# A red gingham corner floor cushion against blue-gray walls, month by month

*Red checks and cool paint have kept each other honest in country kitchens for generations. This corner shows why, and how it will look in January and again in July.*

> **The quick answer:** A red gingham corner floor cushion stays cheerful all year against blue-gray walls, because the cool paint calms the red and the red warms the paint. Order any backrest together with the seat so both come from one dye lot, and pair the check with a larger-scale stripe rather than a second check.

![Red and white gingham corner floor pouf with backrest pillows on blue-gray walls beside a glass cabinet and brass mirror](https://cushionguide.com/media/corner-floor-cushions/red-gingham-corner-floor-seat-blue-gray-walls-1600.webp "Classic red checks against blue-gray paint, with a brass mirror, a glass cabinet and a striped rug.")

## What the corner says in cool daylight

A square corner, a box-edged seat in red and white gingham, self piping so the checks run right to the edge without a contrasting line. Two gingham pillows lean into the corner at an angle, and that angle is the comfort: you sit back into the join of the walls instead of against one flat wall.

The walls are blue-gray, and they do the quiet work. A cool color beside red keeps the red from shouting; red beside a cool color keeps the room from going cold. Behind glass, a cabinet of blue and white china ties the checks back to the paint. A round brass mirror adds a third color, a warm metal one, and throws light into the corner. Underfoot, a black and white striped rug brings in a second pattern at a bigger scale. A leafy ficus in a white pot and a black tray table finish the picture.

Gingham is a plain cloth with an honest face. It never pretends to be anything but glad to see you. More seats like it live under [corner floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/), and the cloth itself under [checked linen and gingham](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/checked-linen-and-gingham/).

## Where the colors trade favors

Five places in the photograph where one color does a kindness for another.

1. **Red gingham seat**: The cool wall calms the red, and the red warms the wall.
2. **Angled backrest pillow**: Pillows angled into the corner give a comfortable reclined position.
3. **Brass round mirror**: A warm metal frame adds a third color and bounces light into the corner.
4. **Glass cabinet of china**: Blue and white china behind glass ties the red check back to the blue walls.
5. **Striped rug**: A larger-scale stripe underfoot is a safer partner for a check than another check.

## Twelve months in one corner

**January.** Low sun and short days. The red check is the warmest thing in the room, and the brass mirror catches what little light there is. This is the season the corner earns its keep.

**April.** Windows cracked open, light turning whiter. The blue-gray wall starts to lead, and the red reads crisper, more picnic than fireside.

**July.** Long, bright days. Gingham in strong light looks clean rather than heavy, and the striped rug keeps the floor from feeling busy.

**October.** Evenings come back early. Lamps go on sooner, the blue-gray deepens, and the red warms up again.

The cushion never changes; the room turns around it. Buy the cushion once, cry once: choose a color that still works in the worst light of the year, and the other eleven months take care of themselves. What does your corner look like at four o'clock in January, my friend? For floor seating near where people eat, see [kitchen nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kitchen-nook-cushions/).

## A square corner with one backrest

A buyer got in touch about a square corner floor cushion, 38 1/4 × 38 1/4 in (97 × 97 cm), with a backrest on only one side. What mattered most to them was that everything matched, fabric and color both.

So the workshop specified a single backrest at 38 1/4 × 15 3/4 × 4 in (97 × 40 × 10 cm) and made both pieces together in a deep sour-cherry red, on one payment. One order, one cutting, one dye lot. A seat and its backrest ought to grow old at the same pace.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Is there a discount if I order two or more floor cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Often, yes: one buyer got an extra discount for two identical cushions, and larger orders are quoted together; another buyer asked for a quote on eight 28 x 32 in (71 x 81 cm) floor cushions without backrests.

**A common question:** Can I make my floor sofa longer with an ottoman and another straight backrest? Will I need another bracket?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The add-on ottoman ships with a straight backrest and one metal bar to connect it, and every piece is sewn to match the main sofa. To extend a sofa you already own, place a standard order in the same color and write which extra backrests you need in the preferences box.

**A common question:** Tracking says my floor sofa was delivered, but it isn't here. What now?

**The workshop's answer:** Check the front door, the backyard, the neighbors and any parcel lockers, and compare with the carrier's delivery photo; multi-box orders often show some boxes still in transit. For parts that were never delivered, ask the workshop to confirm in writing what it will send. In one case where a correctly delivered order was stolen, the workshop offered a replacement at a fraction of the product cost.

> **Tailor's margin:** A gingham floor cushion pairs best with a striped rug at a bigger scale, not a second check; two checks of one size fight.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a corner floor cushion need a backrest on both walls?

No. A backrest can run along one wall only. One square corner seat of 38 1/4 in (97 cm) took a single backrest of 38 1/4 × 15 3/4 × 4 in (97 × 40 × 10 cm), made in the same red, at the same time, as the seat.

### Why pair gingham with a striped rug instead of another check?

Two checks of a similar size compete for the eye. A stripe at a larger scale gives the room a second pattern that doesn't argue with the first, the way the black and white rug sits under this red gingham seat.

### Will red gingham feel too heavy in summer?

Not against cool walls. In strong summer light gingham reads clean and crisp, and blue-gray paint calms the red. For a softer summer look, the same corner shape works in dusty rose or beige gingham, as the gallery shows.
