# A rust corduroy mudroom bench cushion, and the buyer project behind it

*Maggie reads a blue entryway where one warm cushion does all the work, then retells a buyer's thin notched pad, from the first question to the finished drawing.*

> **The quick answer:** For a cool-painted mudroom, choose a bench cushion from the opposite side of the color wheel, such as rust corduroy against blue walls, and run it the full length of the lid, flush at the front. Corduroy's ribbed pile hides the creases of a seat used for pulling on boots, and a removable cover handles damp jeans.

The ribbed pile hides the creases of a seat used for pulling on boots.")

## Pinned by Maggie in the blue hallway

Five pins, from the rust seat and the shaker chest to the coat hooks, the boot tray and the washable blue rug.

1. **Rust corduroy cushion**: Orange sits opposite blue on the color wheel, so this seat finishes a cool hallway.
2. **Shaker panel chest**: The cushion runs the full lid length and stops flush at the front.
3. **Coats on hooks**: Hang hooks high enough that coat hems clear the cushion top.
4. **Boot tray**: Wet shoes live on a tray, not under the seat fabric.
5. **Blue washable rug**: The rug keeps the blue family going so the rust stays the only warm note.

## Why one rust cushion finishes a cold blue hall

The coats come in wet and the cushion stays rust. That is the whole trick of this entryway, and it took me years of re-covering window seats in drafty old houses to trust it.

Everything here belongs to one cool family: denim-blue walls, a gray shaker-panel chest, a dusty blue rug, a white-framed window onto the street. Then a single [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) cushion in burnt terracotta goes on the lid. Orange sits opposite blue on the color wheel, so the eye lands there first and the hall reads as finished rather than chilly.

The proportion is honest. The cushion runs the full length of the lid and stops flush at the front, with a self-piped box edge holding the line. Nothing hangs over, so the lid still lifts without catching a coat sleeve; [storage bench cushions on a hinged lid](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) explains why that matters.

Every prop earns its hook. The coats hang high enough that their hems clear the cushion top. Wet shoes live on a boot tray, never under the seat fabric. The mirror and the floating gray drawer shelf with its small plant stay cool, so the rust remains the only warm note, and the rug carries the blue down to the floor for the same reason. What color is your hallway, dear?

## The buyer who came back for a thin, notched pad

One buyer wrote in after receiving a first velvet bench pillow, about 12 x 75 in (30 x 190 cm), and loving it. The second bench was trickier. It had square wooden legs standing at each corner, and they wanted a thin pad, about 1 1/4 in (3 cm), notched around those legs, with ties so it would not slip.

The question was simple; the choices were not. A notched pad is not a rectangle, so the workshop pointed them to the custom-shape route, which asks for a drawing with exact measurements. Every leg cut-out went on that drawing, and so did every tie: where it sits and how long it hangs. Ties are an add-on, priced separately.

The result is a cushion built from a sheet of paper instead of a guess. I once made the opposite mistake, early on, trusting a phone call over a sketch. Never again. [Notched cushion cut-outs](https://cushionguide.com/guides/notched-cushion-cutouts-posts-casings/) and [ties and non-slip bases](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) walk through both halves of that order.

## Three choices this entryway made, in order

1. **Color from across the wheel**: With blue walls, a rust or burnt terracotta cushion does the warming. Keep the chest, rug and shelf in the wall's family so the seat stays the one warm note.
2. **A ribbed pile for a working seat**: People sit here in coats and damp jeans. Corduroy's ribs hide creases, and a cover that comes off for cleaning matters more here than in any other room.
3. **Full lid, flush front**: Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have. Run the cushion the full length of the lid and stop it at the front edge. The [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/) takes those numbers, and more halls like this live in [mudroom and entryway bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/) and the wider [bench cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/).

## Buyer questions: fabric changes, inner covers and matching old corduroy

**A common question:** What happens if the fabric I picked is discontinued after I order?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop contacts you straight away, explains what happened and sends alternative color charts; for one buyer those were pet-friendly charts. You pick a new fabric code, the order is updated and production starts.

**A common question:** If I unzip the cover and take it off, is there an inner cover holding the filling in?

**The workshop's answer:** An inner cover can be made if you want one. With a foam insert it isn't needed, so the workshop adds its own protective layer around the foam instead.

**A common question:** I bought a green corduroy ottoman from another seller. Can you match that color?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop can suggest its closest shade, such as its green corduroy, but can't guarantee a match to another maker's fabric. Ask for the full color card to choose another color, or order samples first.

> **Tailor's margin:** For a notched bench pad with ties, mark every leg cut-out, and each tie's position and length, on the drawing first.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is corduroy a practical fabric for a mudroom bench cushion?

It suits a seat people use in coats and damp jeans. The ribbed pile hides creases between cleanings, and a removable cover can go in the wash after a muddy week. Pick a warm color if your walls are cool.

### How long should a storage bench cushion be?

Run it the full length of the lid and stop it flush at the front edge. Nothing should hang over, so the lid lifts without snagging on coats and the cushion stays put when you open it.

### Where should wet boots go if the entry bench has a cushion?

On a boot tray beside or in front of the bench, never tucked under the seat fabric. Keeping wet shoes off the cushion is the simplest way to help a corduroy cover last through a snowy winter.

### What cushion color works with blue entryway walls?

Look across the color wheel: rust, terracotta or burnt orange. Keep the chest, rug and shelves in the blue and gray family so the cushion is the one warm note and the hall looks finished.
