# A plum window seat cushion in dotted chenille, read by hand

*A letter about a plum cushion in an oxblood library: how the cloth feels under your palm, how it holds up to a reader who never gets up, and how it comes clean.*

> **The quick answer:** A chenille window seat cushion feels soft and plush with a gentle sheen, which makes it a warm pick for a reading nook, though it can pill or snag where shoes and hands rub. The cover unzips and machine washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Keep chenille indoors, and wipe away window condensation before it soaks in.

## What my hand found first

Pull up a chair. I want to tell you about a cushion I would sit on until the candle burned down.

It is a plum [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) in a dotted chenille, rose threads flecked through the plum, laid on a walnut-paneled seat in a library painted oxblood. Run your hand across chenille and it feels like the skin of a peach: soft, plush, with a little sheen where the light rolls over it. That sheen is why the cushion glows here instead of sinking into the dark wall.

Look at the color first. The plum sits one step lighter than the oxblood wainscoting, close enough to belong and light enough to show. Then look at the edge. A champagne piping runs all the way around, like gilt lettering on a book spine, and it catches both the brass sconce and the candle. In a dark room a cushion can vanish; that pale line keeps its shape honest.

Every prop comes from the same century. The brass candlestick and the sconce repeat the champagne of the piping. The leather books on the sill and the glass of amber tea say somebody reads here for hours. The red and navy wool rug holds the floor and repeats the red that lives inside the plum.

Now the question my grandmother would ask: how does it wear? Chenille is soft because its yarn is built from short cut fibers, and short fibers can pill or snag where there is rubbing, at the front edge where heels swing and where a hand pushes up to stand. The workshop's upholstery fabrics are chosen to hold up to daily use, and it is still good sense to plan for that front edge. Which spot on your own window seat wears first?

## Pinned by Rosa: the brass and the plum

Five things in this library that make a dark room kind to a cushion.

1. **Plum dotted seat**: One step lighter than the oxblood walls, so it stays rich without disappearing.
2. **Champagne piping**: A pale metallic-toned cord catches candle and sconce light.
3. **Brass sconce**: Brass repeats in sconce, candlestick and the piping tone.
4. **Candlestick and tea**: Period props keep the scene scholarly rather than staged.
5. **Red and navy rug**: The rug anchors the dark room and repeats the plum's red base.

## Keeping chenille soft for years

1. **Unzip before you wash**: Every cover comes off. Wash it at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle or delicate cycle, then let it air dry.
2. **Blot small spills**: The upholstery fabrics wipe down for small spills. Blot rather than scrub, so the soft pile stays standing.
3. **Mind the glass**: Chenille is not waterproof. On a window that fogs, wipe the condensation away and keep the cushion off a wet sill.
4. **Choose the shade by lamplight too**: This dotted chenille runs 23 shades from cream to black. Look at your shortlist by day and again under the lamps you actually read by.

## The D-shaped seat, drawn as a rectangle and an arc

A buyer got in touch about a D-shaped window seat: two straight sides and an arched front. The seat measured about 67 in (170 cm) wide and 47 1/4 in (120 cm) deep, and the straight sides ran 20 1/2 in (52 cm) before the curve began.

What made the drawing easy to read was how the buyer described it: a rectangle about 64 1/2 x 21 in (164 x 53 cm), plus part of an arc cut from a circle 64 1/2 in (164 cm) across. Rectangle plus arc is geometry a tailor can draft without guessing. The workshop sent a quote, and when the buyer hesitated, it asked what budget they had in mind, to see what it could do.

If your curve has no neat circle behind it, the [chord and rise method](https://cushionguide.com/guides/curved-cushion-chord-rise-radius/) does the same job with two numbers.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** My angled window seat measurements don't seem to add up. What happens then?

**The workshop's answer:** Before cutting, the workshop draws every shaped cushion to scale. If the edges and the depth can't fit together, it flags the problem and asks you to re-measure and send a wide-angle photo of the whole seat, corner to corner. In one case the angled sides worked out to 34 in instead of 40 in, because a 30 and a 40 had been swapped. Nothing is made until you confirm.

**A common question:** Does piping cost extra, and can it be a different color from the cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Piping is included, and a contrasting color costs nothing more; just write the piping code in the personalization note. Single piping is standard and double piping can be requested. Choose the same code as the cushion and the piping blends in rather than outlining.

**A common question:** The size calculator only asks for width and length. How do I order a trapezoid window seat cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Enter the maximum width and length so a price comes up, then write the exact shape in the personalization or order notes: long side, short side, depth and both angled sides. The workshop can also work the price out for you, as it did for a trapezoid about 86 1/2 in (220 cm) on the long side, 43 in (109 cm) on the short side and 24 in (61 cm) deep, and it sends photos of earlier trapezoid cushions on request.

> **Tailor's margin:** In a dark room, pick a cushion one step lighter than the walls and outline it with a pale piping, so the seat keeps its shape at dusk.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is chenille a good fabric for a reading nook window seat?

Yes, for an indoor nook. Chenille feels soft and plush with a gentle sheen that reads warm in low light. It can pill or snag at friction points, so expect the front edge to show wear before the rest of the seat.

### Why pick a piping lighter than the cushion in a dark room?

A pale piping outlines the cushion so it does not disappear into dark wood or paint, and a champagne tone repeats brass fittings. Judge the pair side by side in daylight and lamplight, because a thin line reads differently from a large swatch.

### How do I measure a curved window seat without a template?

Measure the straight line across the curve (the chord) and how far the curve bows out at its middle (the rise). The radius follows from those two numbers. Tight or irregular curves still need a paper template.

### Can I feel the fabric before choosing a shade?

Yes. Samples can be ordered for any fabric code the workshop sells, up to five codes per sample order. Seeing and touching the colors at home is the most reliable way to decide.
