# A custom bench cushion in red herringbone stripe, and how its color moves through the day

*Élodie reads a low, close photograph of a walnut bench and follows one red stripe from cool morning to warm lamplight, and then to your screen.*

> **The quick answer:** A red and cream striped bench cushion changes with the light: brighter and cooler in morning daylight, deeper and warmer under evening lamps, and often too vivid on a phone screen. Judge the fabric from a swatch in daylight at the bench itself. Then state the stripe direction against the cushion's long side and ask the workshop to confirm it.

![Low-angle close-up of a red and cream herringbone striped bench cushion showing its self-piped box corner](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/red-stripe-bench-cushion-piped-corner-low-angle-1600.webp "Taken at seat height, the frame shows a level top, an upright gusset and a crisp self-piped corner.")

## One red, three lights

Red is the most persuasive color in a room. It tells the truth at noon and something warmer by lamplight.

This custom bench cushion was photographed at seat height, looking along a walnut bench in a blush-pink room, and the light is warm and low. The red and cream stripes read deep, almost brick. In the morning, with cooler daylight coming in, the same red would look brighter and a touch more tomato, and the cream would turn whiter. At night, under a mushroom lamp and a woven globe pendant, the red leans toward oxblood and the cream goes buttery. The blush wall adds its own cast, bouncing pink into the cream stripes.

Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. Phones often push reds brighter than the woven cloth, so a stripe that looks cherry online can arrive deeper and quieter. The Pattern on [screen versus swatch](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) shows how to check.

Look closer and each stripe is a small herringbone twill, woven rather than printed, which gives the red a depth a printed stripe cannot. Self piping in the same cloth finishes the edge without adding a color. From this low angle you can also see why a long box cushion needs a firm core: the top stays level all the way to the book at the far end, and the gusset stands straight.

## The swatch strip, in warm low light

- Herringbone red — #A8322D — Deep and warm here; brighter and more tomato in morning light.
- Stripe cream — #EFE3CC — Picks up a pink cast from the blush wall.
- Walnut rail — #5A3B26 — Dark wood under the cushion frames the red.
- Blush wall — #E7C3BC — A soft reflector that warms everything near it.
- Monstera green — #2F5D3A — Red's complement, kept to a few leaves.
- Rug mustard — #D6A93A — The yellow and gray rug keeps the red from going heavy.

## Pinned by Élodie

Five pins at seat height, from the piped corner in front to the book waiting at the far end.

1. **Piped box corner**: A firm core keeps the corner square and the gusset upright.
2. **Herringbone twill**: Each stripe shows a woven herringbone, giving depth a printed stripe cannot.
3. **Self piping**: Piping in the same stripe finishes the edge without adding a new color.
4. **Walnut bench rail**: The cushion sits exactly on the frame's outer edge.
5. **Book at far end**: Seen at seat height, the flat top runs level all the way to the book.

## The stripes that ran the wrong way

A buyer wrote in after a striped cover arrived with the stripes running the long way. They had asked for the short way. The workshop apologized and remade the cover only, so the buyer kept the insert. That remake took one to two weeks, from fabric sourcing and sewing to delivery.

Stripes are the one pattern where a single phrase in the note changes everything. Write the direction against the cushion's long side, 'stripes run across the depth' or 'stripes run along the length', and ask for a confirmation before cutting. For the geometry behind it, see [stripe direction and roll width](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/).

## Buyer questions: piping, tiny sizes and an L-shaped bench

**A common question:** Is piping extra, and can I pick a different color for it?

**The workshop's answer:** Piping is included at no extra charge, and so is a contrast color; the price is the same with or without it. Write the piping code in the personalization box. If you leave it blank, the shop checks with you before production, usually assuming matching piping.

**A common question:** I need a cushion smaller than your smallest size. Can I still order it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The size options are only for pricing. Pick the closest range, for example the 10 to 16 in option for an 8.5 in wide cushion, and write your exact size in Add Personalization. The price can't go below the smallest range, but the cushion is made to the size you write.

**A common question:** How do I size two cushions for an L-shaped bench so they don't overlap in the corner?

**The workshop's answer:** One cushion runs all the way into the corner; the other is shortened by the seat depth. For an L bench of 68 1/2 x 53 1/8 in (174 x 135 cm) with a 17 3/4 in (45 cm) depth, cushion one was 53 1/8 x 17 3/4 in (135 x 45 cm) into the corner and cushion two was 50 3/4 x 17 3/4 in (129 x 45 cm).

## Cut sheet: the red herringbone stripe

| Fabric | Red and cream herringbone twill stripe, code N37 |
| Piping | Self piping in the same stripe |
| Core | Firm, keeping the top level and the gusset upright |
| Fit | Sits exactly on the frame's outer edge |
| Stripe check | Ask how the stripes fall at the corners before cutting |
| Light | Warm and low in the photo; judge swatches in daylight |
| Best for | Living room and dining benches |

> If a red stripe looks cherry on your phone, expect a deeper, quieter red in the cloth; judge the swatch at the bench in daylight.

> **Tailor's margin:** Before a striped cover is cut, write the stripe direction against the cushion's long side and ask the workshop to confirm it.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does my cushion look different in the evening?

Warm lamplight shifts reds deeper and turns creams buttery, while morning daylight is cooler and makes the same colors brighter and whiter. Colored walls add their own cast, so a blush wall can warm a cream stripe noticeably.

### Is a woven stripe better than a printed one?

A woven stripe, such as a herringbone twill, has texture inside each band, which gives the color depth and changes softly as light moves across it. A printed stripe sits on the surface and reads flatter up close.

### How do I check a red fabric before ordering?

Order a swatch and look at it at the bench, at the times you actually sit there, beside your walls and wood. Compare it with the photo on your screen; if they disagree, trust the daylight.

### Can a remade cover fit my existing insert?

Yes. When a striped cover came with the stripes the wrong way, the workshop remade only the cover and the buyer kept the insert. That remake took one to two weeks, from fabric sourcing to delivery.
