# A plum velvet window seat cushion, tested against kids, dogs and winter sun

*Rosa takes a jewel-toned cushion on a white drawer window seat and runs it through ordinary family days: small knees, a napping dog, a spilled cocoa and a low winter sun.*

> **The quick answer:** A plum velvet window seat cushion can handle family life when its cover zips off for washing, its box edge is self-piped, and it isn't baking in strong sun all day. Brush the pile back after a crowd sits on it, blot spills at once, and turn the cushion now and then so the wear spreads evenly.

## Who will sit on a plum velvet window seat cushion?

First thing I wrote in my notebook: everybody is going to sit on this cushion. A plum velvet box cushion on a white built-in, brass bar pulls on the drawers below, a dark wood window full of winter light. It looks like a grown-up room. It is also exactly the spot a child picks to watch for snow.

The cushion reads about 4 in (10 cm) deep by eye, thick enough to look upholstered without crowding the sill. [Self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) in the same purple keeps the long front edge crisp, and that edge is where the life of this seat happens: knees, heels, a dog's front paws. A matching cord hides a little wear where a contrast cord would announce it.

Look at the front edge in the photo. It glows. That is the [pile](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#pile) catching cool daylight, and it tells you something practical: [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) shows which way it was last brushed. Where someone sat, the plum goes darker. Brush it back and the color comes up again.

The pillows do the contrast work. Charcoal satin, the tallest, goes in the back corner so the stack steps down toward the glass. Gold satin sits in the middle and answers the brass pulls. Gray faux fur goes in front to break up all that sheen. The cream shag rug catches whatever slides off, and the mirrored side table bounces window light back onto the velvet.

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, neighbor. If this seat has to pass their inspection, ask for a zippered cover, keep the satins for grown-up days, and mind the sun: a bright window fades deep colors over time, as the [fading pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-fading-sun/) explains. Who fights over the window seat at your house?

## Monday to Sunday: the family test, row by row

| Who or what | What happens to plum velvet | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Kids climbing up to the glass | The pile flattens where knees and heels land | Brush it back with a soft brush or a flat hand |
| A dog who naps in the window | Hair settles into the pile | A damp rubber glove or a lint roller lifts it |
| Cocoa, juice, a wet towel | The spill spreads into the pile | Blot, don't rub, then unzip the cover and wash it |
| Low winter sun | Deep jewel colors fade slowly at a bright window | Turn the cushion; draw a shade at midday |
| Everyday sitting | The front edge takes most of the wear | Self piping hides it better than a contrast cord |

## Pinned by Rosa: the plum velvet window seat

Start at the tall charcoal pillow in the back corner and follow the pins down to the self-piped edge and the brass pulls that set the gold.

1. **Charcoal satin pillow**: The tallest pillow goes in the back corner so the stack steps down toward the window.
2. **Gold satin pillow**: Gold picks up the brass pulls below and warms the cool purple.
3. **Gray faux-fur pillow**: A furry texture breaks up the sheen of the velvet and satin.
4. **Self-piped box edge**: Matching purple piping keeps the thick cushion reading as one solid block.
5. **Brass bar pull**: Long brass pulls echo the gold pillow and lift the white drawers.

## One velvet, a bench and a bay that widened toward the room

A buyer wrote to the workshop with two jobs and one fabric, velvet code P56. The first was a rectangular bench of 38 x 15.5 in (97 x 39.5 cm). The second was a bay window seat measuring 47.25 in (120 cm) along the back, 54 in (137 cm) along the front and 13.75 in (35 cm) deep.

The workshop offered 2, 3 or 4 in (5, 7.5 or 10 cm) of thickness and zippered covers that come off for washing, and quoted that order at 1 to 2 weeks from order to delivery. The rectangle went through the standard listing. The bay, with its angled sides, went through the trapezoid template listing, because an angled shape is not a rectangle with the corners trimmed.

For a family seat I like that zippered cover best of all. It is the difference between a spill being a Saturday chore and a spill being the end of the cushion. If your seat has angles, run them through the [trapezoid calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) before you ask for a quote.

## On the cutting table: the plum window perch

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Window seat cushion on a built-in drawer base |
| Fabric | Plum velvet |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Piping | Self piping in the same plum |
| Thickness | About 4 in (10 cm) by eye |
| Cover to ask for | Zippered and removable, so it can be washed |
| Pillows | Charcoal satin, gold satin, gray faux fur |
| Room | Bedroom window, white drawers, brass bar pulls |
| Best for | A reading perch the whole family shares |

## Buyer questions: colors, codes and a size that changed

**A common question:** Your photos show colors that aren't on the swatch chart. Is there a bigger fabric range?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop has more colors than the standard chart shows and has shared extra charts, including a link to all of its fabric charts and a second linen chart. If a code you want isn't on the listing, such as L-54, write it in the personalization box or the order notes.

**A common question:** Two photos of the same fabric code look different, one warm and one cool. Which is closer in person?

**The workshop's answer:** Lighting, camera angle and different screens easily push a color warmer or cooler, so one code can look different across photos and the chart. The workshop took a fresh close-up of the actual fabric in front of them so the buyer could see the true color.

**A common question:** I typed my real size in the notes but paid for a standard size. What happens now?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop won't make the standard size you picked. It confirms the price for your real measurements and, if that costs more, sends a payment link for the difference. Production starts once the balance is paid, and the same goes for a custom option that was set up for another buyer.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a family window seat, match the piping to the velvet. The front edge takes the knees and heels, and a self-piped cord hides that wear.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is velvet sensible for a window seat the kids use every day?

It can be, with the right details. Choose a zippered cover that comes off for washing, self piping so the busy front edge hides wear, and get into the habit of brushing the pile back. Keep delicate satin pillows for days when the little ones are elsewhere.

### Why does a velvet cushion look darker where someone has been sitting?

Velvet has a pile, a surface of short upright fibers. Sitting presses them flat, and flattened fibers reflect light differently, so the spot reads darker or lighter. Brushing in the direction of the pile lifts them again. It is how velvet behaves.

### Which pillows suit a plum velvet window seat?

Pillows in the metal and neutral tones already in the room. Here gold satin repeats the brass drawer pulls, charcoal satin anchors the back corner, and gray faux fur adds texture.
