# Orange palm-print chair cushions with ties, and where the money should go

*Maggie reads a two-piece patio chair set in burnt orange and white and keeps a ledger: what's worth paying for on an outdoor dining chair, and what isn't.*

> **The quick answer:** On outdoor chair cushions with ties, spend on the fit, the fabric and the ties, and save where the price already covers it: same-color piping costs nothing extra. For a chair with a gap between seat and back, two separate pieces, each tied on, fit better than one hinged cushion that fights the frame.

## The ledger: spend here, save there

| Line item | Spend or save | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Exact measurements | Spend time | A wrong size means a remake; a tape-measure photo costs nothing |
| Outdoor acrylic cloth | Spend | The fabric is the part that faces sun and rain every day |
| Ties on seat and back | Spend | They keep two pieces from creeping on smooth metal |
| Same-color piping | Save | Already included, at no extra charge |
| Extra thickness | Save | Thickness drives price, and a dining seat needs support more than loft |
| A paused project | Save | An order can be held or changed instead of cancelled |

## Adding to a set: match the cushion you already own

A returning buyer in the US turned an earlier velvet floor-seating order into a whole reading lounge along a long window wall: 3 seats, 7 backrests and 4 cylinder hand rests.

She did her homework, and I'd hire her tomorrow. She drew the layout with sizes and colors. She tested a 10 in (25 cm) bolster by wrapping an old one up to that size. She asked for the window-side backrests at 10 in high so they'd clear the sill. Before production she switched everything to pink velvet with gray bolsters, and she asked for photos before dispatch.

Then the clever bit. Her first order had come out slightly different in width from the spec, so she sent tape-measure photos of the real cushion, 33 in (84 cm) including trim, and asked for the new pieces to match that. Hand rests: 23.6 in (60 cm) long, 10 in across.

Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have. That's my usual line, and adding to a set is the one exception: the cushion you already own is the measurement.

## Reading the chair: two pieces and an orange outline

A gray aluminum dining armchair with an open back, dear, is the kind of chair that punishes a one-piece cushion. There's a gap between seat and back, and a hinged cushion would bridge it and pull. So this set is two pieces: a boxed seat that fits between the arms and a back cushion that covers the full chair back.

Each piece has its own solid orange ties, so neither creeps on smooth metal. That's money well spent, because a cushion that keeps sliding is a cushion nobody uses.

The print is burnt orange palms on white outdoor acrylic, and the piping repeats the orange on every edge. On gray metal that cord gives both pieces a crisp outline you can read from across the patio. Piping this visible has to run dead straight, so check it in the pre-shipment photo.

The setting stays clean on purpose. Soft indirect daylight, a plain white wall, a flagstone floor. A weathered teak table softens the modern metal, and its silvery wood makes the orange look warmer by comparison. A patio set this graphic doesn't need props.

Where would I save? Not on the cloth and not on the ties. Save on thickness a dining seat doesn't need, and remember that same-color welt is already in the price. The [chair cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/) atlas and the [outdoor acrylic shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) cover the rest, and the [tie placement pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-tie-placement-chairs-swings/) is worth ten minutes before you draw. How many chairs are you dressing this season?

## Pinned by Maggie: the two-piece set

Five pins: the back cushion, the boxed seat, the ties, the orange piping and the teak table beside them.

1. **Back cushion**: The back cushion covers the full chair back and is piped on every edge.
2. **Seat cushion**: A separate boxed seat fits between the arms.
3. **Orange ties**: Solid orange ties at seat and back keep both pieces from slipping.
4. **Orange piping**: The piping repeats the print color for a crisp outline on gray metal.
5. **Teak table**: Weathered teak softens the modern chair.

## Buyer questions: ottomans, piping and second thoughts

**A common question:** Do you sell the ottoman or footrest by itself, matching my sofa color?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The ottoman measures 39.4 x 39.4 in (100 x 100 cm), and the shop sends a custom purchase link in the matching color.

**A common question:** Is piping an extra charge?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Same-color piping is free, and quoted prices already include it.

**A common question:** Can I cancel a custom order if I don't need it right now?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Before production, the order can be cancelled and refunded to the original payment method. The shop can also keep the payment on hold until you're ready, and if you only need to change something, it can update the order without cancelling.

## On the cutting table: the patio chair set

| | |
|---|---|
| Pieces | Separate seat and back cushions |
| Fabric | Burnt orange and white palm print, outdoor acrylic |
| Edge | Box |
| Piping | Contrast, burnt orange, on every edge |
| Fastening | Solid orange ties on seat and back |
| Chair | Gray aluminum dining armchair with an open back |
| Setting | Flagstone patio beside a weathered teak table |
| Best for | Outdoor dining chairs a single hinged cushion won't fit |

> Same-color piping on a chair cushion with ties costs nothing extra, so put the budget into the fit, the outdoor fabric and the ties.

> **Tailor's margin:** When adding cushions to an existing set, send a tape-measure photo of the finished cushion, trim included, and order to that number.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why use separate seat and back cushions on an open-back chair?

Because the gap between seat and back would make a single hinged cushion bridge and pull. Two pieces, each with its own ties, sit flat where they belong and can be turned, cleaned or replaced one at a time.

### Where should the ties sit on a two-piece patio chair cushion set?

Wherever each piece meets a frame rail it can grip. Both the seat and the back need their own ties; write the exact positions on your drawing and check them in the pre-shipment photo, since ties are easy to forget.

### Is contrast piping worth it on a palm-print outdoor cushion?

When the cord repeats the print's strongest color, it earns its place: the burnt orange here outlines both pieces against gray metal without adding a new color. Same-color piping is included at no charge, so ask about contrast cord when you request a quote.
