# A palm leaf print window seat cushion on a storage chest, and how to keep it in place

*A cream chest under a garden window, a leafy cushion on top and a reading lamp in rattan. Before I read the photo, let's start where buyers start: the questions.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion on a storage chest can't use ties, because there is nothing to wrap them around, so it stays put by fit: cut flush to the chest top and as deep as the top rail. Put the zipper along the back edge, facing the wall, and keep the cushion easy to lift when the lid opens.

## Buyer questions first: a big bay, two small benches, leather welts

**A common question:** Can you make a really large bay window cushion in a fabric that stands up to sun?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, sun-resistant fabrics are available. For a trapezoid about 160 in (406 cm) long and 2 ft (61 cm) deep, the workshop suggested making it in two pieces.

**A common question:** I need two small bench cushions, 14 x 20 in, in a custom color. How do I set that up?

**The workshop's answer:** Choose the 14 x 20 in (36 x 51 cm) size in the listing and name your color; one buyer had a pair made in dried rose that way, quoted together as a set.

**A common question:** Do you have leather piping, something like cognac or saddle brown, for the welt?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Leather piping comes in three stock colors at no extra charge. Any other custom leather color can be made for a small added fee.

## Reading the palm leaf seat by lamplight

Pull up a chair, neighbor. This one is a sage-walled reading corner with a cream storage chest under a sash window, and a [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) in a palm leaf print on top. Green and teal leaves on ivory. With a garden outside and real plants all around, the print looks like part of the view rather than a loud pattern.

The props all play for the same team. A parlor palm in a woven basket repeats the printed leaves. A trailing plant in a macramé hanger carries them overhead. The rattan lamp throws warm evening light across all that cool green, and the oak shelf holds the reading. Self piping lets the leaves run right over the edge with no solid band to stop them. The cloth sits with our [cotton prints and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/).

## Pinned by Rosa: leaves, a lamp and a flush-cut chest

Five pins, from the printed palm leaves to the chest top the cushion is cut flush against.

1. **Palm leaf print**: Green and teal leaves on ivory look like part of the garden view.
2. **Rattan lamp**: Warm lamplight on rattan balances the cool greens.
3. **Parlor palm**: A real palm beside the seat repeats the printed leaves.
4. **Hanging plant**: Trailing leaves overhead carry the botanical theme upward.
5. **Cream storage chest**: The cushion is cut flush to the chest top, and its depth matches the top rail.

## Ties, grippy bottoms or a snug fit: fastening on a chest

Here's where folks get stuck. A seat with a frame or spindles can take ties. A chest can't. There's no rail to wrap a tie around, and you open that lid every time you want a blanket. So this cushion holds by fit: flush to the chest top, with its depth matched to the top rail. Nothing hangs over to catch a knee or a sleeve.

The zipper is the other half. On a seat against a wall, run it along the back edge so it faces the wall; [zipper placement](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-zipper-placement/) walks through the choices. If a cushion still wanders, [ties versus a non-slip base](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) has the fixes, and [cushions on hinged lids](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) covers the lifting.

What does your window seat sit on, legs or a lid?

## Ten feet of banquette, and two pieces nobody expected

A buyer in the US ordered seat and back cushions for a 10 ft (305 cm) built-in banquette with side bolsters. After re-measuring, they held the seat depth to 22 in (56 cm), because 24 in (61 cm) would have hung over by 2 in (5 cm).

Then the stacking math. The seat was 4 in (10 cm) thick and the backrest 16 in (41 cm) high, 20 in (51 cm) stacked, so the back came down to 15 in (38 cm), plus two side bolsters. The cushions shipped in separate parcels. When the boxes were opened, the long cushions were two pieces of 5 ft (152 cm) each; the buyer had expected each one to run the full 10 ft.

Say whether a length is per piece or the whole run, and get the piece count in writing before anybody cuts.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a long banquette order, write whether 10 ft means each cushion or the whole run; one word in the note saves a remake.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a window seat cushion on a blanket chest have ties?

Not in a useful way. Ties need a rail, spindle or frame to wrap around, and a chest has a solid lid that opens often. A snug fit, flush to the top and as deep as the rail, keeps the cushion in place instead.

### Which edge should the zipper sit on for a seat against a wall?

The back edge, facing the wall. It stays out of sight, and you can unzip the cover without dragging the cushion far. On a seat seen from both sides, a zipper on the underside is the tidier choice.

### Does a botanical print suit a reading nook?

It does when the window looks onto greenery. Green and teal leaves on ivory repeat the view, so the print reads as part of the garden. Echo it with one or two real plants and keep the walls a quiet green like sage.
