# A periwinkle stripe window seat cushion in a white alcove, and what keeps it from sliding

*A plaster ledge, a blue painting, one vase in a niche and a striped cushion that looks like it grew there. Pull up a chair; my notebook is open to the page on fastenings.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion on a smooth plaster or painted ledge stays put with an exact wall-to-wall fit plus an anti-slip underside, added on request in the personalization note. Ties need something to tie to, so they suit rails and slats, not a solid alcove. Put the zipper on the back edge, against the wall.

## Pinned by Rosa: five notes on a white alcove

Five pins, from the garden window on the left to the wool rug on the floor, each one a note in the margin of this room.

1. **Periwinkle stripe cushion**: A tall box edge adds real comfort to a thin plastered ledge.
2. **Blue abstract canvas**: The painting sets the blue and acts as a visual backrest centered over the seat.
3. **Niche with blue vase**: A recessed niche holds one object in the same blue, keeping the alcove uncluttered.
4. **Garden window**: Side light from the tall window keeps the white alcove from feeling flat.
5. **Chunky cream rug**: A textured rug below adds softness without adding color.

## What the alcove told me before I measured

This cushion fills the plastered alcove wall to wall, and that is the first fastening, before any tie or grip. A box cushion with no gap at either end has nowhere to go.

Look at the edge. The ledge itself is thin, a floating white shelf, and the tall box edge is what turns it into a real seat. The self piping keeps the outline soft, so the stripe does the talking.

The stripe is periwinkle and cream, and every blue in the room matches it: the abstract canvas in its white float frame, the glazed vase alone in the niche. When the colors sit that close, the cushion reads as part of a set, not one more thing somebody bought. There are no throw pillows. The painting, hung dead center over the seat, works as a visual backrest.

Side light from the tall window onto the greenery keeps all that white from going flat, and the chunky cream wool rug below adds softness without adding a single color. Bleached oak finishes the floor.

The idea to copy: take your stripe color from a piece of art you already own, and hang it centered over the seat. Hold the [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) swatches up beside the painting. More alcoves like this one live under [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/).

> **Tailor's margin:** Put fabric, piping color, anti-slip underside and corner ties in one personalization note, so the cutting table sees every request at once.

## From my notebook: what holds a cushion on a ledge like this

- ✓ Exact wall-to-wall fit. Give the alcove's inside length end to end; the workshop makes to your numbers and does not shorten them.
- ✓ Anti-slip underside. Write it in the personalization box; it is part of the cover, not a loose mat.
- ✓ Corner ties. Two corner ties are a common request, but only where there is a rail, slat or frame to tie around.
- ✓ Straps. These have been added free of charge when asked for.
- ✓ Zipper on the back edge. It faces the wall, where nobody sees it, and on a bench-style cushion it wraps the back corners so the foam slides out.
- ✓ One note for everything. Fabric, piping, grip and ties go in the same personalization note.

## The banquette that swapped its colors

One buyer wrote in about a U-shaped dining banquette: one 92 x 19 3/4 in (234 x 50 cm) seat plus two 39 1/2 x 25 1/2 in (100 x 65 cm) sections, all 3 in (7.5 cm) thick. Here's the clever bit. The seats were to be fabric 909 with 924 piping, and the backrests reversed, 924 with 909 piping.

They ordered through the listing and wrote the color combination in the note. That was all it took. Reversing body and piping colors between seat and back ties a banquette together, the way a family resemblance runs through cousins.

I tell this story on a page about fastenings because that same note box is where ties, an anti-slip underside and zipper placement get asked for. Write it all down once, and the cutting table sees every request together. Our [ties and non-slip notes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) list the options, and [zipper placement](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-zipper-placement/) covers the rest.

So tell me, what is your window seat made of: painted wood, plaster or stone?

## Buyer questions: grip, ties and a toddler at the table

**A common question:** Does the cushion come with an anti-slip bottom or ties?

**The workshop's answer:** Not by default, but the workshop can put anti-slip fabric on the underside or add ties, such as two corner ties, on request. Write it in the personalization box. Straps have been added free of charge.

**A common question:** We have a small dog and a toddler, and we'll be eating at the table on these. Which fabric should we pick?

**The workshop's answer:** The striped fabrics are 100% cotton: beautiful, but they stain more easily. For easy cleaning, choose the linen, soft or velvet ranges, all with removable, machine-washable covers. If the dog will be on the cushion constantly, the pet-friendly chart has extra-durable fabrics.

## On the cutting table: the alcove cushion, measured

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Window seat box cushion, wall to wall |
| Fabric | Striped cotton, periwinkle and cream |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Edge | Tall box edge over a thin plaster ledge |
| Fit | Inside length of the alcove, end to end, no deduction |
| Grip | Anti-slip underside, on request |
| Ties | Corner ties on request, where there is something to tie to |
| Zipper | Back edge, against the wall |
| Care note | Cotton stripes stain more easily than the easy-clean ranges |

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can ties hold a window seat cushion in a plaster alcove?

Not well, because a solid plastered ledge gives a tie nothing to wrap around. In an alcove like this, a tight wall-to-wall fit and an anti-slip underside do the holding. Save ties for seats with rails, slats or an open frame.

### Which edge of a window seat cushion should the zipper go on?

The back edge, the side that faces the wall, or the underside, where nobody sees it. On a bench-style cushion it wraps around the back corners so the foam slides out easily. If you can see the zipper, flip the cushion.

### How do you choose a stripe color for an all-white room?

Take it from something you already own. Here the periwinkle matches the blue canvas and the glazed vase in the niche, so the cushion reads as part of a set. Check the swatch beside the art in daylight before ordering.
