# Red ticking on a farmhouse bench: a custom bench cushion for lingering

*A kitchen bench gets sat on longer than any sofa in the house: breakfast, homework, the second cup. I read this one for staying power.*

> **The quick answer:** For long sitting at a kitchen table, a dining bench cushion should be slim and firm enough to keep your elbows at table height, with ties or a non-slip base so it stays put. Seats use firm 32-density foam; add a softer back cushion filled with shredded foam or fiber, which ends up about 4 to 6 in thick.

## Why the ticking is slim, and why that is comfortable

The best seat in a farmhouse kitchen is the one nobody wants to leave. This one has earned it.

A cream painted bench, a scrubbed pine table, and a red and white [ticking](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#ticking) cushion cut exactly to the bench top. Note the thickness, or rather the lack of it. The cushion is kept fairly slim so the seat stays at table height. Pile on a plush cushion and you sit too high; by the second cup your forearms are resting on the table edge. I learned that one years ago on a cushion that looked lovely and sat like a booster seat. Work out your own numbers with the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) and [banquette cushion thickness and table height](https://cushionguide.com/guides/banquette-cushion-thickness-table-height/).

Now the piping. A solid red welt around fine ticking. A narrow stripe can look busy at the edge; a solid line sharpens it, like a ruled margin on notepaper. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and this one runs true.

The props are working, too. Lemons in a white bowl and a jug of wildflowers bring yellow and white to the table, which keeps the red cheerful rather than heavy. The linen runner softens the pine. The cream Shaker cabinets with brass knobs match the bench base, so the red is the only color that moves. How long do people linger at your table?

One thing I would add: ties or a non-slip base. A freestanding cushion walks when people slide in and out, and in a kitchen they slide in and out all day. ## Pinned by Maggie: five notes in the margin

Five pins, from the red ticking top to the cream painted bench that matches the Shaker cabinets.

1. **Red ticking top**: Fine stripes along the length suit a long, narrow bench.
2. **Solid red piping**: A red welt outlines the stripe against the cream bench.
3. **Bowl of lemons**: Yellow keeps the red cheerful rather than heavy.
4. **Jug of wildflowers**: Country flowers suit the relaxed kitchen mood.
5. **Cream painted bench**: The painted base matches the Shaker cabinets.

## Checklist for a bench you sit on for an hour

- ✓ Firm seat: 32-density foam holds its shape through a long meal.
- ✓ Slim enough that elbows sit comfortably at the table edge.
- ✓ A softer back: shredded foam or fiber fill, about 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) once filled.
- ✓ For a back cushion, send only width and height.
- ✓ Ties or a non-slip base on any freestanding bench.
- ✓ A hidden zipper underneath, so the cover comes off for washing.

## A trapezoid drawing missing one letter

A buyer sent the workshop a drawing of a symmetrical trapezoid window seat: side B 14 5/8 in (37 cm), C 51 5/8 in (131 cm), D 42 7/8 in (109 cm), and a thin 2 3/8 in (6 cm) cushion with piping. They wanted the zipper on the short back edge, D, and confirmed both angled sides were identical.

Lovely drawing. One letter missing. The first version had no E, the depth from front to back, and without it nobody can cut anything. The workshop asked; it came back as 13 3/4 in (35 cm). Then the workshop asked for a photo of the space before production, a step I would never skip either.

Two lessons for comfort, dear. A seat that thin is for perching, not an afternoon with a novel, so decide how long you will sit before you choose thickness. And say where the zipper goes; on a seat against a wall, the back edge hides it. The lettering system is laid out in [trapezoid cushion measurements](https://cushionguide.com/guides/trapezoid-cushion-measurements/).

## Buyer questions: backs, zippers and a bench with a cutout

**A common question:** Is the back cushion made with the same foam as the seat, and how thick does it come out?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The seat uses firm 32-density foam, while back cushions are filled with shredded foam or fiber so they are softer to lean on. Being filled pillows, they have no fixed thickness and end up about 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm), so you only give width and height.

**A common question:** Can I take the cover off to clean it, and where does the zipper sit?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Covers have a hidden zipper and come off easily. On bench cushions it runs in an L along one long side and one short side, on the underside.

**A common question:** My bench has a cutout. Can you make a cushion from my own sketch?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Cutouts and sketched shapes go through the trapezoid and custom-shape listing: pick the size range by your longest and deepest measurements, upload your drawing with every measurement when the listing asks, and write your fabric code in the personalization. The cushion is made exactly to the sketch.

> **Tailor's margin:** Freestanding kitchen bench? Add ties or a non-slip base to the cushion. People slide in and out all day, and an untied cushion walks.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a dining bench cushion be for a kitchen table?

Thin enough that your seat stays at table height. Work from the bench height and the table height rather than how plush the cushion looks; a slim, firm cushion keeps elbows comfortable through a long meal.

### Does a ticking stripe suit a long, narrow bench?

Yes. Fine ticking suits a long, narrow bench, and a solid welt in one of the stripe colors, red here, sharpens the edge so the stripe does not look busy against a cream painted base.

### What makes a bench back cushion comfortable to lean on?

A softer fill than the seat. Back cushions filled with shredded foam or fiber give under your shoulders, while the seat below stays firm on 32-density foam. That pairing is what makes a kitchen bench feel closer to a sofa.
