# The blue corduroy star floor cushion that keeps a busy playroom calm

*Harlan steps back to see the whole playroom: a road rug, confetti boxes, a pink niche, and one petrol blue star that holds it together because it carries no pattern at all.*

> **The quick answer:** In a playroom full of pattern, make the star floor cushion a plain, textured solid. This petrol blue corduroy star has a box edge and no piping, with mustard and gray corduroy pillows, while the busy prints stay on the road rug and confetti boxes. Corduroy's wale adds texture without adding another pattern, and the blue star balances the pink niche.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** The preferences menu has me confused. Which option gets me the pieces I actually want?

**The workshop's answer:** Each option in the menu shows a reference picture of the exact pieces included, such as sofa only, sofa with ottoman or corner sofa, so you choose by the picture and then pick a color. For one three-piece studio setup the pieces were named Ottoman, Ottoman / straight back and Ottoman / corner back.

**A common question:** Could I see real photos, or a video of someone sitting on it, before I buy?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. On request the shop sent extra photos in several colors, a video, and photos of the base cushion while someone sat on it, so you can see how far it gives.

**A common question:** My order went through twice by mistake. How do I get the duplicate refunded?

**The workshop's answer:** Tell the shop. It cancels the duplicate and ships the other order. The refund is handled by the marketplace that processed the payment, so it can take a few days to show.

## One pattern per zone, and the star gets none

Step back from the corner and the whole room reads like a well-set table, my friend. Every busy thing has its own place.

The pattern lives low and at the edges. The road-map play rug carries streets and wooden blocks in the middle of the floor. Black confetti-print boxes sit on the shelves. That is plenty of print for one room, and nobody asked the cushion to join in.

So the star is a plain: petrol blue corduroy, box edge, no piping. It is the biggest block of color in the room, and it balances the pink-painted niche across the corner. A patterned star here would have fought the rug for attention.

Texture does what pattern can't. Corduroy's wale is a fine stripe you feel more than see, so the star has life without adding another print. The mustard corduroy pillow and the gray corduroy lumbar keep to the same cloth in different colors. Same weave, three colors: that is how you mix without a quarrel.

No piping is a choice too. On a star, a welt would trace every point and make the shape look fussy. Left plain, the points stay soft, which suits small hands and knees.

The rest earns its keep. The canopy crown hangs high, so its drape falls just outside the star's points. The yellow giraffe floor lamp links the canopy corner to the rest of the room. Numbered boxes on the top shelf hold what grown-ups reach for. The red stool and the cloud wall lamp are the loud notes, each used once.

## Pinned by Harlan: the playroom from the doorway

Five pins across the playroom, from the blue star in the corner to the canopy crown above it.

1. **Blue corduroy star**: The largest block of color, balancing the pink niche across the corner.
2. **Pink painted niche**: Paint only the recess and the bookcase becomes a feature.
3. **Numbered boxes**: Top-shelf boxes hold what adults need to reach, not the child.
4. **Giraffe lamp**: Bridges the canopy corner and the rest of the room.
5. **Canopy crown**: Hung high so the drape falls just outside the star's points.

## Where each pattern and texture sits

| Zone | What is there | Pattern or plain |
|---|---|---|
| Corner | Petrol blue corduroy star, mustard and gray cord pillows | Plain, textured |
| Floor | Road-map play rug with wooden blocks | Busy pattern |
| Shelves | Black confetti boxes, numbered boxes | Small print |
| Niche | Pink-painted recess behind the bookcase | Solid color |
| Accents | Red stool, cloud lamp, giraffe lamp | One of each |

## Twenty inches is chair height, not floor height

A buyer in the US asked the workshop for a floor sofa 85 in (216 cm) wide with 10 in (25 cm) thick seats, to reach a 20 in (51 cm) seat height. The workshop had to say no twice, kindly. A single floor sofa can't go past 79 in (201 cm), and its seat thickness isn't customized. What it could offer was an ottoman add-on, which brings the layout to 118 in (300 cm).

I tell this one to every family shopping for a playroom. Floor sofas and star cushions sit low on purpose; that is their whole charm for children. If a grown-up needs a 20 in seat, a floor piece is the wrong tool, and it is better to hear that before you buy than after.

## On the cutting table: the playroom star

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Star floor cushion, box edge |
| Fabric | Corduroy, petrol blue |
| Piping | None, so the points stay soft |
| Pillows | Mustard corduroy square, gray corduroy lumbar |
| Placed | Under a ceiling-hung canopy in the corner |
| Pattern kept to | Road-map rug and confetti boxes |
| Best for | Playrooms and kids' reading corners |

> **Tailor's margin:** Hang a canopy over a star floor cushion high enough that the drape falls just outside the points, not bunched under them.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a star floor cushion have piping?

It can, but on a star a welt traces every point and makes the outline busier. Leaving it off, as on this petrol blue corduroy star, keeps the points soft and lets the color do the work in a room that already has plenty going on.

### How do you mix patterns in a kids' room without chaos?

Give each zone one job. Keep the busiest print on the rug or storage, make the biggest soft piece a plain, and repeat one fabric in different colors. Here three corduroys in blue, mustard and gray sit together because the weave matches.

### Where should a star cushion go in a playroom?

In a corner, where it makes a soft zone and leaves the middle of the floor free for blocks and cars. Here the star sits under a ceiling-hung canopy and balances a pink-painted niche across the room.
