# An angled oatmeal bay window seat cushion through a year of light

*It starts with a buyer who offered to cut a paper template. Then the photo: one textured cushion, one diagonal end, and what changes on the sill from season to season.*

> **The quick answer:** An angled bay window cushion in oatmeal texture works year-round because it changes with the light, not with color. Low sun shows off the weave, and a pale neutral shows fading less than a strong color. For an asymmetric bay, send a paper sketch with every side measured, or a full-size template. Handmade tolerance is about 3/8 to 3/4 in (1-2 cm).

## The conversation: 'I can cut you a paper template'

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a bay window seat that was neither rectangular nor symmetrical. Photos came first, then a generous offer.

**Buyer:** I can cut a paper template to the exact outline, if that helps.

**Workshop:** Please start with a paper sketch, every side measured and written on it.

The sketch arrived. The workshop asked for a few extra dimensions, then quoted.

That exchange is the whole method, partner. An asymmetric bay has no shortcut: every side gets a number, and when the outline turns strange, a full-size paper template beats a list of numbers. Angles are just lengths in disguise, and a template records them without a protractor. The [paper template Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/paper-template-for-custom-cushion/) shows how to trace one, and the [bay window calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bay-window-calculator/) checks the arithmetic.

## Three more: tolerance, off-chart colors, clipped corners

**A common question:** My window seat cushion is a centimeter or two off what I ordered. Is that normal?

**The workshop's answer:** A tolerance of about 3/8 to 3/4 in (1-2 cm) is normal for handmade cushions. The shop checks the production size, for example 23.5 x 53.5 x 4 in (60 x 136 x 10 cm), against your numbers, and asks whether the alcove is truly square, because a rectangle in an angled space looks off.

**A common question:** Your photos show colors I can't find on the swatch chart. Is there a bigger range?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. There are more colors than the standard chart shows, and the shop shares further charts through a link, including a second linen chart. A code such as L-54 is not on the standard chart but can be ordered; write it in the personalization or order notes.

**A common question:** Can you make a bench cushion that isn't square, say with 3 inches taken off two corners?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, cut corners are no problem. Order through the trapezoid and custom-shape listing, choose the size by the cushion's widest depth and longest length, and upload your drawing. The 3 in (7.5 cm) corners are then cut to the drawing.

## Pinned by Nate

Five pins, from the textured top in low sun to the one green note in the vase.

1. **Oatmeal textured top**: The crinkled surface catches the low sun and shows its depth.
2. **Angled end**: The end is cut on the diagonal to follow the bay wall.
3. **Unpiped front edge**: No welt, so the textured fabric wraps the edge in one soft line.
4. **Waffle-knit throw**: The waffle weave repeats the cushion texture in a lighter shade.
5. **Eucalyptus vase**: A single green note in an all-oatmeal scene.

## One cushion, four seasons on the same sill

The cushion first. It is oatmeal, a crinkled weave from the [bouclé and teddy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/) family, cut as a trapezoid with a diagonal end that follows the bay wall. Box edge, no piping. On a soft texture a welt would fight the surface, so the fabric wraps the front edge in one line and runs cleanly into the corner. It sits one shade darker than the cream shaker cabinets, a small step that still reads from across the room.

**Winter.** Low afternoon sun crosses the whole top, and every ridge in the weave throws a shadow. The waffle-knit throw stays on the seat, repeating the texture a shade lighter.

**Spring.** The eucalyptus in the speckled vase is the only green in the scene. Swap it for whatever the yard offers; one stem is the easiest way to change a tonal room with the season.

**Summer.** Casements open, the throw moves off, the seat stays clear. Sun is the real test now. Oatmeal shows fading less than a saturated color, and the [notes on sun and fading](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-fading-sun/) cover the rest.

**Fall.** Two books come back to the sill, stacked, with a stoneware mug beside them. Below, the black-and-cream Berber rug grounds all that pale in every season.

Which way does your bay face? That decides which of these seasons your cushion lives in most. More angled seats are collected under [bay window cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bay-window-cushions/).

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Angled bay window seat cushion |
| Shape | Trapezoid with a diagonal end on the bay wall |
| Fabric | Oatmeal crinkled texture, bouclé family |
| Edge | Box edge, no piping |
| Tolerance | About 3/8 to 3/4 in (1-2 cm), handmade |
| Clipped corners | Widest depth and longest length, plus your drawing |
| Asymmetric bays | Paper sketch with every side, or a full-size template |
| Year-round props | Waffle throw, eucalyptus, Berber rug |
| Best for | Sunny reading nooks in angled bays |

> **Tailor's margin:** Handmade window seat cushions carry about 3/8 to 3/4 in (1-2 cm) of tolerance. Check the alcove is truly square before you order a rectangle.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a textured bay window cushion need piping?

Not necessarily. On a soft, crinkled weave, leaving the welt off lets the fabric wrap the front edge in one line and lets an angled end run cleanly into the corner. Piping suits smoother fabrics, where you want the outline drawn.

### Will an oatmeal window seat cushion fade in a sunny bay?

Every fabric changes after years of direct sun, but a pale neutral like oatmeal shows it less than a saturated color. Drawing a sheer during the brightest hours slows it further.

### What should I send for a bay that is not symmetrical?

Photos, plus a paper sketch with every side measured. If the outline is very irregular, trace a full-size paper template of the sill. Expect the workshop to ask for a few extra dimensions before it quotes.
