# A pinstripe bedroom window seat cushion with a dusty-pink bolster, and a depth set by the window handle

*Rosa reads a bedroom window seat dressed for lying down: a charcoal pinstripe, a tasseled pink bolster along the glass, and a depth decided by the window handle.*

> **The quick answer:** A bedroom window seat cushion should be only as deep as the seat allows once window handles, latches and trim are counted; one buyer cut a 21 in (53 cm) depth to 16 in (41 cm) so the handle would clear. For lounging, lay a bolster along the glass instead of adding a back cushion that takes up depth.

## Pinned by Rosa: one bedroom window, five details

Five pins on one bedroom window, from the pinstripe box border to the linen bedding a step away.

1. **Pinstripe box border**: Stripes running front to back make the long seat look less deep.
2. **Tasselled pink bolster**: A bolster along the glass gives a neck rest for lounging lengthwise.
3. **Mustard velvet pillow**: Velvet at the end wall adds a warm sheen next to the matt linen.
4. **Throw basket**: The fringed throw is ready for reading on a cool morning.
5. **Linen bedding**: Placing the seat beside the bed turns it into a daytime lounge spot.

## A seat made for lying down, not for dropping clothes

My grandmother had a rule for any seat near a bed: make it comfortable enough to lie on, or it turns into a laundry chair. This window seat follows her rule.

It's a white storage seat under a sash window, right beside a bed dressed in linen. The cushion is a charcoal and chalk-white pinstripe in linen, self-piped with a box edge. The stripes run front to back, and on a long seat that makes the depth read shorter and calmer, so the bench looks like a slim daybed, not a deep shelf.

Now the proportion that matters most. The dusty-pink **bolster** with tasseled ends lies along the glass. It's a neck rest for lounging lengthwise, and it adds comfort without a full back cushion that would steal depth from the seat. Mustard velvet and a cream pillow with rust lattice stitching lean on the end wall, where your back goes when you sit up to read.

The rest of the frame keeps things warm: a walnut nightstand stacked with books, trailing pothos, a wicker basket holding a fringed knitted throw for a cool morning, a cream rug and white sheer curtains. The gray cushion is the only cool note, and the overcast northern light keeps it soft.

Do you lie down on your window seat, or only sit?

## Setting the depth: four checks before you order

1. **Measure the seat surface**: Measure the depth from the wall or window trim to the front edge at both ends and in the middle. Keep the smallest number.
2. **Open the window**: Turn every handle and latch through its full swing and note how far into the seat it reaches.
3. **Check the trim**: Sills and casings can stick out past the glass line. Measure from the deepest one.
4. **Order the smaller depth**: Order the depth the hardware allows, not the depth of the box. A bolster along the glass gives back the lounging comfort.

## Twenty-one inches deep, until the window handle spoke up

A buyer messaged the workshop for a velvet window seat cushion, 21 x 62 in (53 x 157 cm). Before anything was cut, they remembered the window handle: at 21 in deep, the cushion would sit right where the handle swings.

So they cut the depth to 16 in (41 cm) and ordered a 16 x 62 in (41 x 157 cm) cushion in velvet #20. Five inches smaller on paper, and a window that can still open.

Handles and latches are the easiest thing to forget, neighbor. Before you fix the depth, open the window, turn every latch, and look at the trim. ## Buyer questions: grip, speed, and the corner of an L

**A common question:** Is the non-slip bottom an extra charge, and can I still put the cover in the washing machine?

**The workshop's answer:** It's a small add-on per cushion. The old non-slip backing meant covers couldn't be machine washed, so the workshop sourced a new washable non-slip material that keeps covers washable at 86°F (30°C). At the time, that material took about a week to reach the workshop, so it added a little lead time.

**A common question:** I need two bench cushions fast. What's the quickest you can do?

**The workshop's answer:** It depends on the season and the queue. For one buyer who asked this, two custom bench cushions, 44 x 18 in (112 x 46 cm) and 74 x 18 in (188 x 46 cm), were quoted at 5 days of making and 3 to 5 days of delivery after dispatch, about 8 to 10 days from order to door. Give your date when you ask.

**A common question:** For an L-shaped banquette, do I order one L cushion or two pieces, and how long is the short side?

**The workshop's answer:** Two straight pieces work well; one buyer ordered 70 x 18 in (178 x 46 cm) and 102 x 18 in (259 x 46 cm) in fabric N03. The corner is the catch: the short piece is the total run minus the depth of the long cushion in the corner. A 61 in (155 cm) run with a 19 in (48 cm) deep long cushion needed about 42 in (107 cm), not 61. Very large banquettes may need more pieces, so send measurements first.

> Check the window handle before you fix a window seat cushion's depth; one 62 in seat went from 21 in deep to 16 in to clear it.

> **Tailor's margin:** A bolster laid along the glass gives a window seat a neck rest for lounging, without a back cushion eating into the seat depth.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How deep should a bedroom window seat cushion be?

As deep as the seat allows after window handles, latches and trim are counted. Measure the seat in three places, open the window fully, and order the smaller depth. One 21 in design was cut to 16 in (41 cm) to clear a handle.

### Where should a bolster go on a window seat?

Along the glass, for lounging lengthwise: it becomes a neck rest and a soft edge against a cold pane. A bolster about the width of the window gives that comfort without committing to a full back cushion.

### Which way should pinstripes run on a long window seat?

Front to back makes a long, deep seat read shorter and calmer from across the room. Stripes running along the length stretch the eye sideways instead, which suits a short seat you want to look longer.
