# A pistachio basketweave custom bench cushion, and how to order a color right the first time

*A pale green box cushion glowing against a charcoal wall. Close up, it shows what a sharp edge looks like, and why the code matters more than the color name.*

> **The quick answer:** To order a custom bench cushion color right the first time, choose from physical swatches in daylight, write the exact fabric code in the order note, and give all three dimensions. Screens and indoor light shift color. One buyer sampled three beige codes before ordering a 48 x 48 x 4 in (122 x 122 x 10 cm) cushion.

## The palette, measured from the photo

- Pistachio — #bcb89b — The boxing strip in shadow. Order the code, not this word.
- Pistachio in light — #d4d2bd — The top panel. Same cloth, a shade paler.
- Olive leaf — #847b5a — The olive branch: the same green, darker and dustier.
- Charcoal wall — #43413a — The backdrop that makes a light green glow.
- Shelf shadow — #1a1714 — The deepest note, under shelf and bench.

## A box cushion that holds its corners

Dark wall, pale green cushion, rough timber underneath. The light comes in low and from the side, the way it does in a boathouse late in the day.

This is what a deep box [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) should look like. The boxing strip runs straight. The piping sits right on the seam. The corners are filled out, not rounded off. The piping is cut from the same pistachio cloth, so it sharpens the edge without painting a stripe around it.

The [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) basketweave shows best on the boxing strip, where light hits it side-on. The celadon cup and the olive branch in its pale vase repeat the green, one paler, one darker; the olives on the shelf do the same at the back. A cream linen pillow gives the eye a pale step.

The brass tray is the trick worth stealing, friend. It turns a thick cushion into a surface for drinks, and a spill lands on brass instead of soaking in.

Now the ordering. Color names drift; codes don't. Here one cloth reads as two shades, top and side; think what a phone screen does to it. Order [samples first](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/), look at them by a window, then write the exact code in the note. Which code is on your shortlist?

## Pinned by Callum: five marks on a thick cushion

Five pins, from the piped corner to the rough bench top.

1. **Self piping corner**: Matching piping sharpens the corner of a deep box cushion without adding a new color.
2. **Basketweave texture**: The tight basketweave shows up on the boxing strip, where light hits it side-on.
3. **Brass tray and cup**: A tray lets a soft cushion work as a coffee table without spills soaking in.
4. **Olive branch vase**: Olive leaves repeat the green at a darker, dustier value.
5. **Rustic bench top**: Rough timber underneath makes the smooth, tailored cushion look even crisper.

## Three beige samples before a 48 in square

A buyer in the US wanted a square cushion, 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm). It was quoted at 3 in (8 cm) thick; she switched to 4 in (10 cm). She sent for samples of three beige codes, N01, N24 and L51, and ordered with the code in hand.

Then she bought a little over 2 yards (2 m) of the same fabric to upholster a matching piece herself. The [fabric yardage calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/fabric-yardage-calculator/) does that math before you order.

## Buyer questions: backs, colors and coupon codes

**A common question:** How do I keep back cushions from sliding?

**The workshop's answer:** It depends on what they lean against. Against a frame, railing or slats, matching fabric ties let you tie them on. Against a flat wall or a solid backrest, a non-slip backing works better.

**A common question:** The color I received doesn't match the chart; my olive brown looks plain brown. What can you do?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop checks that the exact fabric code was used, explains that indoor light and screens change how color reads, and asks for daylight photos. For a reorder it sends free physical samples and real fabric photos, with a discount. It advised against sending the cushions back, since return shipping would cost more than they did.

**A common question:** Is the listed price already discounted, or do I need a coupon code?

**The workshop's answer:** Listed prices are already discounted, so no code is needed; the only further discount is for 3 or more cushions. If a promo code won't apply at checkout, the difference is refunded by hand.

## On the cutting table: the pistachio box

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Deep rectangular box bench cushion |
| Fabric | Pistachio basketweave outdoor acrylic |
| Piping | Self piping in the same pistachio |
| Edge | Straight boxing strip, filled-out corners |
| Order note | Exact fabric code, plus length, width and thickness |
| Samples | Physical swatches, checked by a window |
| Best for | Thick bench seats that double as a surface |

> Order a cushion by its fabric code, not its color name: one pistachio cloth reads as two shades between the top panel and the boxing strip.

> **Tailor's margin:** A screen is a forecast; a swatch by a window is the weather. One buyer sampled 3 beige codes before ordering a 48 in square cushion.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does self piping make a box cushion look sharper?

Self piping is cut from the cushion's own fabric and sits on the seam, so it defines the edge without a stripe of a second color. On a deep box cushion it keeps the corners crisp.

### Is a fabric code more reliable than a color name?

Yes. Names like pistachio or olive brown mean different things to different people, and screens shift them further. The code names the exact cloth.

### Can I buy extra fabric to match other furniture?

Yes. One buyer ordered a 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) cushion and bought a little over 2 yards (2 m) of the same fabric to upholster a matching piece at home.
