# A raspberry daybed cushion with a set-back bolster and a deep seat

*A bold color, a cool wall, and a seat deep enough to fold your legs under you. The bolster sits back so the seat can stay generous.*

> **The quick answer:** On a deep daybed, set the bolster back against the wall so the seat stays wide enough to sit cross-legged, and choose cushion thickness by the seat height it makes with the platform. Here a raspberry linen-look box cushion with self piping sits on a low oak platform, and the slate gray wall makes the berry color look richer.

## Pinned by Hana: berry, slate, oak

Five pins, read left to right, from the marble table to the charcoal throw.

1. **Raspberry bolster**: Running almost the full seat length, it sits back to leave a deep seat.
2. **Seat cushion**: Berry linen-look weave with self piping; the cool gray wall makes it look richer.
3. **Charcoal knit throw**: Ties the bold cushion back to the gray of the walls.
4. **Oak platform**: Pale wood keeps the raspberry-and-slate pairing from turning moody.
5. **Marble side table**: Marble and brass add a little shine beside the matte weave.

## Raspberry on slate, and a seat left open

Raspberry on slate gray. That is most of the room.

A cool wall makes a warm color look richer. So does north light, even and a little blue. The berry weave reads deep here, not loud.

The light oak platform keeps it from turning moody. Pale wood under a strong color lifts the piece off the herringbone floor.

The bolster runs almost the full length of the seat and sits back against the wall. It leaves a wide stretch of seat in front. Room to sit cross-legged with a book. That is the point of this [daybed cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/daybed-cushions/).

The charcoal knit throw ties the cushion to the wall color. The marble table on brass legs adds a small shine beside the matte [linen-look weave](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/). A stoneware vase. Two books. A faded gray rug. Nothing competes.

Self piping follows the box edge in the same raspberry. A color this sure does not need a second line.

Where do you sit on a daybed, at the front edge or back against the wall?

Height is a feeling.
Depth is a choice.
The bolster makes it.

## Setting depth and thickness, in order

1. **Measure the deck**: Take the platform's depth and length inside any rails. On a deep daybed, depth decides how the seat gets used.
2. **Add the platform to the cushion**: Platform height plus cushion thickness is the seat height. On a low base, a thicker cushion brings the seat up to an easy sit.
3. **Subtract the bolster**: A round bolster against the wall takes its own diameter off the seat. What remains is the real seat.
4. **Keep the front edge clear**: Set the bolster back, as here, and the front of the seat stays open for sitting cross-legged or stretching out.

## A seat 34.5 inches deep, in warm cream

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a deep daybed seat: 34.5 x 85 x 6 in (88 x 216 x 15 cm). Deep enough to lie across. Long enough for two people to sit apart.

They wanted to send us a block-print fabric of their own. The workshop suggested an easier road. We would find a similar look ourselves, so nothing had to travel to the workshop first.

They chose a warm creamy white with warm red piping. Then they asked about a saddle-brown leather welt. Stock leather colors cost nothing extra; a custom color costs a little more.

At 34.5 in deep, a 6 in cushion is a floor to live on. Check the resulting height with the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/), and read the Pattern on [daybed back cushions and bolsters](https://cushionguide.com/guides/daybed-back-cushions-sofa-look/) for a more upright sit.

## Buyer questions: a plain Hemnes cover, a full daybed set, matching Kallax bins

**A common question:** Can you make just a simple slipcover for an IKEA Hemnes daybed?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Choose the Cover Only option, which gives the slipcover alone, without the backrest and armrest pieces. Write the exact dimensions and fabric code in the personalization box.

**A common question:** Can you make a whole daybed set: mattress cover, back cushions and bolsters?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One set was a 76 x 36 x 6.5 in (193 x 91 x 17 cm) mattress cover, three 22 x 22 in (56 x 56 cm) back cushions and two 36 x 10 in (91 x 25 cm) bolsters, with pillow-style backs; the custom listing was updated when the sizes changed. Heavy pure linen or linen-cotton is possible too.

**A common question:** I want a cushion for an IKEA Kallax bench that matches my storage bins. How can I check the colors?

**The workshop's answer:** Order physical samples through the fabric-samples listing and write the codes in the note. To skip the wait for the mail, ask in the chat for close-up photos of those fabrics.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a low platform daybed, seat height is platform plus cushion. Check both numbers before choosing a 4 in or a 6 in cushion.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a bold daybed cushion work with gray walls?

Yes. A cool gray wall makes warm colors such as raspberry look richer. Keep the base and props neutral, as with the pale oak platform and charcoal throw here, so the cushion is the one bold note.

### How thick should a cushion be on a low platform daybed?

Work from seat height. Add the platform height to the cushion thickness and compare it with the height that feels right. One deep daybed seat was made 6 in (15 cm) thick at 34.5 in (88 cm) deep.

### Can the workshop find a fabric similar to one I already have?

Yes. Instead of mailing in a fabric, describe or photograph it and ask for a similar look. One buyer with a block print settled on a warm creamy white with warm red piping sourced by the workshop.

### Should the bolster match the daybed cushion?

Matching, as here, makes seat and back read as one piece of furniture and keeps a strong color calm. A contrasting bolster adds a second color, which works better when the seat itself is neutral.
