# A raspberry bolster pillow on a greige daybed, read by morning light

*I keep a notebook for colors that behave one way at breakfast and another at supper. This raspberry earned two pages.*

> **The quick answer:** A bold bolster pillow sits calmly on a neutral daybed when the color comes in a flecked or slub weave instead of a flat solid. The gray flecks in this raspberry weave match the greige seat's undertone. Judge the color by a window in daylight, morning and evening, because a phone screen flattens the flecks and brightens the pink.

## Notebook, page one: the raspberry at seven in the morning

A bolster pillow in a strong pink ought to look sugary on a greige daybed. This one doesn't, and the reason is in the yarn.

The photograph is taken at seat height, so the end circle is the hero. Look close and the raspberry is a slub weave, shot through with gray flecks. Those flecks match the gray undertone of the greige linen seat below, and that is what ties a bold pillow to a quiet cushion. The piping is cut from the same cloth, holding a clean round at the end cap without a hard contrasting line. A seam is a promise, and a self-piped round keeps it quietly.

The back cushion sits blurred behind, a soft neutral wall. The white end post frames the corner. Nothing else is invited, and nothing else is needed.

Morning light here is hushed and cool, and it shows the flecks plainly. In the evening a warm lamp pushes the pink toward red and the flecks soften. Neither is wrong, my friend. You only have to know which hour you'll sit there most.

The cloth lives under [linen-look fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/), more rounds under [bolster pillows](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bolster-pillows/), and the daybed itself under [daybed cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/daybed-cushions/). The long argument about screens is in [cushion color on screen vs daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/). When do you sit on yours, at breakfast or after supper?

## Pinned by Harlan: five notes at seat height

Five pins, from the heathered end cap to the blurred back cushion behind it.

1. **Heathered end cap**: The flat end shows the slub weave best, with gray flecks running through the pink.
2. **Self piping seam**: Piping cut from the same cloth keeps a perfect round without a hard contrasting line.
3. **Slub weave body**: Mixed yarns soften a strong color so it sits comfortably on neutral upholstery.
4. **Greige linen seat**: The seat's gray undertone matches the flecks in the bolster, tying the two together.
5. **Blurred back cushion**: Shallow focus turns the back cushion into a calm neutral wall behind the pink.

## Light log: one raspberry, four kinds of light

| Light | What the pink does | What the gray flecks do |
|---|---|---|
| Morning window light | Reads cool and berry-toned | Show plainly and echo the greige seat |
| Midday daylight | Closest to the true cloth | Visible at arm's length |
| Evening lamplight | Warms toward red | Soften into the pink |
| Phone screen | Often brighter and flatter | Can vanish, so the cloth looks like a solid |

## Notebook, page two: a bay cover for foam already in hand

A buyer got in touch with foam already cut, 4 in (10 cm) thick, for a single trapezoid bay-window cushion. What was wanted was a zippered box cover with self piping, in a soft peach or coral outdoor-type fabric.

The measurements came in like a good notebook page: front 95 in (241 cm), back against the wall 50 in (127 cm), depth 23 in (58 cm), and the two angled sides 32 1/2 in (82.5 cm) and 32 in (81 cm). Half an inch apart. Older bays settle and their sides rarely agree, so each one gets its own pull of the tape. The workshop gave a turnaround of 10 to 14 days at most.

Peach and coral are two colors I'd look at twice, once at breakfast and once at supper, before committing. The [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) checks the sides, and [cushion covers for existing foam](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/) covers the rest.

## Buyer questions: covers, fire rules and second thoughts

**A common question:** Can I order just the covers, without any filling?

**The workshop's answer:** Tufted cushions only come filled, because the tufting goes through the filling. Untufted covers can be made on their own in your sizes; one set of three measured 27 1/2 x 17 3/4 x 5 1/2 in, 73 1/4 x 26 x 5 1/2 in and 73 1/4 x 12 1/4 x 5 1/2 in (70 x 45 x 14, 186 x 66 x 14 and 186 x 31 x 14 cm).

**A common question:** Is the foam or the fabric fire retardant?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The workshop does not offer fire-retardant foam or fabric. One buyer who needed it ordered velvet covers only and sourced fire-retardant filling locally.

**A common question:** The color isn't what I hoped now that it's here. Can I get new covers?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop makes new covers in a different fabric if you pay the shipping fee, and two covers together cost less each than one on its own.

> **Tailor's margin:** Hold the swatch by a window at breakfast, then again at supper. A phone screen hides the gray flecks.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does cushion fabric look brighter on my phone than on the daybed?

Screens push color and flatten texture, so a flecked weave can look like a bright solid. Judge the swatch by a window in daylight, then again under the lamp you use at night.

### Can self piping hold a clean round on a bolster end?

Yes. A welt cut from the same cloth outlines the end circle and keeps its shape without a contrasting line, which suits a strong color that is already doing the talking.

### What bolster color works on a greige daybed?

Almost any bold color, if it comes in a heathered or flecked weave whose gray matches the greige undertone. A flat solid in the same pink would sit on the seat instead of belonging to it.

### Do I measure both angled sides of a bay cushion?

Yes, each one on its own, corner to corner. In one bay the sides were 32 1/2 in and 32 in (82.5 and 81 cm), close enough to fool the eye and far enough apart to wrinkle a cover.
