# A pink striped star floor cushion at a child's eye level

*Get down on the carpet for this one. From a child's height the star becomes a small stage, and every stripe on it has to line up where two points meet.*

> **The quick answer:** To mix patterns around a star floor cushion, let the striped pouf be the only pattern and keep everything near it plain or textured: a cream cloud pillow, a gray star, a soft canopy. The stripes must meet cleanly at each inner V, where the top panel, side wall and piping join. Striped cotton is for indoor rooms.

![Low eye-level view across a pink and raspberry striped star pouf toward a fairy-lit canopy with cloud and star pillows](https://cushionguide.com/media/star-poufs/pink-striped-star-floor-cushion-eye-level-view-1600.webp "From a child's eye level the striped star becomes a small stage, with the lit canopy as its backdrop.")

## What a five-year-old sees first

Five pins, from the seam at the front to the shelf at the top of the frame.

1. **Inner V seam**: Top panel, box wall and piping all meet here; careful cutting stops the stripes from jogging.
2. **Front star point**: Filled firmly to the tip so the point holds its shape when leaned on.
3. **Cream cloud pillow**: A soft, round shape against a graphic stripe.
4. **String-light curtain**: Out-of-focus lights become a backdrop at a child's eye level.
5. **Book shelf**: Shelves stay in frame to show this is a reading corner, not a display.

## One stripe, and everything else plain

You are looking across the star from the height of a small child, my friend, and that is the right height to judge it from. Raspberry and candy pink stripes run out along each arm. Everything else in the frame is plain: a cream cloud pillow, a gray star pillow, a canopy of fairy lights gone soft and round in the blur.

That is the whole rule for mixing. One pattern carries the corner. The rest bring shape and texture instead of more lines. The cloud is round where the stripes are straight, and the gray star repeats the shape without the stripe, so the eye gets an echo, not an argument.

The shelf of books and wooden toys stays in the frame, blurred, to say this is a reading corner and not a display. The heart and flower prints and the potted plant keep quiet.

## Where the stripes have to meet

Look at the inner V at the front, where two points of the star come together. The top panel, the box wall and the piping all meet in that one small place. Cut carelessly, the stripes jog there, and a child's eye finds a jog faster than any inspector.

The front point is filled firmly right to its tip, so it keeps its shape when someone leans on it. The piping is cut from the same stripe, so the edge stays part of the pattern instead of drawing a new line.

For [star poufs](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/star-poufs/) in [striped cotton](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/), ask which way the stripes will run on each arm before you order. The [stripe direction Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) shows the choices. What does your child's corner already hold, and which piece in it has the pattern?

## The floor sofa that kept coming apart

A buyer in the US had a floor sofa whose push-together metal bars came loose too easily; children climbed, grown-ups shoved it back, and the frame kept drifting apart. They asked whether they could screw the bars together.

The workshop offered its newer iron frame instead, with bars that attach and stay put once connected. It was shipped, it fixed the problem, and nobody needed a screwdriver. Buy the cushion once, cry once. The same goes for the frame underneath it.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Star floor cushion (star pouf), box edge |
| Fabric | Striped cotton, raspberry red, candy pink and cream |
| Piping | Self piping cut from the same stripe |
| The seam to check | Each inner V, where top panel, wall and piping meet |
| Fill at the points | Packed firmly to each tip |
| Pillows around it | Cream cloud and gray star, ordered separately |
| Use | Indoors; striped cotton marks more easily |
| Best for | A kids' reading corner on carpet |

> On a striped star floor cushion, the inner V is the test: the top panel, side wall and piping meet there, and a careless cut makes the stripes jog.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Is your linen fabric really 100% linen?

**The workshop's answer:** It depends on the color, so ask about the exact one you choose. The khaki linen was stated as 100% linen. The chart sent for a light pink request was 100% cotton, no 100% linen was available at that time, and the cream and beige were 50% linen.

**A common question:** How should I clean a tufted floor cushion in my kids' reading nook?

**The workshop's answer:** Wipe it gently with a cloth. A tufted cushion cannot go in the washing machine. If washing matters, the workshop can make it untufted, with removable covers that are machine washable.

**A common question:** Do the pillows in the photos come with the floor cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The small pillows are decorative and not included; the order covers the floor cushion only. Matching pillows can be made if you send sizes, quantity and color. Back cushions shown in bench photos are a separate item too.

> **Tailor's margin:** If you photograph a floor cushion, do it from knee height. From standing, every pouf looks thin; from low down you see its true thickness.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How many patterns belong in one kids' corner?

One strong one is enough. Let the striped pouf carry the pattern and choose plain pillows in different shapes and textures, such as a cloud or a star. Shape gives variety without a second set of lines.

### Is striped cotton a good choice for a playroom floor cushion?

It is soft and cheerful, but 100% cotton stripes stain more easily than tighter weaves, and they are for indoor use. Choose a removable zippered cover so it can be washed at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle.

### Why are the points of a star pouf filled so firmly?

Each point is filled firmly to the tip so it holds its shape when a child leans or sits on it. A soft tip would fold over, and the star would lose its outline.
