# A raspberry-ended modular floor sofa for a small room that hosts

*Low seating hosts well when every guest can reach a mug. This corner solved that with a stack of magazines.*

> **The quick answer:** A modular floor sofa hosts best in a small room with a straight backrest, not an L, so the pieces can move when guests arrive. Pull the accent color from something already in the room, as these raspberry ends pick up the faded rug, and keep a low surface for mugs within reach of every seat.

![Cream velvet floor sofa with raspberry ends on a faded patterned rug, with trailing pothos, framed prints and magazines](https://cushionguide.com/media/modular-floor-sofas/raspberry-velvet-floor-sofa-patterned-rug-pothos-1600.webp "A casual everyday corner: trailing pothos, a stack of magazines and a mug beside a raspberry-edged sofa.")

## Reading the corner, then hosting in it

A cream [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) floor sofa with raspberry ends sits in the corner of a beige room. No piping, only a clean box edge, so the two colors meet at the seams and nowhere else.

The raspberry has reasons. The faded patterned rug carries old pinks, and so do the small framed prints by the window. A color pulled from what is already in the room looks settled on the first day.

The pothos trails from a small wall shelf and fills the height a low sofa leaves empty. The tall plant at the edge of the frame does the same from the floor up. Soft overcast light keeps the velvet's sheen quiet.

Floor seating fails guests in one small way: there is nowhere to put a cup. Here a stack of magazines and a stoneware mug make a side table at the right height. It costs nothing and moves anywhere. Where do your guests put their cups?

The bolster sits near the open end, leaving a corner to curl into. A [modular floor sofa](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/) is at its best when the pieces can be pulled apart for guests: one seat to the rug, one to the window, the backrest leaning on the wall. The [small-apartment layouts](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/small-apartment-floor-sofa-layouts/) show a few arrangements.

Leave a hand's width of floor between the pieces when you split them. People step between, not over.

## Five things a guest would notice

Or use, which is better.

1. **Trailing pothos**: The plant fills the wall height a low sofa does not reach.
2. **Small framed prints**: Pink tones in the prints give the raspberry a reason to be there.
3. **Magazine stack and mug**: A pile of magazines makes a cheap, low side table.
4. **Raspberry-capped bolster**: The bolster sits near the open end, leaving a corner to curl up in.
5. **Raspberry base end**: The end color picks up the faded pinks in the rug.

## The corner's five colors

- Cream velvet — #EDE4D6 — The body. Light, so a low sofa does not sink the room.
- Raspberry — #A8385A — The ends, borrowed from the rug and the prints.
- Faded rose — #B98A80 — The rug's old pinks, the reason for the raspberry.
- Beige wall — #C4BAAB — A warm neutral that lets both velvets read.
- Pothos green — #5F7A3C — The one cool note, high on the wall.

## A 72 in wall and a toddler

A buyer in the US wanted two modular ottomans side by side along a 72 in (183 cm) wall in a small weekend apartment. The workshop suggested one full 35½ × 35½ in (90 × 90 cm) ottoman and a second one cut to suit the wall.

It also advised a straight backrest instead of an L, which keeps the pieces free to move. A table armrest and a separate skinny armrest were declined, since both would have been new designs. With a toddler at home, the workshop recommended a water-repellent outdoor fabric and offered samples, which come in sets of five.

## Three questions about floor cushions

**A common question:** Does the tufted linen floor cushion have a zipper? How do I keep it clean?

**The workshop's answer:** No zipper. The cushion is tufted and handmade, so the cover does not come off. Clean it by wiping gently with mild soap and water.

**A common question:** How big are the floor cushions in your photos?

**The workshop's answer:** The cushions standing against the wall are 28 × 56 in (71 × 142 cm), and the round tufted cushion is 24 in (61 cm) across. Any other size can be made to order.

**A common question:** The custom quote came in higher than the price in my cart. Why?

**The workshop's answer:** The cart was still showing a sale that had just ended. The shop switched the sale back on and made a custom order link at that price for a 20 × 48 in (51 × 122 cm) set, with extra seat cushions available to lengthen it.

> **Tailor's margin:** If guests sit on the floor, give every two of them one low surface for a mug. A stack of magazines will do.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why use two velvet colors on one floor sofa?

A second color on the ends frames the sofa and ties it to the room. Pick it from something already there, a rug or a print, so it looks settled rather than added.

### Straight backrest or L-shaped backrest for a small room?

Straight. It lets each piece move on its own when guests arrive or the room changes. An L suits a fixed corner that will always be used the same way.

### How do I size a floor sofa for one wall?

Measure the wall end to end, then take off room for anything beside the sofa, such as a plant or a side table. Send that number, and the pieces can be sized or cut to suit.
