# A rainbow herringbone garden bench cushion on silvered teak, and how stripe, plain and texture share one bench

*Teak goes silver. Gravel stays gray. Somebody decided this bench needed every color at once, and they were right, because everything around it keeps quiet.*

> **The quick answer:** A multi-color stripe works on a garden bench when everything around it stays plain or textured: here an orange, teal and purple herringbone runs lengthwise on a custom box cushion, against silvered teak, pea gravel and one olive tree in terracotta. Let the stripe be the only pattern, and cut the cushion to fit inside the arms.

## Swatch strip: the loud one and its quiet company

- Orange — #E0703A — The warmest thread in the herringbone and the one that reads first from the lawn.
- Teal — #2F8A8C — Cools the orange and links the stripe to the green beyond.
- Purple — #6B4C8A — The surprise color; kept in small doses so it never turns sweet.
- Cream — #EFE7D6 — The ground between the bands that lets each color breathe.
- Silvered teak — #9A9690 — Weathered gray wood, the plain that makes the stripes stand out.
- Olive leaf — #7D8A5C — The calm green counterweight, living and matte.

## Pinned by Callum among the gravel

Five pins, from the lengthwise herringbone and square box end to the olive tree and gravel that keep the palette from crowding.

1. **Herringbone stripe top**: Lengthwise stripes turn the bench into one long line of color.
2. **Square box end**: The cushion is cut to sit snugly inside the arms.
3. **Olive in terracotta**: A calm green counterweight to the busy weave.
4. **Silvered teak back**: Weathered gray teak lets bright stripes stand out.
5. **Gravel ground**: Neutral gravel keeps the palette from getting crowded.

## One pattern, and everybody else stays plain

A teak garden bench has weathered to silver on pea gravel, beside an olive tree in a big terracotta pot. A stone wall with ivy behind, lawn and shrubs beyond. On the seat, a [garden bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) in a herringbone stripe of orange, teal, purple and cream.

Mixing patterns outdoors is simpler than folks fear. Pick one pattern and let the rest be plain or textured. The stripe is the pattern. The teak is the plain, gray and quiet. Gravel, ivy and olive leaves are the texture: they have grain and movement but no color fighting the bands. Add a second print and the whole corner starts talking over itself, like a dock full of radios on different stations.

Direction matters. The stripes run lengthwise, so the bench reads as one long band of color against the gravel. The cushion is a box cut to sit inside the arms, with square ends and [self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) that adds no extra color. It's [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), which it needs to be out here.

If your bench has arms, measure inside arm to inside arm at seat height, as laid out in [measuring a bench](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-bench-for-cushion/). A snug fit won't slide. What's the one loud thing your patio could carry?

## The long trapezoid that kept measuring short

A buyer messaged the workshop for a 2 3/4 in (7 cm) thick trapezoid: 51 1/2 in (131 cm) at the back, 85 3/4 in (218 cm) at the front, 26 in (66 cm) on the sides, in one fabric with matching piping.

It arrived measuring 83 3/4 in (213 cm) along the front. With the foam out, the foam was the correct 85 3/4 in; the cover was 83 in (211 cm), and getting it back on was a fight. The shop remade the cover. The buyer switched to a lighter color with pink piping, for a color-change fee, and asked for rounder corners, which foam that thin can't really hold.

The second cover still measured short, because a long, thin cushion bows. The shop gave a goodwill refund. On any long, thin piece, check foam and cover separately, and get every color or edge change confirmed in writing. The geometry lives in the [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/).

## Bench, piping and thickness questions

**A common question:** What does a custom bench cushion cost?

**The workshop's answer:** It's quoted by size, thickness and fabric, so the figure moves with your measurements. The workshop has quoted everything from a 10 1/4 x 37 1/2 in (26 x 95 cm) pad to 4 in (10 cm) thick pallet cushions of 55 x 31 1/2 in (140 x 80 cm), and a tufted 63 3/4 x 17 3/4 in (162 x 45 cm) bench cushion. Send length, depth and thickness for an exact quote.

**A common question:** Do you charge extra for piping?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Piping costs nothing extra, and the quote is the same with or without it. Write the piping color code in the personalization section.

**A common question:** How thick do you recommend my cushion should be?

**The workshop's answer:** About 4 in (10 cm) is standard. 3 in (about 7.5 cm) is the best seller and suits tight spots, such as a 15 in (38 cm) gap between a bench and a windowsill. For outdoor chair seats the shop suggests 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm), for curved benches 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm), and extra-tall pads up to 8 in (20 cm) are possible.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a bench with arms, measure inside arm to inside arm at seat height. A snug cushion won't slide, stripes or no stripes.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I mix a striped cushion with other patterns outdoors?

Let one stripe be the only printed pattern and keep the rest plain or textured, like weathered wood, gravel, stone and leaves. Texture adds interest without adding color, so a multi-color stripe stays the star instead of fighting a second print.

### Should stripes run lengthwise on a garden bench cushion?

On a long bench, lengthwise stripes turn the seat into one continuous band of color, a strong look against gravel or lawn. Say which direction you want in the order notes when you choose a striped fabric.

### Does a bright cushion suit a weathered teak bench?

Yes. Once teak turns silver-gray it behaves like a neutral, and a saturated stripe stands out cleanly against it. A pale cushion can look washed out on gray wood, so choose a color with some depth.

### Why would a long, thin trapezoid cushion measure short?

A long cushion only 2 3/4 in (7 cm) thick can bow, which pulls the front edge in when you measure it. Check the foam and the cover separately to see which one is actually short.
