# Rust corduroy on a slim oak bench: a notebook on edges and corners

*Harlan reads an entry bench cushion that stands as tall as the side rail beneath it, with self piping turning every corner clean. Box, knife, rounded or angled: here is why this one is boxed.*

> **The quick answer:** A box-edge cushion suits a slim oak entryway bench because its straight sides stand about as tall as the bench's side rail, so the cushion looks built in rather than top-heavy. Self piping keeps the corners crisp in rust corduroy with lengthwise ribs. A knife edge belongs on chair pads, rounded corners where people brush past, and angled corners only where the frame demands them.

## Notebook: the cushion stands as tall as the rail

First thing I look at on any bench is the side rail. On this light oak entry bench, the rust corduroy cushion stands about as tall as that rail. That is why it looks built in. Go much thicker on slender legs and a bench starts to look like it is wearing a hat.

The edge is boxed: straight sides, a flat top, square corners. The self piping follows each corner and holds the box shape, the way a good welt should. A seam is a promise, and a piped corner is where you find out whether it was kept.

The ribs run lengthwise. That way they catch light down the whole bench, and anybody sliding along to pull on boots brushes the nap the same way every time. Corduroy keeps a record of every hand that brushes it, so settle the direction before the cutting starts.

The color is rust with a terracotta warmth, set against pale oak, white porcelain tile and a cream wall. Rust and light oak are an old, warm pair; in a bare white hallway they look deliberate. One prop carries the same earthy note, a bamboo lantern vase with bare twigs. One strong color and one natural object is all a narrow entry needs, my friend. Anything more and folks trip over it.

See the [entryway and mudroom cushion room](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/), the [corduroy shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/), the [custom bench cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) and the [wale and nap direction pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corduroy-cushions-wale-nap-direction/). How tall is the rail on your bench?

## Pinned by Harlan: four marks on an oak bench

Start at the front corner piping, then run your eye along the ribs and down to the oak rail below.

1. **Front corner piping**: The self-piped edge follows the corner cleanly and keeps the box shape.
2. **Rust ribs**: Ribs run lengthwise, catching light along the whole bench.
3. **Bamboo lantern vase**: One natural object carries the same earthy tone as the cushion.
4. **Oak frame**: The cushion is about as tall as the side rail, so it never looks top-heavy on slim legs.

## Box, knife, rounded or angled: four edges for one bench

| Edge | How it looks | Where it earns its keep |
|---|---|---|
| Box edge | Straight sides, flat top, square corners | Benches and window seats where the cushion should look built in, like this one |
| Knife edge | Two panels sewn at the rim, thin at the edges | Chair pads and throw pillows, not a bench sat on every day |
| Rounded corners | The box shape with its corners eased | Benches in a walkway, where a square corner catches knees and bags |
| Angled corners | A corner cut on a slant | Frames or walls that are not square; draw it and measure first |

## Two paint colors, a pink fleck and two dog beds

A buyer got in touch with two heritage paint colors and a fabric in mind, a warm taupe woven with pink flecks. Before anything was cut, the workshop photographed two options from that fabric line right up against their paint.

The order was two bench cushions, 72 x 17⅜ in (1830 x 440 mm) and 48¼ x 18⅛ in (1225 x 460 mm), with about a week of production and 3–5 days for delivery. Two dog beds were added in a pet fabric. When that pet fabric line was discontinued, the workshop substituted a very similar pet-suitable one and sent a real-life photo of it before shipping.

They came back later for two more: 24¼ x 77⅞ in (61.5 x 197.8 cm) at 4 in (10 cm) thick, and 17⅛ x 43¼ in (43.5 x 110 cm) at 2 in (5 cm). Two thicknesses in one house, each matched to its own frame.

Ask for your fabric to be photographed next to your paint or furniture before you commit. The [paint and wallpaper matching pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/match-cushion-to-sofa-paint-wallpaper/) shows how, and [box edge versus knife edge](https://cushionguide.com/guides/box-edge-vs-knife-edge-cushion/) settles the edge.

## Measurement table: the rust entry bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Entryway bench cushion |
| Fabric | Corduroy in rust, ribs running lengthwise |
| Edge | Box edge, about as tall as the side rail |
| Piping | Self piping in the same rust |
| Corners | Square, turned clean by the welt |
| Frame | Light oak bench on slim legs |
| Surroundings | White porcelain tile, cream wall |
| Prop | One bamboo lantern vase with bare twigs |
| Use | Indoors; corduroy is not an outdoor fabric |

## Buyer questions: corners, a long window seat and the porch question

**A common question:** My bench turns a corner. Should the cushion be one piece or two?

**The workshop's answer:** Two pieces, made from your drawing: for example 17¾ x 59 in (45 x 150 cm) and 17¾ x 35½ in (45 x 90 cm), each cut to the exact drawn size. Where two long cushions meet and overlap in the corner, each can have its own backrest.

**A common question:** Can you make a 74 x 18 in window seat cushion, and is the price open to haggling?

**The workshop's answer:** The size is no trouble: a 74 x 18 in (188 x 46 cm) beige cushion and a 78¾ x 21¼ in (200 x 54 cm) one were both quoted. A counter-offer well under the quote was politely declined because the shop uses top-quality fabric and filling; installments are available instead.

**A common question:** Can the fabric on the bench cushion with bolsters go outdoors?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The indoor bench-with-bolster fabrics aren't made for outdoor use. There is a separate outdoor bench cushion line in weatherproof, UV-resistant fabrics, made in custom sizes and shapes.

> An entryway bench cushion should stand about as tall as the bench's side rail; any thicker and a slim oak bench starts to look top-heavy.

> **Tailor's margin:** Have the fabric photographed beside your paint before you commit. A rust or a pink fleck changes its mind next to a wall.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I choose the thickness of a cushion for a slim oak bench?

Let the frame decide. On a slim oak bench, a box cushion about as tall as the side rail looks right; much thicker and it sits like a hat. One house used two thicknesses, 4 in and 2 in, each matched to its own bench.

### Should corduroy ribs run along the bench or across it?

Lengthwise along the bench, as here. The ribs then catch light down the whole length, and the nap is brushed the same way each time someone slides along. Put the direction in your order note if it matters to you.

### Are rounded corners better on a mudroom bench cushion?

They help where people pass close by, because a soft corner does not catch bags or knees. On a bench set into a corner or against a wall, square box corners look tidier and fill the frame better.
