# An off-white corduroy star floor cushion in a pale yellow nursery, read at its ten points

*Harlan reads a pale corduroy star in a yellow nursery the way an old upholsterer reads any piece: at the points, where the hand-finishing tells on itself.*

> **The quick answer:** A star floor cushion in off-white corduroy suits a nursery because the pale cord stays calm while toys, prints and bedding carry the color. Judge the hand-finishing at the points: the self piping should turn each inner and outer corner cleanly, and the wale should run one way across the top. Unpack it within a few days of arrival.

## Swatch strip: a pale star in a yellow room

- Off-white corduroy — #EEE8DA — The star itself. The quietest thing on the floor.
- Pale nursery yellow — #F2E4A6 — The walls. Warm enough that the cream reads soft, not stark.
- Powder blue — #A7C0D8 — The star pillow, sampled from the crib plaid.
- Cloud gray — #B8BBBE — The cloud pillow, the second note taken from the bedding.
- Blue-gray plaid — #7E8FA0 — The crib blanket every pillow color came from.
- Tiger orange — #DD7A2C — One bright toy on the dresser, enough for that whole side.

## Where a star tells the truth: the points

An old man at my first shop told me you judge a chair from underneath and a cushion at its corners. A star has ten corners, five out and five in, so it tells the truth ten times.

This one is off-white corduroy with a box edge, self-piped in the same cord, set on the floor of a pale yellow nursery. The piping runs around every point. At the outer tips it should turn tight and clean. At the inner corners it should settle into the angle without a pucker. When those ten turns are right, the rest of the sewing usually is too. A seam is a promise, and the corners are where you check it.

Then the wale. The ribs of a corduroy should run one way across the whole top, so the star takes the light evenly. In soft daylight a pale cream shows that texture plainly, which is why a light cord is an honest fabric: it hides nothing.

Take your time with it, my friend. Run a thumb along the piping at a point. You'll feel whether it was hurried.

**Why the room stays pale.** The color lives in the toys: an orange tiger plush on the white dresser, a rainbow ring stacker on the floor, a framed rocket print, a polar bear sketch. The blue star pillow and the gray cloud pillow were pulled from the blue-gray plaid in the white crib, and a blue cloud pillow in the crib answers them, so the reading corner and the crib look planned on the same afternoon. A white ceiling canopy softens the corner, and the white bookcase with its books and pencil cup gives the star its job.

## Pinned by Harlan

Five pins, from the off-white cord star to the one bright tiger on the dresser.

1. **Off-white cord star**: The quietest possible base, so toys and posters carry the color.
2. **Blue star pillow**: Pulled from the blue in the crib plaid to link reading corner and crib.
3. **Plaid crib blanket**: The pillow colors were sampled from this bedding.
4. **Tiger plush**: One bright toy on the dresser is enough color for the whole side of the room.
5. **Ring stacker**: Primary colors at floor level balance the pale pouf.

## Three rolls, one box, and a set of bars that came later

A buyer in the US had just moved in and wanted to turn the ottoman of their floor couch into a proper seat, the way they'd seen it in a review photo. The ottoman was 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm), and they paid to add a backrest to it.

They asked for bars in something other than chrome. Chrome is the only finish, and the workshop said so. The order shipped the next day.

Then it arrived the way big orders do: three rolls and one box, on different days. The chrome bars were missing and had to be sent again. The buyer's word for everything else about the couch was fabulous.

The lesson belongs to the shop as much as the buyer. Tell people how many parcels to expect. A split delivery nobody mentioned looks like a missing order. Finishing isn't only needlework; it's telling a person what's coming.

## Buyer questions: bars, sales, and a box kept till Christmas

**A common question:** Once the metal bars are put together, where do they actually go?

**The workshop's answer:** There are four bar frames: two for the sides and two for the back. They stand on the floor under and behind the backrests to keep the large backrests from tipping over. They don't attach to the couch, and nothing else needs assembling.

**A common question:** Will you have a Black Friday sale, or can you do a better price?

**The workshop's answer:** No extra Black Friday discount is planned; the workshop says its prices are already as low as they go, with small margins and high platform fees. If the price does drop, it refunds the difference. It does sometimes accept offers, hold a sale price for a few days on request, or match a repeat buyer's earlier price through the Make an Offer button, which works from a computer browser.

**A common question:** Does it come full size or compressed, and can I leave it boxed until Christmas?

**The workshop's answer:** It ships vacuum-packed, so the box is much smaller than the cushion. Take it out of the packaging within a few days of arrival, because long compression can damage the foam. If it would sit unopened until Christmas, order closer to the day you'll give it.

## On the cutting table: the cream cord star

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Star floor cushion (star pouf) |
| Fabric | Off-white corduroy |
| Piping | Self piping around all ten corners |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Wale | Ribs running one way across the top |
| Pillows | Blue star and gray cloud, sampled from the crib plaid |
| Setting | Pale yellow nursery with white dresser, bookcase and crib |
| Arrives | Vacuum-packed; unpack within a few days |
| Best for | Nurseries, reading corners and gender-neutral kids' rooms |

> Judge a star floor cushion at its ten corners: if the piping turns each point cleanly and the corduroy ribs run one way, the sewing was not hurried.

> **Tailor's margin:** Unpack a vacuum-packed star pouf within a few days of delivery. Long compression can damage foam, so order closer to the day it's needed.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How can I tell if a star floor cushion is well made?

Look at the points. The piping should turn each outer tip tightly and sit into each inner corner without puckering, and the corduroy ribs should run one direction across the top. Uneven turns at the points usually mean hurried sewing.

### What colors go with a pale yellow nursery?

Keep the big pieces pale, like an off-white cord star, and let toys, prints and bedding bring the color. Sample pillow colors from the crib blanket, here powder blue and cloud gray from a blue-gray plaid, so the room reads as one plan.

### Can the metal bars of a floor couch come in black or brass?

No. The bars come in chrome only; one buyer who asked for another finish was told so before the order shipped. The bars stand beside and behind the backrests without attaching, so they sit mostly out of sight.
