# An olive aztec outdoor bench cushion, read from the lawn and from the seat

*Callum starts with buyer questions, then walks back across the grass to show which details on a teak bench cushion carry ten feet and which only matter up close.*

> **The quick answer:** On a long outdoor bench cushion, a large print and a straight box edge carry from ten feet away, while self piping and a snug end fit only show up close. This olive and white aztec acrylic works because the diamond is big enough to read across the lawn and the cushion runs the full length of the teak top with no overhang.

The olive print picks up the lawn and the painted cladding at once.")

## Three outdoor bench questions before we walk the lawn

**A common question:** My nook is really long. Can one cushion run the whole length?

**The workshop's answer:** Very long cushions are made in pieces. A 32.5 x 197 in (83 x 500 cm) nook cushion in beige velvet with black piping was planned in 3 pieces, and a 100 in (254 cm) back cushion could be split in two.

**A common question:** The size calculator on the listing gives me a strange result for my long bench cushion. Which ranges should I pick?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the ranges the other way round, for example 31 in (79 cm) as the width and 96 in (244 cm) as the length, so the listing calculates correctly, then type your exact size in the personalization box. A 96 x 31 x 5 in (244 x 79 x 13 cm) linen cushion with contrast piping and a non-slip base was quoted that way.

**A common question:** I have upholstery fabric I love. Can I send it for my cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, you can mail your own fabric. First send a direct photo of it, not a screenshot, and say what the material is (velvet, linen and so on) so the shop can quote and work out how much you need.

## From the far edge of the grass

Stand at the far edge of the lawn first. From there you see three things: a long olive block on a honey teak bench, a silver lantern at one end, two pots of white geraniums. That's all the eye takes in at ten feet. Good. That's the test.

The print passes. A big aztec diamond on a white ground reads as pattern from across the grass. A smaller print would blur into texture, olive mush on a gray deck. On a long plain bench, go big.

The color passes too. Olive sits halfway between the mown lawn and the sage cladding of the summerhouse, so the cushion belongs to both. The white ground picks up the geraniums. Teak warms the olive, which would look flat against gray boards alone, like the sea under low cloud. The sky in this photo is overcast, and the cushion still holds its color. That's the light to judge an outdoor fabric in.

Now walk up and sit. The close-up details show themselves. [Self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) along the front, cut from the same cloth, keeps the edge crisp where legs brush it. The box edge holds a straight line. The cushion runs the full length of the teak top with no overhang, so the bench keeps its clean line against the French doors.

Props are few and grouped at one end. Lantern for the evening. Geraniums for the white. The rest of the bench is left to the print.

For a deck like this, start with [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) and the [outdoor fabric pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-fabric-acrylic-olefin-polyester/). Sizes live under [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/). Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does a ten-foot view. What does your bench look like from the far side of the yard, friend?

## What the bench cushion shows at 10 ft, and up close

| Detail | From the lawn | From the bench |
|---|---|---|
| Print scale | A large diamond reads as pattern | The white ground and weave show |
| Edge | A straight box edge draws one clean line | Self piping keeps the front crisp where legs brush it |
| Length | Full run of the teak top, no overhang | Ends stop square where the teak stops |
| Color | Olive sits between lawn and sage cladding | Honey teak legs warm the olive |
| Props | Lantern and pots grouped at one end | A candle for evening light, no extra color |

## Pinned by Callum: the teak summerhouse bench

Five pins: the front piping, the big diamond, the lantern, the white geraniums and the teak legs that keep the olive from going flat.

1. **Self piping at the front**: Olive-and-white piping from the same cloth keeps the edge crisp where legs brush against it.
2. **Large aztec diamond**: A big diamond suits a long plain bench; a smaller print would read as texture from across the lawn.
3. **Lantern with candle**: A silver lantern adds evening light without bringing in another color.
4. **White geraniums**: White flowers echo the white ground of the fabric and tie the cushion to the planting.
5. **Teak bench legs**: Honey teak warms the olive, which would look flat against gray boards alone.

## Two built-in benches, 80 and 139.25 inches long

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about replacement cushions for two built-in benches in a community space. One was 80 in (203 cm) long, the other 139.25 in (354 cm), both 22.5 in (57 cm) deep. They wanted tufted velvet.

The backs were worked out as 23.5 in (60 cm) minus the thickness of the seat cushion, because a back cushion rests on the seat, not on the bench. The long run could be split into two equal sections of about 69.6 in (177 cm).

In the end the group took a donated couch instead, and still wrote kindly about the cushions. Fair enough. Two lessons stayed on the workbench. Subtract the seat thickness from the total back height. And split a very long run into equal pieces, so the join lands dead center, where it reads as a decision from ten feet away rather than an accident. The [one piece or two pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/long-bench-cushion-one-piece-or-two/) goes further.

## On the cutting table: the summerhouse bench

| Fabric | Outdoor acrylic, olive and white aztec diamond |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Piping | Self piping from the same cloth |

| Props | Silver lantern and two pots of white geraniums |
| Best for | A deck or porch bench seen from the lawn |

> **Tailor's margin:** Judge an outdoor bench cushion print from the far side of the yard on an overcast day. If it still reads as pattern, the scale is right.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How big should the print be on a long outdoor bench cushion?

Big enough to read as pattern from wherever you usually see the bench. On this long teak bench a large aztec diamond holds up from across the lawn, while a small print would blur into texture and make the seat look muddy from a distance.

### Does a teak bench cushion need to overhang the front of the slats?

No. This cushion runs the full length of the teak top with no overhang, which keeps the bench's clean line against the doors. Cushions are made to the full dimensions you send, so measure the seat surface itself.

### How are back cushions sized on a built-in outdoor bench?

Start with the total height available for the back, then subtract the thickness of the seat cushion, because the back rests on the seat. In one built-in project the backs were 23.5 in (60 cm) minus the seat thickness.

### What cushion color suits a teak bench on a gray deck?

Pick a color that sits between your planting and your paintwork. Here olive bridges the lawn and the sage cladding, and teak legs warm it. On gray boards alone, a cool olive can look flat.
