# Pink and teal chair pads on six teak chairs, and the mistakes they sidestep

*Six teak chairs, twelve pads, one small geometric weave. I have made most of the mistakes this set avoids, so I kept notes on graph paper.*

> **The quick answer:** The most common dining chair cushion mistakes are measuring only one side of the seat, ordering a pad smaller than the seat, and picking a large pattern that looks different on every chair. This teak set avoids all three: full-seat boxed pads, slim matching back pads and a small geometric repeat in outdoor acrylic. Measure left and right edges separately; chairs are rarely square.

## Notes from the flagstones, before anyone sits down

Twelve pads on six teak chairs, and not one looks different from its neighbor. Right, then. That is harder than it sounds, and I say so as someone who once cut a large floral for eight chairs and delivered eight different chairs.

The trick here is scale. The weave is a small geometric in white, raspberry pink, teal and navy, so every seat and back pad looks the same wherever the cutting falls on the pattern. A small repeat also hides crumbs and everyday outdoor wear better than a plain, which matters on a table used every summer evening.

Proportion next. Each boxed seat pad covers the whole seat, front edge to back slat, so nothing presses through. The back pads are slim and follow the slatted chair backs, staying put above the seat. Self piping keeps every outline tidy without adding one more line to a busy weave.

Color does the rest. The raspberry answers the climbing roses and the pink geraniums in the terracotta pots; the teal picks up the herbs, the clipped box ball and the leaves all around. Silvered teak and gray flagstone are the quiet base a lively pattern needs. Bright midday sun is unforgiving, and a set this even survives it.

The cloth is [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), the shape sits with the [dining chair cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/), and the setting belongs with [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/).

## Pinned by Maggie: five notes in the photo's margin

Five pins mark what this garden set gets right, from the slim back pad to the geraniums that echo the weave.

1. **Slim back pad**: A thin back pad follows the slatted chair back and stays put above the seat.
2. **Boxed seat pad**: The seat pad covers the full seat so no slats press through.
3. **Matching set**: Six chairs share one fabric, so the whole table reads as a single set.
4. **Teak table**: Silvered teak gives a quiet base for a lively pattern.
5. **Terracotta pots**: Pink geraniums repeat the raspberry in the geometric weave.

## Six mistakes, crossed out

- ✗ Measuring one side of the seat and assuming the other matches. Measure left and right edges separately.
- ✗ Ordering a seat pad smaller than the seat, so the front slats press through.
- ✗ Choosing a large repeat for a set of six. Every chair gets a different slice of the pattern.
- ✗ Picking a plain pale fabric for outdoor dining, where crumbs and wear show first.
- ✗ Putting a chunky back pad on a slatted back. A slim pad follows the slats and stays put.
- ✗ Guessing where the ties go. Ties sit at the back, placed from your measurements of the uprights.

## Four ladder-back chair pads that were not quite square

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop wanting 4 in (10 cm) cushions for four vintage ladder-back chairs, measured from a diagram. The workshop asked for both side edges, and the numbers didn't add up. So they measured again.

The second set made sense: sides of about 11 in (28 cm), with front and back edges of 13 in and 14 in (33 and 36 cm). A seat that is an inch wider at one edge is a small trapezoid, and a square pad would have hung over at one corner and fallen short at another. Ties went on at the back, the covers were made removable and washable, and after comparing close-up photos the buyer chose a fabric with a contrasting piping.

Chairs are rarely square, dear, and vintage ones almost never are. The routine is in [dining chair pad measurements](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dining-chair-pad-measurements/), and tapered seats get their own [concept sketch on tapered chair pads](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/tapered-dining-chair-pads/).

## Buyer questions: oval seats, bulk orders and the return question

**A common question:** I have a wicker loveseat with rounded corners. Can you make oval cushions for it, and matching pillows?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Rounded and oval cushions are made; the craftsmen check the shape first from a simple drawing with every measurement and a photo of the seat. Matching square pillows, such as 16 x 16 in (41 x 41 cm) with the same piping, can go on the same quote.

**A common question:** If I order eight chair cushions instead of one, is there a discount?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Eight 17 x 18 in (43 x 46 cm) velvet seat cushions were quoted below the per-piece total, and four corduroy lounge chair sets with ottomans also came down when quoted as one set.

**A common question:** If something goes wrong, can you send a return label or take the return postage out of my refund?

**The workshop's answer:** No return labels are possible: the workshop's carrier contracts cover outgoing shipments only, and a return quote for a bulky cushion can run to several hundred dollars. When a cushion was made correctly, the workshop may offer a small partial refund if you keep it instead.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure the left and right sides of every chair seat, then the front and back. On one ladder-back set the edges ran 13 in and 14 in.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do slatted teak chairs need back pads as well as seat pads?

If you sit long at the table, yes. A slim back pad follows the slats and stays put above the seat, while the seat pad does the real cushioning. Order both in the same fabric so the whole set reads as one.

### Why pick a small geometric pattern for patio chair cushions?

A small repeat looks the same however each pad is cut, so six chairs match. It also hides crumbs and everyday outdoor wear better than a plain fabric, which counts on a dining set used every summer evening.

### Where do ties go on a dining chair cushion?

At the back, where they wrap the chair's uprights or spindles. On one set of four ladder-back pads the ties were added at the back and placed from each chair's measurements. Tell the workshop where your uprights sit before cutting.

### Should every chair in a dining set be measured?

Measure one chair fully, both sides plus front and back, then check the others against it. Vintage chairs especially can differ; one set of seats ran about 11 in (28 cm) deep with 13 in and 14 in (33 and 36 cm) edges.
