# A pink herringbone window seat that borrows from the patio

*Élodie reads a striped window seat on honey oak drawers and sorts out which outdoor habits belong indoors, and which should stay out on the patio.*

> **The quick answer:** A striped window seat cushion indoors can borrow three habits from outdoor cushions: an awning-scale stripe that reads from across the room, a non-slip base underneath, and a zipper turned to the wall. Keep the indoor comforts too: a woven herringbone cotton, a box edge cut flush with the drawer front, and pillows in sage and cream instead of more stripes.

## Pinned by Élodie

Five pins trace how the peonies, the sage and cream pillows, the unbroken front stripe and one black drawer pull hold this window together.

1. **peonies in stoneware**: Peonies at the window end echo the pink bands at full bloom.
2. **sage linen pillow**: Sage is pink's quiet complement and stops the seat tipping into sweetness.
3. **cream bouclé pillow**: Bouclé in the stripe's white adds texture without another color.
4. **pink stripe front band**: The zipper sits on the back edge against the wall, so nothing interrupts the stripe from the front.
5. **black drawer pull**: Warm oak flatters a cool-leaning pink more than white paint would.

## Stripes that came in from the awning

Lay the six gallery photographs beside this one and a family resemblance appears: sand awning stripes on a floating oak bench, navy awning stripes in a sunny corner, cobalt on white paneling, sunflower yellow in a tiled entry, black and white beside a cognac leather chair. Stripes like these were born outdoors, on awnings meant to be read from across a street. Here the same idea comes inside in peony pink.

The difference is in the hand. Up close, each pink band is a woven herringbone, and the weave catches the late-afternoon light at a slant, so the stripe looks soft where an awning would look hard. From the sofa it still reads as a clean line, and that is the first thing worth borrowing from the patio: a stripe scaled for the far side of the room.

The honey oak drawers matter as much as the cloth. A pink with a cool lean turns chalky against white paint; against warm oak it blushes. The black pulls are the only dark note in the picture, and they keep all that pink from floating away.

Each prop has a job. Peonies at the window end repeat the pink at full bloom. The sage linen pillow is pink's quiet complement and stops the seat tipping into sweetness. The cream bouclé pillow matches the stripe's pale ground and adds texture without adding a color. Let one color speak and the others listen.

Planning your own [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/)? Hold [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) samples in real daylight, and read the [stripe direction pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) before you decide which way the bands run. What color is the wood under your window, my friends?

## What to borrow from the patio, what to keep for the parlor

| Decision | Borrow from outdoor cushions | Keep from indoor cushions |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern | An awning-scale stripe that reads from across the room | A woven herringbone band you only notice up close |
| Underneath | A non-slip base so the seat stays square | Drawers that still open, so the cushion stops flush with the front |
| Zipper | Tucked on the back edge, out of sight | Against the wall, so the front stripe runs unbroken |
| Fabric | Outdoor fabrics when use will be heavy | Cotton herringbone for a softer hand in a sitting room |
| Pillows | Few, and easy to lift off | Sage linen and cream bouclé for color and touch |

## A 115.5-inch front, two posts, and a tape that had to bend

A buyer in the US sent a photo of an angled window seat with posts standing in the corners. The shop turned it into a template: 115.5 in (293 cm) along the front, 54.5 in (138 cm) along the back, 30.5 in (77.5 cm) deep, with 8.5 in (22 cm) straight ends.

One number refused to behave. The buyer had measured the slants at 39 in (99 cm), but front, back and depth said they could only be about 37.5 in (95 cm). The explanation was the posts: the tape had to bend around them, and 4 in (10 cm) had already come off the true 58.5 in (149 cm) back to clear them. Once that was said out loud, the template was confirmed, cut 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, with anti-slip material underneath.

That anti-slip layer is the patio habit I would borrow for every window seat. The other lesson is gentler: if posts or trim are in the way, say so, and let the maker work out the slants. The [notched cushion pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/notched-cushion-cutouts-posts-casings/) shows how.

## Buyer questions: templates, full sizes and rub counts

**A common question:** I've drawn my seat in CAD, and I also cut a full-size paper template. Can you work from either one?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A full-size template is the best starting point for a curved or odd shape: photograph it with the measurements written on, especially where each curve begins. From a CAD drawing, the shop redraws its own diagram and asks you to confirm it before quoting.

**A common question:** Will the cushion be made to the exact size of my bench, or do you take a little off?

**The workshop's answer:** The cushion is made to the full dimensions you send, with nothing deducted. For a dining bench, the shop advised matching the seat surface closely rather than adding an overhang.

**A common question:** My bench gets daily use. Do your fabrics have a double-rub rating above 50,000?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop has no official Wyzenbeek double-rub certificates, so it won't quote a number. The fabrics are upholstery grade and durability complaints are rare. For the heaviest use the outdoor fabrics are the toughest option, and velvet and other soft fabrics also wear well.

## On the cutting table: the peony window seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Window seat cushion, rectangle |
| Fabric | Pink and white herringbone stripe cotton |
| Edge | Box edge, cut flush with the drawer front |
| Piping | Self piping in the same stripe |
| Zipper | Back edge, against the wall |
| Base | Honey oak drawers with black pulls |
| Pillows | Sage linen and cream bouclé |
| Light | Soft late-afternoon sun through a garden window |
| Best for | A living-room window seat that should feel like spring all year |

> A striped window seat reads cleanest when the zipper sits on the back edge against the wall, so nothing interrupts the stripe along the front.

> **Tailor's margin:** With pink stripes, take one pillow in the complementary sage and one in the stripe's cream ground. Two pillows, zero new colors.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can an awning stripe look right on an indoor window seat?

Yes, when the scale suits the room. An awning-scale stripe reads as a clean line from across a sitting room, and a woven herringbone band softens it up close. If the stripe's color leans cool, set it on warm wood rather than white paint.

### Why add a non-slip base under a window seat cushion?

It helps a cushion stay square when people sit, turn and stand, a habit borrowed from outdoor seating. The angled window seat in the story above, cut 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, was made with anti-slip material underneath.

### How do I measure an angled window seat when posts block the tape?

Measure the front, the true back and the depth, and tell the maker where posts or trim interfere. The slants can be worked out from those numbers, which is how a bent-tape reading of 39 in (99 cm) became a correct 37.5 in (95 cm) slant.
