# Rust, cream and a geometric: a stack of custom throw pillows that shows how to mix

*Élodie reads a three-pillow stack like a small mosaic: one bold, one bridge, one pattern, and a cream line that ties them together.*

> **The quick answer:** To mix custom throw pillows, choose one bold color, one neutral in the same texture, and one pattern whose light tone matches that neutral. In this stack, rust bouclé leads, cream bouclé bridges, and a black and cream geometric jacquard repeats the cream, so the set suits most neutral sofas. Tonal piping keeps each edge neat.

![Stack of three piped throw pillows in rust bouclé, cream bouclé and black and cream geometric jacquard with olive sprig](https://cushionguide.com/media/throw-pillows/rust-cream-geometric-throw-pillow-stack-oak-1600.webp "A three-pillow stack puts rust, cream and a graphic weave side by side, each with its own matching piping.")

## Pinned by Élodie: five tiles in the stack

Five pins, from the rust pillow on top to the olive sprig that brings the only green.

1. **Rust bouclé pillow**: The set's bold color goes on top.
2. **Cream bouclé pillow**: The neutral bridge between rust and the geometric weave.
3. **Geometric jacquard pillow**: Its cream yarn matches the middle pillow.
4. **Cream piping line**: Tonal cords keep each pillow's edge neat.
5. **Olive sprig**: A single green note against warm neutrals.

## The stack as a palette

- Rust — #A8502F — The bold one, so it goes on top.
- Cream — #EDE3D1 — The bridge: the rust's texture and the pattern's light yarn in one pillow.
- Ink black — #1E1B19 — The geometric's dark line, grounding the warm pair.
- Olive sprig — #7D8455 — A single green note, borrowed from outdoors.
- Oak — #C7A278 — The table, warming everything from below.

## One bold, one bridge, one pattern

My friends, a stack is how a tailor compares pillows. Laid flat, one on another, they show the three things that matter at once: the piping line, the loft and the texture.

Rust bouclé goes on top, because the set's boldest color should lead. Cream bouclé sits in the middle, the same curly pile in a quiet shade, so the texture carries on while the color rests. At the base, a black and cream geometric jacquard whose cream yarn matches the middle pillow exactly. That shared cream is the whole trick. It turns three different pillows into one sentence.

These are knife-edge pillows, soft at the sides, each piped in a tonal cord that keeps the edge neat without adding a new color. The cream line along the right side reads almost like a stitch holding the stack together.

The olive sprig is the only green, a small window left open. The oak and the pale plaster wall stay out of the way, which is what good props do. Soft, even light shows the loops of the bouclé against the flat weave of the jacquard, rough beside smooth.

Copy the recipe for any neutral sofa:

- one bold solid in a texture you love
- one neutral in that same texture
- one pattern whose light tone matches the neutral
- piping in each pillow's own color

The eye sits down first. Build the set in the [pillow cover studio](https://cushionguide.com/studio/pillow-cover-studio/), browse [throw pillows](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/throw-pillows/) and [bouclé and teddy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/), and read [matching throw pillows and lumbar pillows](https://cushionguide.com/guides/matching-throw-pillows-lumbar-pillows/). Which color on your sofa would you let lead?

## Covers for a couch that had been raised

A buyer had raised their couch by adding foam under the seat cushions, and now needed covers only. Three pieces, all 4 in (10 cm) thick: 66 1/8 x 24 3/4 in (168 x 63 cm), 44 1/2 x 24 3/4 in (113 x 63 cm) and 22 1/2 x 24 3/4 in (57 x 63 cm).

The shop pointed them to the zippered cover listing, where you enter the foam sizes, and the covers wash at 86°F (30°C). Then came the color question. The couch was a pale sage chenille, so the shop asked for daylight photos and suggested the closest fabrics from them, leaving the final choice to the buyer. A cream was an acceptable alternative.

When you already own the foam, order covers to the foam's exact size, not the couch's. And match color in daylight, never under a lamp. The [covers for existing foam pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/) walks through it, and [cushion covers](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/cushion-covers/) shows the finished pieces.

## Buyer questions: a whole house, two bolsters and mattress covers

**A common question:** Can you handle a whole house project: a very long indoor sofa seat, an outdoor daybed and decorative pillows?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. An indoor seat 197 in (500 cm) long, 31 1/2 in (80 cm) deep and 4 in (10 cm) thick in off-white linen was made in three parts. An outdoor daybed cushion 86 5/8 x 35 3/8 x 4 in (220 x 90 x 10 cm) came in off-white outdoor fabric, and striped linen decorative pillows were priced by size and design. Firm high-density foam was used, as requested.

**A common question:** Can I get round bolsters for armrests, cut to the depth of the seat?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Floor sofa sets come with round armrest bolsters, and custom cylinder armrests, for example 23 5/8 in (60 cm) long, are quoted together with the seat and back cushions.

**A common question:** Can you make corduroy covers for mattresses I already have, with the zipper on the long edge?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Brown corduroy covers were made for two 39 3/8 x 78 3/4 x 7 in (100 x 200 x 18 cm) mattresses and one 35 3/8 x 74 3/4 x 5 1/2 in (90 x 190 x 14 cm), and another pair for 29 1/2 x 74 3/4 in (75 x 190 cm) and 53 1/8 x 76 3/4 in (135 x 195 cm) mattresses.

> **Tailor's margin:** When you already own the foam, order covers to the foam's exact size, and match the color from a daylight photo.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can bouclé and jacquard throw pillows share one sofa?

Yes, when they share a color. Here the cream bouclé and the cream yarn in the geometric jacquard match, so the smooth weave and the curly pile read as one family despite the change in texture.

### Which pillow goes in front in a mixed set?

Put the boldest color forward or on top, the neutral beside it, and the pattern where it can repeat the neutral. The bold one draws the eye first, and the others give it somewhere calm to land.

### Why is the piping on each pillow in this stack a different color?

Each cord is matched to its own pillow: rust on rust, cream on cream, cream on the geometric. Tonal piping sharpens every edge without adding a fourth color, so the mix stays at three.
