# A peach pentagon window seat cushion in an oak corner nook, and the hand-finishing that holds its angles

*A letter from Rosa about a corner someone had the good sense to clip, a piped edge that stays sharp, and the places she runs her thumb along before a cushion leaves the table.*

> **The quick answer:** A corner window seat cushion cut as a pentagon, with two long sides against the walls and the front corner clipped, is easier to climb into than a square one. The craft lives in that clipped corner: self piping and a box edge keep the angle sharp. Trace your corner on paper, mark where to clip it, and choose 2, 3, 4 or 5 in thickness.

## A letter about the corner that isn't there

Dear neighbor,

The first thing I noticed in this photograph wasn't the peach. It was the corner that isn't there.

My grandmother kept a square cushion on her porch glider, and every child in the family learned to climb onto it sideways, because the front point caught the backs of our knees. This nook solved that. The window seat cushion is a pentagon: two long sides pressed against the oak walls, and the front corner cut off at an angle so legs can swing down without a fight.

A clipped corner sounds simple. It isn't. That's where the hand-finishing lives. The box wall has to turn two shallow angles instead of one square one, and the piping has to follow without puckering. Here it's **self piping**, cut from the same peach performance weave, and it holds the angled edge as sharp as a pressed collar. Look at the pin on the angled side and you'll see the line never wobbles.

Peach against honey oak is warm on warm, and it glows next to the cool pines outside. Only **two cream linen pillows** sit in the back corner, where the walls meet and your back is best supported. The **ceramic mug** and **books** live on the window ledge, which acts as the side table and keeps the seat clear. The **oak paneling** does the decorating, and the **corner windows** onto the forest are the reason the nook exists, so the styling stays out of their way.

## Pinned by Rosa: the clipped corner and its company

Five pins, from the pentagon seat and its piped angle up to the pines in the window.

1. **Pentagon seat**: Clipping the front corner leaves room for legs to swing down.
2. **Angled piped edge**: Self piping holds the clipped corner sharp.
3. **Linen pillows**: Two rumpled linen pillows sit in the corner where the back is best supported.
4. **Mug and books**: The window ledge acts as a side table, keeping the cushion clear.
5. **Forest window**: Warm peach glows against the cool green and brown of the pines.

## Three finishing details I check with my thumb

When a corner cushion comes off the table, these are the places I run my thumb along:

- **The clipped angle.** The piping should turn each bend in one clean line, with no gathered fabric at the point. Self piping hides nothing, so it shows honest work.
- **The back corner.** Where the two long sides meet the walls, the box wall should stand straight so the cushion sits flush and doesn't pillow over the oak.
- **The cover.** It should come off. These covers are removable and wash at 86°F (30°C), with no tumble dryer.

Then the fabric. This one sits on our [performance and pet-friendly](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/) shelf, and I'll say what I always say: kids and dogs are the real quality control. A reading nook in a family house gets climbed into with muddy socks and cat paws, and a weave made for that holds up.

Before you order, trace your corner on paper and mark where you want the front clipped. Our [paper template](https://cushionguide.com/guides/paper-template-for-custom-cushion/) Pattern shows how, and the [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) collection has more corner shapes. Where would you clip yours?

## Ninety-six inches, cut into three

A buyer wrote in about a long window bench, 16 x 96 in (41 x 244 cm). One cushion that long turns into a two-person job every time you lift it to clean underneath or flip it over.

So they chose three cushions instead, each 16 x 32 in (41 x 81 cm), all in fabric #8, with no backrests. Three equal pieces butt together into one long seat, and any one of them lifts out with a single hand.

That's old porch sense in a new house. Split a long window bench into equal sections and it actually gets flipped and cared for. Our [one piece or two](https://cushionguide.com/guides/long-bench-cushion-one-piece-or-two/) Pattern works through the choice, and the [reading nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/) collection shows both ways.

## Buyer questions: foam or no foam, thickness choices, and a note that asked for three

**A common question:** Is the bench cushion listing only the cover, or does it come with foam inside?

**The workshop's answer:** It's the full cushion, with the foam insert included and ready to use. If you only need a cover, there's a separate zippered cover-only listing.

**A common question:** What thicknesses can I get for a trapezoid bay window seat, and does piping cost extra?

**The workshop's answer:** Thickness can be 2, 3, 4 or 5 in (5, 8, 10 or 13 cm). One bay seat the workshop quoted had a 107.5 in (273 cm) back edge, a 55 in (140 cm) front edge, two 32.5 in (83 cm) angled sides and a 23 in (58 cm) depth. Piping isn't an extra charge and can be a different color, and the cover is removable and washable at 86°F (30°C), with no tumble dryer.

**A common question:** My note asks for three cushions, but I only paid for one. What happens now?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop checks every order against its note before production. If the payment covers fewer pieces or a smaller size than you asked for, you get a message and a payment link for the difference before anything is cut. If you really wanted covers only, no extra payment is needed, since covers cost less than filled cushions.

> **Tailor's margin:** Split a 96 in window bench into three 16 x 32 in cushions. Equal pieces lift out one-handed, so they actually get flipped.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why cut a corner window seat cushion as a pentagon instead of a square?

A square fills the corner but leaves a point at the front that catches your knees. Clipping that point makes a pentagon: two sides on the walls, an angled front, and an easy way to climb in and swing your legs down.

### Does self piping work on an angled cushion edge?

Yes. Self piping is cut from the body fabric, so it outlines the angle in the same color. On this peach cushion it keeps the clipped edge reading as one sharp line instead of a soft, rounded corner.

### What cushion colors look good in an oak-paneled reading nook?

Warm tones like peach and terracotta pink sit well against honey oak and glow beside cool greens through the window. Keep the pillows quiet, cream linen here, so the wood and the view carry the room.
