# Custom cushion covers in three tweeds, read for a house full of guests

*Three box cushions, one weave, three moods. Stacked on a pale floor, they show what a host needs to see first: the side of the cushion, where every guest looks as they walk in.*

> **The quick answer:** Custom cushion covers can be ordered on their own, made to the length, depth and thickness of the foam you already have. Zippered covers come off and machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle. For guest seating, give the darkest colorway to the busiest seat and judge every color on its boxed side, which is what people see as they walk in.

![Three stacked box cushions in raspberry, mustard-gray and green-navy nubby weave on a pale floor against a white wall](https://cushionguide.com/media/cushion-covers/raspberry-mustard-green-tweed-cushion-covers-stacked-1600.webp "Three colorways of the same nubby weave, stacked to compare. Each is a two-tone yarn mix that reads as one soft color from a distance.")

## Three colorways, one weave, one honest light

Three box cushions, stacked like layers of a cake, on a pale wood floor against a white wall. Nothing else in the frame, and nothing else needed. The light is soft studio daylight, the kind that tells the truth about a color.

Look closely and none of these is one color. The top cushion is a raspberry spun from rose and plum yarns, warm enough to sit beside walnut or cherry. The middle is mustard cut with dove gray, a lively neutral for a gray room or an oak one. The base is bottle green shot through with navy, the deepest of the three. From across a room each reads as one soft shade; up close, it is a conversation of yarns.

The order is not an accident. Warm on top, dark at the bottom, and the stack looks settled, like a table set before the doorbell rings. There is no piping. The boxed corners are square and stay sharp even with two cushions pressing down on them.

## Pinned by Élodie: three yarn mixes and a corner

Four pins down the stack, from the raspberry on top to the square box corner.

1. **Raspberry colorway**: Rose and plum yarns mix into a warm raspberry that suits walnut and cherry wood.
2. **Mustard and gray**: Yellow and gray yarns give a lively neutral that works in gray or oak rooms.
3. **Green and navy**: The darkest option, forest green with navy, hides wear best on a family bench.
4. **Square box corner**: Each cover has a straight boxed side, so the corners stay sharp even when stacked.

## Seating a crowd starts at the side band

The eye sits down first, my friends, and at a party it sits down on the side of the cushion. Guests come in, look across the room, and what they see is the boxed band, not the top. That is why this photograph shows the sides. A nubby weave shows its texture best there.

For a gathering, give each color a job. The seat that takes the most traffic, the bench by the door or the long banquette, gets the green and navy, because a deep two-tone hides wear. The raspberry goes where the evening lamp lands. The mustard bridges the two.

If the foam on your spare seats is still good, you only need new [custom cushion covers](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/cushion-covers/) cut to the foam you have. The [covers-only measuring pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/) walks through it, and this nubby texture has cousins among our [woven jacquards](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/). Which seat in your house fills up first when people arrive?

## The floor sofa that became a guest bed

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about the pink floor sofa they already owned. They wanted a spare cover so the sofa could double as a guest bed, and they asked whether a standard Twin XL mattress would slip inside it.

The numbers were close. Each cushion on that sofa is 39 x 79 in (99 x 201 cm), nearly the footprint of a [Twin XL](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#twin-xl). The buyer, measuring with care, found the catch: their cushion is about 6.5 in (16.5 cm) thick, and a Twin XL starts around 8 in (20 cm). A cover cut for one is wrong for the other. They ordered one long cover in pink corduroy, cut to the cushion's own size, and the guest bed was ready.

Footprint is half the question. Thickness is the other half.

> A custom cushion cover has to match footprint and thickness: a 6.5 in thick cushion and an 8 in Twin XL mattress cannot share one cover.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can I order only the cover and keep the foam I already have?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Zippered covers alone are ordered through the custom cushion-cover listing. Enter the length, depth and thickness of your foam and the cover is made to fit it snugly. The covers come off and machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle, and replacement covers for cushions you already own are made too.

**A common question:** How do I wash and dry zippered covers? Do they have to go in inside out?

**The workshop's answer:** Machine wash at or below 86°F (30°C). Turning them inside out is optional. If you use a dryer, choose the low setting. Covers with a rubberized non-slip base can shed particles in the machine, so air-dry those, shake them out and finish with a lint roller.

**A common question:** What diameter and length should round bolster arms be?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard bolster is 8 in (20 cm) across, and its length follows the seat depth, so a 21 in (53 cm) deep seat gets a 21 in bolster. They can be made shorter, or fuller, up to 10 in (25 cm) in diameter.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Box cushion covers, zippered, available as covers only |
| Fabric | Nubby two-tone weave |
| Colorways | Raspberry (rose and plum), mustard with gray, forest green with navy |
| Edge | Box edge with square corners |
| Piping | None |
| Sizing | Made to your foam's length x depth x thickness |
| Care | Machine wash at or below 86°F (30°C), delicate cycle; dryer on low only |
| Matching bolsters | 8 in (20 cm) diameter as standard, length set by seat depth |
| Best for | Spare seats, floor stacks, guest benches, floor sofas used as guest beds |

> **Tailor's margin:** Judge a cushion color on its side band as well as its top. The boxed side is what guests see first as they walk into the room.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do covers-only orders need the exact thickness of the foam?

Yes. Give the length, depth and thickness of the foam itself, not of the old cover. The new cover is cut to those three numbers, so a thickness guessed by eye leaves it baggy or tight.

### Which tweed colorway hides wear best on a busy bench?

The darkest mix, forest green with navy. A two-tone yarn blend reads as one deep color from across the room, so a family bench or hallway seat keeps looking fresh longer than a pale single tone.

### Can a standard mattress go inside a floor sofa cover?

Only when footprint and thickness both match. A 39 x 79 in (99 x 201 cm) cushion is close to Twin XL in footprint, but at about 6.5 in thick it is shallower than a Twin XL, which starts around 8 in.

### Why compare cushion colors in a stack?

Stacking puts every colorway at the same scale and in the same light, and it shows the boxed sides, where a woven texture reads most clearly. It is the fairest way to compare colors before ordering.
