throw where the animal settles, and look at the pet-friendly weaves if claws are a daily event.
