# A two-fabric sunbed cushion for long afternoons beside an above-ground pool

*No patio, no paving, just a lawn, a steel lounger and a pool with a ladder. The cushion does the rest, and the way its two fabrics are split is what makes it good for a long sit.*

> **The quick answer:** For a sunbed cushion you'll sit on for hours, split the fabrics: print on the backrest, a plain matching color on the seat. The seat takes wet swimsuits and sunscreen, so the solid hides wear while the print stays upright where you see it. Keep it slim on a light steel lounger, and a long pool bench cushion can still be one flexible piece.

The bright color lifts a gray frame and a gray house.")

## Pinned by Callum: leaf print, plain seat, ladder, hose and steel

Five pins run from the printed backrest down to the steel frame, and each one has something to say about spending a whole afternoon out here.

1. **Leaf-print backrest**: A cream palm-leaf print on orange brings a holiday feel to a plain back garden.
2. **Solid orange seat**: The plain seat matches the print's ground, so the two parts look like one set.
3. **Pool ladder**: An above-ground pool gets its own sunbed without any paving.
4. **Garden hose**: Everyday details keep the scene real: a family backyard, not a resort.
5. **Steel-tube frame**: Gray steel is neutral, so the bold orange cushion carries all the color.

## Why the leaves stay on the backrest

Everything in this backyard is gray or green. Gray siding, a gray steel frame, a gray pool wall, chain-link and mown grass. Somebody had to bring the sun, and burnt orange outdoor acrylic is about as sunny as a fabric gets.

Look where the print went. Cream palm leaves sit on the backrest, upright, right where your eye lands when you step out the back door. The seat is a solid burnt orange cut to match the print's ground, so the two parts read as one set, not two cushions that met at a yard sale.

That split is a comfort call as much as a looks call. The seat is where wet swimsuits, sunscreen and a dripping towel land. A plain color forgives all three. The backrest only has to hold your shoulders and your paperback.

## Made for the long sit, not the quick dry-off

A lounger you use for ten minutes after a swim can get by with a thin pad. One you read on all afternoon needs a backrest that rises with the frame and a seat that stays put at the hinge. This is a seat-and-backrest cushion in two sections that follow the steel hinge, with a [box edge](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#boxed-edge) and [self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) in the same orange.

It's slim, and that's right for this frame. A light steel-tube lounger gets dragged across the lawn to chase the sun, and the cushion gets carried in when the sky turns. Rain doesn't negotiate.

The props keep it honest. The pool ladder and the little timber step deck say there's no paving here, only grass, and the lounger still becomes the spot everyone wants. The hose coiled on the siding says family backyard, not resort. You'll find other frames in [chaise and sunbed cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/chaise-and-sunbed-cushions/), more setups in [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/), and the cloth itself in [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/).

What do you do longest on yours, friend: read, nap or keep an eye on the kids in the water?

## One cushion, two or five? A 118 in pool bench

One buyer wrote in about a poolside bench that seats five, 118 x 20 in (300 x 50 cm). They wanted it thick and waterproof, 5 in (13 cm), and couldn't decide between one long cushion, two pieces split three seats and two, or five separate pads.

The workshop's answer turned on storage, not looks. One long piece can be folded or rolled for the off-season without creasing or damage, because the foam is flexible. Production was quoted at 3-5 days, with 3-5 days of shipping after that.

So choose by the shed, not the bench. If you have a shelf for a roll, one piece gives a long, gap-free seat for anybody stretching out. If you need to hand a cushion to five people at once, cut five. There's more in [one piece or two](https://cushionguide.com/guides/long-bench-cushion-one-piece-or-two/) and in our [winter storage notes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-care-winter-storage/).

## Buyer questions: a floor cushion, boat velcro and a U-shaped van seat

**A common question:** Could you make a Japanese-style floor cushion for outdoors, in white Sunbrella, with the zipper along the long side?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A custom outdoor floor cushion, for example 32.25 x 44 in (82 x 112 cm), can be made in a white outdoor fabric from the workshop's own charts (it doesn't stock Sunbrella) with the zipper along the 44 in side. The zippered outdoor version is made without tufting, but send a photo of the edge you want, such as French seams or hand-finished sides, and the workshop will copy it.

**A common question:** My boat cushions already have hook velcro on them. Can new covers be made to line up with it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the exact length, width and thickness of each cushion, and fitted covers are made with the soft loop side sewn to the bottom to meet the hook strips you have. Photos and a simple sketch showing where the strips sit help everything line up.

**A common question:** We have U-shaped seating in our campervan. Can you make new seat cushions for it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, U-shaped seating is made regularly. Send a drawing with every run of the U, the depth and the thickness you want, plus a photo of the space.

> **Tailor's margin:** A 118 in (300 cm) pool bench cushion can be one piece: flexible foam folds or rolls for winter without creasing.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why put a print on the back of a lounger cushion and a solid on the seat?

The seat takes the wet swimsuits, sunscreen and most of the sitting, so a plain color hides wear. Matching that solid to the print's ground keeps the two sections reading as one set, and the print stays upright where the eye lands.

### Can a long outdoor bench cushion be stored folded over winter?

Yes. A 118 x 20 in (300 x 50 cm) pool bench cushion was made as one piece because its flexible foam can be folded or rolled for storage without creasing or damage. Choose one piece, two, or one per seat by the storage space you have.

### What should I measure for a two-part chaise lounge cushion?

Measure the seat section and the backrest section separately, each from the hinge to its end, then the width across the frame and the thickness you want. A photo of the lounger with the tape in the shot shows where the hinge falls.
