# A raspberry daybed cushion and bolster, where the room brings the pattern

*Hana reads a low oak daybed against whitewashed brick. The textiles stay plain. The brick, the books and the floorboards do the patterning.*

> **The quick answer:** To mix patterns around a daybed cushion, let the room carry the pattern and keep the cushion plain. Here brick courses, book spines and pine floorboards supply grid and stripe, a raspberry cushion and matching bolster supply one solid color, and oatmeal and rust linen pillows add texture that steps the color back toward neutral.

Linen and rust pillows add depth.")

## Three patterns that were already in the room

There is no printed fabric in this photograph. There is still a great deal of pattern.

Look at the wall first. Whitewashed brick is a grid, course after course. The oak shelf above holds a row of book spines, which is a stripe in many colors. The wide pine floorboards are long lines running away from you. Three patterns, all built into the room.

So the textiles stay quiet. A raspberry mattress cushion with self piping sits on a low oak platform, and a matching bolster in the same fabric lies at the end as an armrest. One solid color, repeated. The piping runs the full front edge, so that long line stays straight. The round end of the bolster is piped too, which gives it a clean face.

Texture is the third voice. An oatmeal linen pillow and a rust linen pillow step the raspberry back toward the neutrals of the brick and pine. A brass arc lamp leans over the seat, and brass beside raspberry reads rich rather than loud. A wooden stool holds an open book and a mug. The purpose is clear. This is for reading.

The frame is low. Height is a feeling, and here it feels unhurried.

The cloth is in [performance and pet-friendly fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/). Where does the pattern in your room already live?

Brick is the pattern.
Linen is the texture.
Raspberry is the one thing you remember.

## Pinned by Hana at the brick wall

Five pins, from the piped round end of the bolster to the stool that keeps a cup within reach.

1. **Matching bolster**: A bolster in the same fabric acts as an armrest and keeps the daybed long and clean.
2. **Piped bolster end**: Piping around the round end gives the bolster a crisp, tailored face.
3. **Piped mattress edge**: Self piping runs the full length so the long front edge stays straight.
4. **Brass arc lamp**: Warm brass next to raspberry reads rich rather than loud.
5. **Stool side table**: A small stool at the end keeps a cup and a book within the reader's reach.

## One color, two neutrals, three surfaces

- Raspberry — #A8325A — Mattress cushion and bolster. The only solid color.
- Burgundy shadow — #6B1F36 — Where the weave turns at the piping. Same cloth, less light.
- Oatmeal linen — #D9CDB7 — Pillow. Steps the color toward the brick.
- Rust linen — #A5532F — Pillow. A warm middle between raspberry and pine.
- Whitewashed brick — #E8E3DA — The grid. Pattern without print.
- Brass — #B8923F — The lamp. Warm metal keeps raspberry rich.

## Two twin covers, no foam, and one clear sentence

A buyer in the US wanted corduroy covers only, no foam, for two twin daybed mattresses: 74 x 38 x 10 in (188 x 97 x 25 cm) and 74 x 38 x 8 in (188 x 97 x 20 cm).

The payment came in below the full cushion price, so the workshop first asked for the balance. Then it saw that only covers were wanted and canceled the extra charge. The two sizes went in as separate orders and shipped together.

Nothing went wrong. Something almost did. Write 'cover only, no foam' plainly in the note, and the price is right from the start. A [cover-only](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#cover-only) order has its own Pattern, [covers for foam you already own](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/).

## On the cutting table: the raspberry reading daybed

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Box-edge daybed mattress cushion on a low oak platform |
| Bolster | Matching raspberry, piped round end, used as an armrest |
| Fabric | Raspberry performance weave |
| Piping | Self piping along the full front edge |
| Pillows | Oatmeal linen and rust linen |
| Pattern | From the room: brick, book spines, floorboards |
| Ordering | Bolster with the mattress cushion, so fabric and piping match |
| Best for | Reading daybeds that also work as a sofa |

## Buyer questions: twin covers, stacked mattresses, a date to meet

**A common question:** Could you make a cover for my twin daybed mattress, and the back pillows as well?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One quote covered a 38 x 79 in (97 x 201 cm) twin mattress cover plus two stuffed L-shaped back pillows, about 20 in (51 cm) tall, running end to end.

**A common question:** Will the IKEA Hemnes daybed cover fit both mattresses when they're stacked?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, it wraps both. In personalization, write the mattress length and width, for example 31 1/2 x 78 3/4 in (80 x 200 cm), plus the combined height of the two stacked mattresses. Measure your own, because Hemnes mattress sizes vary from market to market, and give exact numbers with no added leeway; the fit allowance is built into the cutting.

**A common question:** Can you rush a daybed order so it arrives before a set date?

**The workshop's answer:** Often, yes. Ordered right away, it can go into production at the start of the week; ask for the shipping time in writing. In-stock fabric can start at once; fabric that has to be sourced adds a little time, and the best-selling velvet colors are almost always in stock. The workshop won't promise a date absolutely.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a covers-only daybed order, write 'cover only, no foam' in the note; one line prevents a price mix-up before cutting.

> Order the daybed bolster with the mattress cushion; cut from the same fabric at the same time, the cloth and the piping match exactly.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I mix pillows on a solid-color daybed?

Choose one strong solid for the mattress cushion and bolster, then add two linen pillows in neutrals that sit between that color and the walls. Here oatmeal and rust step raspberry back toward the whitewashed brick.

### What does a bolster do on a reading daybed?

It works as a firm armrest and keeps the long seat clean. A bolster in the same fabric as the mattress cushion, with piping around its round end, makes the daybed read as one finished piece of furniture.

### Is raspberry too bold for a reading nook daybed?

Not when the surroundings are pale and warm. Whitewashed brick, pale pine and brass let raspberry read rich rather than loud, and one solid color is calmer on the eye than several prints.

### Can a room with brick walls take a patterned cushion?

It can, but brick is already a pattern, and a full bookshelf adds another. When the room is busy, a plain cushion gives the eye a place to stop; save printed fabric for plainer walls.
