# Oatmeal window seat cushion with wedge ends: getting the thickness right

*Rosa reads a symmetrical city alcove, then tells the story of a seat that arrived half as thick as promised, and why the order form is the only note production reads.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion should be thick enough to sit on comfortably yet low enough to keep the sill usable, and its thickness belongs in the written order. This oatmeal box cushion with taupe piping uses triangular wedges at both ends instead of a long backrest. One buyer's 23 1/4 in deep seat arrived 2 in thick, not 4 in, because thickness lived only in a chat.

![Oatmeal linen-look window seat cushion with taupe piping, triangular wedge backrests at both ends, two square pillows](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/oatmeal-window-seat-cushion-triangle-wedge-ends-1600.webp "Triangular wedges at each end turn a plain window ledge into a perch you can lean on from either side.")

## Pinned by Rosa: a perch built in pairs

Five pins across the alcove, from the wedge at the left end to the greige cabinet doors underneath.

1. **Triangular end wedge**: Wedges at each end act as armrests and let two people sit facing each other.
2. **Taupe piping on seat**: A piping shade just darker than the fabric gives definition without contrast.
3. **Matching square pillow**: The pillow repeats the wedge piping, so every piece looks like part of one order.
4. **Books and mug on the sill**: Keeping the center clear leaves room to stretch out with legs up.
5. **Greige cabinet base**: A cabinet color close to the fabric makes the whole nook feel built in.

## Thickness, depth and a sill you can still reach

Pull up a chair, because this alcove taught me something about proportion I keep repeating to anybody who'll listen.

Everything here comes in pairs. The same triangular wedge at each end, the same oatmeal square pillow beside it, the same taupe piping on every edge, and the window dead center between them. The wedges stand in for a long backrest. You sit sideways in a window seat, back against one wedge and feet toward the other, and two people can sit facing each other for a chat. A full backrest would only block the view you came for.

Now the thickness. The seat cushion sits low enough that the books and cream mug on the sill stay within easy reach, and the wedges rise above it like the arms of a chair. Make the seat too thick and the sill becomes a shelf you reach up to. Make it too thin on a deep ledge and you feel the board underneath by the second chapter.

The taupe welt, only a few shades darker than the oatmeal, lets you read that line from across the room without shouting about it. The greige cabinet doors below sit so close to the fabric color that the whole nook looks built in one go.

What does your ledge measure from front to back, neighbor? Write it down with the height to the sill before you pick a thickness. Our [window seat thickness Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-thickness/) and the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) do the arithmetic, and more sideways perches live among our [reading nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/).

## Two orders, one window

| | First order | Reorder |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 79 1/4 x 11 in (201 x 28 cm) | 79 1/4 x 23 1/4 in (201 x 59 cm) |
| Fabric | Linen-look L-14 | Lighter linen-look L-05 |
| Piping | Pink, L-72 | Pink, L-72 |
| Thickness asked | 4 in (10 cm) | 4 in (10 cm), confirmed only by message |
| Thickness received | 4 in (10 cm) | 2 in (5 cm) |

## Half as thick as she was told

A buyer in the US ordered a long window seat cushion, 79 1/4 x 11 in (201 x 28 cm), in linen-look L-14 with pink L-72 piping. It arrived in about 10 to 14 days, it was lovely, and it was too narrow. She'd typed the wrong width.

So she reordered at 79 1/4 x 23 1/4 in (201 x 59 cm) in the lighter L-05 with the same piping, and asked by message whether it would be 4 in (10 cm) thick like the first. The workshop said yes. It came 2 in (5 cm) thick. Production had followed the order description, and the description never mentioned thickness.

Two inches on a seat nearly two feet deep feels like a folded blanket. The lesson is hard and simple at once: production reads the order, not the chat. Put every number, thickness first, into the personalization note. Our [personalization note Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-personalization-note/) shows exactly what to write.

## On the cutting table: the wedge-end seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Box-edge window seat cushion with two triangular end wedges |
| Fabric | Oatmeal linen-look |
| Piping | Contrast, taupe, a few shades darker than the fabric |
| Extras | Two oatmeal square pillows with matching piping |
| Setting | Symmetrical city window alcove over greige cabinets |
| Thickness | Written into the order note, never only in messages |
| Best for | Reading nooks you sit in sideways |

## Buyer questions: sizes, lengths and corners

**A common question:** The size dropdown says one thing and the exact size I typed says another. Which one do you make?

**The workshop's answer:** The exact size you typed. The dropdown only picks the size range and sets the price; production cuts to the Exact Size field. Choose 38 to 40 in from the dropdown but type 18 x 20, and the cushion is cut at 18 x 20 in (46 x 51 cm). Double-check the typed size before checkout.

**A common question:** Can a really long cushion be made as one piece instead of two?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop has agreed to single pieces of 82 in, 104 in, 111 1/2 in and 118 in (3 m). For very long runs it may suggest two pieces, such as two of 59 in (1.5 m), because they're easier to handle and ship, but one piece is always an option.

**A common question:** For a corner bench, do I get one L-shaped cushion or two?

**The workshop's answer:** Two separate cushions that meet at the corner, lined up flush edge to edge. The covers come off more easily that way, and the fit is cleaner.

> Production reads the order, not the chat: a window seat cushion confirmed at 4 in by message arrived 2 in thick because the order note left it out.

> **Tailor's margin:** Write the thickness into the order note every time. A 4 in promise made only in chat arrived as a 2 in window seat pad.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a cushion be on a deep window seat?

Thick enough that you never feel the ledge, low enough that the sill stays within reach. The buyer here wanted 4 in (10 cm) on a seat 23 1/4 in (59 cm) deep, and was right to object when a 2 in (5 cm) pad arrived.

### What are wedge cushions on a window seat for?

They work as armrests and backrests at the ends. You lean on one and stretch your legs toward the other, and two people can sit facing each other without a long back cushion blocking the window.

### Where do I write the thickness when I order a custom cushion?

In the order's personalization note, next to the exact size. Production follows the written order, so a thickness agreed only in messages can be missed, as happened with the 2 in pad in this story.
