# An off-white corduroy lumbar pillow, tone-on-tone on a walnut bed

*There is barely a color in this photograph, and that is its lesson. Ribs, sheen and one walnut headboard do all the work a palette usually does.*

> **The quick answer:** An off-white corduroy lumbar pillow stands out on white bedding through texture alone: fine ribs catch side light that flat linen-look shams don't. Keep the lumbar lowest and in front, the corduroy square behind it and the euro shams tallest at the back, and let one dark element, here a walnut headboard, anchor the pale stack.

## Four whites and one walnut

Look closely, my friends, and you will count four whites: the duvet, two cream euro shams, a corduroy square and the lumbar in front. The lumbar is off-white fine-wale corduroy, knife-edged, with no piping at all. Only its ribs keep it from dissolving into the duvet.

The shams are a flat linen-look weave in cream, half a step warmer. Put a flat cloth beside a ribbed one in nearly the same shade and the ribs suddenly show. That is the whole trick of this bed.

The walnut headboard is the anchor; without that dark band the pale stack would drift away. A small brass sconce with a white shade adds the only warm metal, and the books on a walnut nightstand repeat the wood. Dried eucalyptus in a white vase is the one true color, gray-green and kept to the side. Let one color speak and the others listen.

## Pinned by Élodie

Five marks on the bed, from the brass sconce down to the ribbed lumbar.

1. **Off-white corduroy lumbar**: Fine ribs are the only thing separating this lumbar from the white duvet.
2. **Corduroy square**: A ribbed square in the center repeats the lumbar texture.
3. **Flat cream sham**: A flat linen-look weave beside the corduroy makes the ribs easier to see.
4. **Eucalyptus stems**: Gray-green eucalyptus is the only color, kept small and to the side.
5. **Brass sconce**: A small warm metal accent above a very pale stack.

## Low in front, tall at the back

A pillow stack works like a seat and its backrest: each layer sits lower than the one behind it. Here the euro shams stand tallest against the walnut, the square sits in the middle, and the [lumbar pillow](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/lumbar-pillows/) lies lowest across the front, so you see a slice of every layer.

Depth matters as much as height. A knife-edge lumbar is slim, so the stack doesn't creep toward the foot of the bed and steal the sleeping space. Save the ribbed [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) for the pieces nearest the window; raking morning light is what shows the wale. Sizes for a set are in [throw and lumbar pillows to match your seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/guides/matching-throw-pillows-lumbar-pillows/).

Which way does the window light fall across your bed?

## Seven covers for foam that was already there

A buyer in the US had foam she was happy with: one bench cushion at 67 x 15 x 2 in (170 x 38 x 5 cm) and six dining chair cushions at 18.5 x 16 x 2 in (47 x 41 x 5 cm). She wanted new covers only, all in the M-12 stripe, with piping and ties.

She sent photos of the old cushions and a small sketch showing which side the ties go on. The order went through the covers-only listing, and the set shipped once all seven covers were finished.

Notice the proportion. Two inches on a bench only 15 in deep keeps the pad slim against the seat; a much thicker one would sit on that narrow bench like a loaf of bread.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** If I order from the covers-only listing, do the foam and the metal frame come with it?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Covers-only means the fabric covers alone, with no foam filling and no metal support bars. Both can be quoted as extras, but if you want a finished floor sofa, order the filled listing. The listing description was rewritten after buyers mixed the two up.

**A common question:** Could you add a neck roll that matches my mattress or daybed cover?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Neck rolls are cut to any length and diameter in the same fabric, and the filling comes with them. One was made 31 1/2 in long and 8 5/8 in (22 cm) across to go with a 31 1/2 x 78 3/4 in (80 x 200 cm) mattress cover.

> **Tailor's margin:** When re-covering foam you already own, sketch where the ties go. One drawing keeps six chair covers from arriving with ties on the wrong side.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I make an all-white bed of pillows look layered instead of flat?

Mix textures in almost the same shade. A ribbed corduroy lumbar and square against flat linen-look shams gives the eye edges to follow, and a dark headboard behind keeps the pale stack from floating.

### Is fine-wale corduroy a good choice for a lumbar pillow?

Yes. Fine wales are narrow ribs that catch side light without looking bulky, so a lumbar reads as texture rather than pattern. It shows best on a bed that gets window light from one side.

### Why keep the only color in a white bedroom on the nightstand?

In a tone-on-tone bed, any color becomes the focal point. A small bunch of gray-green eucalyptus to one side gives the eye somewhere to rest without breaking up the white stack in the middle.
