# Six bolster pillows, one diameter: a plum, navy and burgundy daybed stack

*A pile of rolls looks easy until one of them is fatter than the rest. This one was sized to the stripe, and it shows.*

> **The quick answer:** A bolster stack on a daybed stays put when every bolster shares one diameter, so size them all to the same roll, here matched to the green stripe. Remember each inch of diameter along the back takes an inch of seat depth, and use a firm high-density seat cushion so the pile sits on a level shelf rather than sinking.

![Stacked pyramid of bolsters on a linen daybed cushion: plum velvet on top, navy corduroy, burgundy tweed and green stripe](https://cushionguide.com/media/bolster-pillows/plum-navy-burgundy-bolster-pyramid-linen-daybed-1600.webp "Bolsters sized to match the green stripe, piled into a pyramid so every end cap and fabric shows at once.")

## Pinned by Harlan: a pyramid read from the crown down

Read these pins from the top roll down, the way you would read a good cabinet from the crown molding to the feet.

1. **Plum velvet on top**: The one shiny fabric crowns the pile, where it catches the most light.
2. **Navy corduroy pair**: Two identical rolls form the middle tier, so the pyramid stays stable.
3. **Burgundy tweed base**: The flattest, firmest weave sits at the bottom and carries the weight.
4. **Green stripe in front**: Laid across the front, the stripe acts like a bar under the stack and breaks up the solids.
5. **Linen seat cushion**: A pale linen base keeps the jewel tones from competing with the furniture.

## Six rolls, one diameter, and a velvet crown

Six bolsters, and not one of them bigger than its neighbor. That is why the pile stands.

Two burgundy tweed rolls sit at the bottom. Tweed is the flattest, firmest weave in the stack, so it carries the weight, the way a good workbench keeps its heaviest drawer lowest. Two navy corduroys make the middle tier. Identical pairs keep a pyramid honest; one odd size and it leans by suppertime.

The plum velvet goes on top. It is the only fabric here with a sheen, and the top of a pile catches the most daylight, so the plum shows its whole depth. Velvet remembers. Brush it one way and it answers with a lighter shade, which is why it belongs where the light can find it.

The green and ivory stripe lies across the front like a rail under a shelf. Every other roll is solid, and the stripe breaks them up before they run together into one dark lump.

Each round end is finished with self piping, a thin line of the same cloth that shows you the shape of every [bolster pillow](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bolster-pillows/) from across the room. Underneath sits a pale linen seat cushion on a white beadboard daybed. That plain stage is what lets five jewel tones share one bench without a quarrel. The whole set was sized to the stripe, so the eye compares fabric, not size.

## What a bolster takes from the seat

Now the proportion, because a pile of rolls is only pretty until somebody wants to sit down.

A twin daybed runs about 39 in (99 cm) from the wall to the front edge. Nobody sits that deep. Lay bolsters along the back and every inch of their diameter comes off the seat. Pick a fat roll and you perch on the front lip; pick a thin one and your shoulders meet the wall. The Pattern on [bolster diameter and length](https://cushionguide.com/guides/bolster-pillow-size-diameter/) works through the arithmetic.

What lies under the rolls counts too. A seat cushion of firm, high-density foam stays flat and level, so the bolsters rest on a shelf instead of rolling into a dip. That goes double on an [IKEA Hemnes daybed](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/ikea-hemnes-daybed-covers/) where guests sleep, because at night you spread these rolls along the back and want them to stay where you put them.

By day, keep the pyramid at the foot, where it is a bit of color and nobody's backrest. By night, lay the rolls in a line against the wall.

How deep is your daybed from the wall to the front edge, my friend?

## Mustard ordered, brick delivered

A family in the US wrote to the workshop about their floor sofa. They had ordered mustard covers and opened a box of brick. The couch itself, they said, was great and comfortable. Only the color was wrong, and that was the workshop's doing.

The workshop sent the mustard covers straight away. They did not want to pay for a set they never chose, and they should not have had to. So the workshop offered two roads: keep the brick covers with part of their cost refunded by the workshop, as its own mistake, or take a return label and send them home.

The workshop owed them the color they picked, the same as any maker owes a straight seam. When your box arrives, check the color at one end of the roll pack before you unpack it all the way. If something is wrong, get what happens next in writing. With five fabrics in one bolster stack, that little check matters five times over.

## Buyer questions: other brands' sofas, French edges and covers over old filling

**A common question:** Will your covers fit a teddy floor sofa I bought from another brand, or will theirs fit yours?

**The workshop's answer:** Likely. The workshop's floor sofa is 39.5 x 79 x 13.5 in (100 x 200 x 34 cm), and other popular teddy and corduroy floor sofas are very close in size. Check the height of each piece first; one buyer's own inserts did not match its backrest covers.

**A common question:** Could a replacement cover have a French edge instead of piping?

**The workshop's answer:** Not on a cover sold by itself. Stand-alone covers are made with piping. A French edge is only made on tufted cushions.

**A common question:** If I buy only a cover for my existing daybed cushion, will it look as crisp as your photos?

**The workshop's answer:** Not necessarily. The workshop's cushions use high-density foam, which is what makes them look structured and flat. A new cover over soft or slouchy filling will likely keep the slouch, so the workshop asks whether you want the cover only, bolster covers too, or new foam as well.

> **Tailor's margin:** Every inch of bolster diameter laid along a daybed's back is an inch of seat depth you give away.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why is the velvet bolster on top of the stack?

Velvet is the one fabric in the pile with a sheen, and the top of a stack catches the most light, so the plum reads richest there. The flatter, firmer tweed sits at the bottom and carries the weight of the rolls above.

### How do I use a bolster pile on a daybed that sleeps guests?

Keep the pile at the foot of the daybed by day as a color piece. At night, spread the rolls along the back as a backrest line, or lift them off entirely to free the full mattress width.

### Can bolsters in different fabrics share one size?

Yes. Give one diameter and one length for the whole set and choose the fabric roll by roll. Matching the size is what makes velvet, corduroy, tweed and stripe look like one family instead of a drawer of strays.

### Should a daybed seat cushion be firm under a stack of bolsters?

Firm is better. A high-density foam seat stays flat and level, so the rolls sit in a neat line. Over a soft or slouchy filling, the stack tips toward the dip and the arrangement looks tired by evening.
