# A plum velvet vanity chair cushion with ties, put through a year of powder, perfume and a curious cat

*A dressing-table chair is seen from behind, sat on in a hurry and dusted with face powder. Right, then: my notebook on how plum velvet with teal-gray piping holds up, and what to measure before you order the ties.*

> **The quick answer:** A velvet chair cushion with ties suits a bedroom vanity if you plan for daily wear: a zippered cover that washes at 86°F (30°C) or lower, ties bowed at the back posts where they show, and a darker velvet, since pale velvet shows seat marks sooner. Measure the seat at the front and the back separately, because most older chairs taper.

## Notebook, page one: this chair is seen from behind

Half the people who ever notice a vanity chair only see its back. So the bows matter more than the seat.

Here the plum velvet ties are knotted neatly at both rear posts, matching, so the back view is symmetrical. The seat is a box-edged pad outlined in teal-gray piping on both seams. Plum and teal are jewel tones from opposite sides of the color wheel, which is why the contrast looks rich rather than loud. The welt runs true around both front corners; I checked twice. Old habits.

The room does the rest. A round brass mirror and brass drawer pulls on the walnut chest warm up the cool teal, so it never looks cold. Glass perfume bottles on a tray catch the light, a dried bouquet picks up the plum at eye level, and a leafy houseplant and a gray wool rug soften all that wood.

The rule I'd copy: a velvet body, piping from the opposite side of the color wheel, and the room's metal repeated nearby. There are more [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) pairings in the Swatch Library, more pads with ties among our [dining chair cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/), and a sketch of [jewel-tone velvet cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/jewel-tone-velvet-cushions/).

What's the chair in your bedroom that everybody sees from the doorway?

## Pinned by Maggie: from the velvet bows to the dried flowers

Five pins, from the two velvet bows at the back posts to the dried flowers picking up the plum at eye level.

1. **Purple velvet tie**: The chair is seen from behind at a vanity, so the bows are styled as a feature.
2. **Second tie bow**: Matching bows on both rear posts keep the back view symmetrical.
3. **Teal-gray piping**: A jewel-on-jewel contrast that looks rich rather than loud.
4. **Round brass mirror**: Brass in the mirror and drawer pulls warms the cool teal welt.
5. **Dried flower vase**: Dried blooms pick up the plum of the cushion at eye level.

## The daily-life test, ticked off in pencil

- ✓ Face powder and dust: velvet holds it in the pile. A soft brush lifts most of it, and the zippered cover goes in the machine at 86°F (30°C) or lower.
- ✓ Perfume, lotion and nail polish remover: unzip the cover and deal with it at the sink rather than scrubbing on the chair. Our [stain first aid](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-stain-removal-first-aid/) has the order of operations.
- ✓ Seat marks: velvet shows compression more than flat weaves do. Plum is dark enough to hide most of it; blush or ivory would not.
- ✓ The bows: they get tugged every time the chair is pulled out. Check them when you dust, and see [tie placement on chairs](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-tie-placement-chairs-swings/) before you order.
- ✓ The cat: will sit there regardless. Plan accordingly, and keep a lint roller in the top drawer.

## Two leather armchairs, a sofa, and seats that weren't square

One buyer wrote in wanting luxurious dusky rose velvet seats for two old leather armchairs, and later for a two-seater sofa. They also asked whether feather fill could go on top of the foam.

Then the tape came out, and none of it was square. The chair seats measured 21 in (53 cm) deep, 19 in (48 cm) across the back and 20.5 in (52 cm) across the front. The sofa seat was 21 in (53 cm) deep, 40 in (102 cm) at the back and 41 in (104 cm) at the front.

The personalization text kept dropping at checkout, so the buyer sent the sizes by message. The workshop drew a measurement sketch and waited for a yes before cutting. I have made the mistake of cutting to one width, dear, and I do not recommend it.

## Buyer questions: back ties, a wheelchair seat and an arched edge

**A common question:** Could you make a chair cushion with ties at the back, about 5 in thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop asked for a photo of the chair and its measurements (that seat base was 21.5 in, about 55 cm), then sent close-ups of smoke, beige, brown and mint, plus a linen swatch card, to choose from.

**A common question:** I need a 16 x 22 in cushion for a wheelchair seat. Is that a size you can make?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Small seat cushions like this are made to the exact measurements you send, 16 x 22 in (41 x 56 cm) included.

**A common question:** My dining chairs have back supports. Can the cushion be notched around them, or arched at the back?

**The workshop's answer:** Notches for back supports can't be fitted reliably from a distance, so the workshop suggested an arched back edge. It checked the drawing, a 20 in (51 cm) chord on a 12.5 in (32 cm) radius, which gives a 5 in (13 cm) arc, and confirmed sharp corners where the arc meets the sides, about 1 in rounded front corners, the zipper along the arc, ties inset 4.5 in (11.5 cm) and a non-slip base.

## On the cutting table: the plum velvet chair pad

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Vanity chair seat pad with ties |
| Fabric | Plum velvet |
| Piping | Teal-gray contrast welt, top and bottom seams |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Ties | Plum velvet, bowed at both rear posts |
| Measure | Front width, back width and depth, each on its own |
| Cover | Zippered; machine wash at 86°F (30°C) or lower |
| Best for | Bedroom vanities, desks and dining chairs seen from behind |

> Old chair seats are rarely square: one pair measured 19 in across the back and 20 1/2 in across the front, so measure both edges before ordering a cushion.

> **Tailor's margin:** Bow the ties at the back posts of a vanity chair cushion; the back is the side everyone sees from the doorway.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is velvet practical on a bedroom vanity chair?

Yes, with a zippered cover and a darker shade. Velvet shows seat marks more than flat weaves, so plum, navy or bottle green forgive daily use better than blush or ivory. The cover comes off to wash at 86°F (30°C) or lower.

### Where should the ties go on a vanity chair cushion?

At the back corners, around the rear posts. A vanity chair is seen from behind, so matching bows there read as a finished detail rather than a fix. Measure the gap between the posts so the ties sit snug.

### What piping color works with plum velvet?

A cool jewel tone from the other side of the color wheel, such as teal-gray. It outlines the seat without shouting. Repeat a warm metal nearby, like brass, so the cool welt never looks cold.
